The Trial of Jean Grey Part 6- (Guardians of the Galaxy # 13)

By Mark Rodriguez

Time to wrap up this story before the Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters... and also to see exactly how Jean Grey gets herself out of this situation. For those missing out, the Shi'Ar empire has kidnapped the younger Classic Teen Jean from the 60's or so and have put her on trial for crimes she committed as the Phoenix... which technically speaking since she's a girl out of time, she hasn't committed these crimes yet. The X-Men team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Starjammers, and now is the part where we get to the fighting! But then Jean arrives and tells them that they're right in their accusations.

The story opens with Jean telling The Gladiator that she now knows about what will eventually be possessed by the Phoenix and commit these crimes, and they won't be able to stop it and she won't be able to control it. She says if they kill her, the Phoenix is a force of nature and it will find another host. Gladiator reminds her that she is the last of the Grey family... and Jean gets angry and won't forgive him for killing her family randomly 'just in case'. Jean turns into a pink glowing being of power and attacks Gladiator while the rest rush into battle.

Jean blasts Gladiator into one of the spaceships. Hepzibah asks if she's ever done something like this and Gamora thinks this is something completely different from the Phoenix. The Oracle wants to help her and Jean warns her to stay out of her head. Inside Oracle's mindscape, she explains that Jean is now able control her telepathic and telekinetic powers at the same time. Jean announces she's not the Phoenix, but something new. Gladiator flies into her and they both clash.

After a big explosion they both fall, but Star Lord catches Jean. Oracle then declares the fight is over. Jean wakes up and is alright, though she sees the image of the glowing pink energy woman behind the gang (as a ghost or symbolism or whatever since no one else can see her).

Oracle tries to convince Gladiator that Jean is different now and they should leave her alone, but says it's not her decision to end the battle. Cyclops says it's his and he will kill them if they go to Earth looking for Jean again. Cyclops threatens that he'll bring down all the Marvel superheroes down upon them if they even think about grabbing Jean again, and Quill reminds him that they protect Earth so they won't let them get near the planet either.

Gladiator warns that history will repeat itself and they'll all die by Jean's hand. Jean says whatever happened to her is new, and the X-Men are now making new history. Gladiator throws out some more threats against the Guardians and leaves. Gamora says it's over and it's time to go,

The heroes fly off and Jean is surprised the Shi'Ar let them go. Quill explains his father is powerful dictator and they wouldn't want to anger him if anything were to happen to him. The heroes relax and the X-Men make sure Jean is alright. Jean does notice Angela looking rather sinister in the background.

Soon enough the X-Men are back on planet Earth where Angela reminds them thay they owe them big time. Kitty thanks Quill for everything, and he gives her a communicator, not just for emergencies but also just to talk. Quill and Kitty seem to be very happy to have met each other and she kisses him on the cheek. Groot starts talking to the normal non-talking Earth trees and Rocket tries to stop him. He then sees normal Earth raccoons and freaks out, telling them to put some pants on.

Cyclops then drops another bombshell on everyone... he decided to go off with his father into space. Everyone is surprised and Kitty doesn't allow it, but Scott tells her 'it's my dad'. Scott tells Jean that they eventually get married and have kids and have a future full of good and bad together, but it never ends happily for them... so maybe this way they will be happy.

Cyclops leaves and tells X-23 to watch over the gang. Angels wonders if they ever find a way back to their own time, should they return without him? The X-Men head back home, feeling sad, and Jeans gets on her knees, showing more signs of her mysterious new powers.

My Opinions-

And so ends this epic crossover between the time-traveling All-New X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy. What started with something already tried and true probably way too many times... (the Phoenix) now ends with something new. I honestly wish Gladiator didn't cut Jean off before she finished saying 'I am....' cause I really wondered what new thing she was going to call herself.

Overall it was a good story and it ended very unexpectedly, with Jean having new powers, Cyclops leaving to fly off into space with his dad, and the Shi'Ar adding themselves to the list of space enemies that hate the Guardians. The story was pretty good and a lot more stuff happened issue after issue when compared to Battle of the Atom. It also did a good job to add the on-going conflict of these characters getting used to their new time period and the future events that were already spelled out for them.

One last thing I want to throw in here is that thanks to this comic I remembered who the Starjammers were, cause hey... I knew Cyclops' dad had a team of space pirates but I haven't seen the 90's X-Men cartoon since.... well, the 90's... so of course I'd forget the name. So at Zenkaikon 2014 at a 'Bad Comic Book Movie' panel which dealt with the X-Men, Ghost Rider and Judge Dredd movies... they randomly asked what was the name of Cyclop's father's team. Thanks to this comic, I got it right and I got a free season set of the Fantastic Four animated series released some time back. Maybe I'll finally review it someday.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
