The Trial of Jean Grey part 4- (Guardians of the Galaxy # 12)

By Mark Rodriguez

To show modern day Cyclops the error of his ways, Beast brought back the original 6 X-Men that started it all from the past into modern day. After all was said and done, these time displaced teenage heroes chose to stay. After the Battle of the Atom storyline, we found out that even if they wanted to, they couldn't return to the past, having stayed so long in the present that they have become time paradoxes. Now the Shi'Ar are after Jean to put her on trial for her crimes as the Dark Phoenix from way back then, even though technically speaking this Jean Grey came from a time era before any of that ever happened. The Shi'Ar could care less and want her dealt with, and now the Guardians of the Galaxy have become involved, and are here to help the X-Men get Jean back. On top of that, Corsair from the Starjammers just contacted the Guardians' ship and Classic Cyclops is about to find out who he is.... Let's see what happens.

This issue starts out with a flashback of a plane flying over Alaska. It's being shot down and the Summers family is on board. There's only one parachute left and the mother gives it to the Summers brothers, Scott and Alex. As the kids jump, they see the plane explode with their parents inside. Scott wakes up from his nightmare.

Scott finds himself waking up as the Starjammers are now on board as well (that's a crowded spaceship) and is face to face with his father. Scott and Corsair hug, and Rocket Raccoon is grossed out. Quill tells him some fathers do hug and care about their kids, though not theirs.

who the hell is Rocket's father?
On planet Spartax, the king is advised that the Shi'Ar has kidnapped Jean Grey to make her pay for her crimes as Phoenix, but is confused since the modern day Jean has been dead for some time. The king sighs and knew this would happen eventually, despite the fact everyone agreed to leave Earth alone. The king's adviser tells the King that his son, Quill, and his Guardians also got involved. The king says now that his son is involved, he can't turn a blind eye to this.

The Shi'Ar train and Gladiator is informed that one of their ships is missing. One of the Shi'Ar women tells him that the X-Men are coming for them, even though he doesn't believe people from Earth would have the technology to go out into space fast and far enough to find them. The Oracle says they have kidnapped one of the X-Men's founding members, which means they declared war on the X-Men and Earth's mutant population in general, and they will come for her. Gladiator says he's ready for them. Oracle says she knows he isn't and doesn't know if he has it in him to do what comes next. He tells her not to read his mind, and she says she promised not to, but everyone can see what he's feeling now. Gladiator flies off, telling everyone that it's time.

Cyclops talks with his dad, and he tells him after him traveling through time, his story of being abducted by space pirates shouldn't be that hard to believe. Corsair says it feels weird since he already went through this with the older Cyclops. Scott asks if they're ok, and he says he's good with both his son and his brother Alex, and Alex even traveled with him for a while. Cyclops asks what happened to his mother. Corsair is silent and says it's the reason he never returned to Earth. Beast tries to cheer him up, telling him at least he was able to find his father. Scott walks out and X23 soon follows him.

Scott sulks in a room and X23 reminds him that they're on this ship for a reason and they have to get back to it. X23 says she 'doesn't often do one of these, but it seems he needs it' and gives him a hug. Cyclops holds onto her and cries in her arms.

Back in space, Oracle awakens Jean and tells her she's in the Hall of the Imperium Tribunals. She will be judged today. Jean doesn't want a trial without a lawyer (yeah, like she's in position to make demands), and the Oracle says she will be her counsel. She recommends him to stay calm, the Shi'Ar won't take kindly to her outbursts. If she is innocent, let her be innocent. Jean screams out violently that she is innocent, and Oracle says she'll need to be more convincing. She realizes she is still trapped in the bubble, in a room full of darkness, and the trial is about to begin.

The room is packed with aliens of all shapes and sizes and Gladiator tells them that Jean Grey will now face her accusers and answer for her acts of genocide.

In the Shi'Ar empire, both the Guardians and Starjammers ships are cloaked. Kitty personally introduces herself to Peter Quill and thanks him for helping them out. He feels upset they didn't arrive ten minutes earlier to prevent Jean from being captured at all. They arrive on the Shi'Ar Throne World and see lots of imperial ships flying around. Quill says they'll have to assume they'd be able to see through their cloaking devices. Quill and Corsair discuss some way to sneak into the Empire without being detected. They could sneak into one of the enemy ships, but all it takes is for one of the guards to alert security and it would all go to hell.

Gladiator shows the people a recording of a star system being destroyed when it suddenly turned super nova and exploded without reason. He then plays the final broadcast from the battle cruiser that filmed this to their former Empress Lilandra (she was killed and died in Gladiator's arms). The broadcast shows their final hour as it finished with a close up of an evil smiling Dark Phoenix ending them. Gladiator tells them this is the end of a star system, with millions and millions dying in an instant. He then asks a horrified Jean how she pleads.

My Opinions-

Interesting issue, though mostly it's one of those issues to help the story get from point A to point B. Not any action and story barely moves forward, but some good character moments here and there. I did like the interactions between Scott and Corsair, complete with the father feeling deja vu since he went through all this before whenever he met up with Scott the first time.

looks like Corsair meeting his son went better the second time than it did the first time
I liked the issue, and I'm eager to see how the rest of the trial is going to play out. I guess this comic might kinda suck for Guardians fans, since they were barely in it. Quill talked with Corsair, he talked a bit with Kitty, and Rocket Racoon said a few lines here and there. And this issue sure as hell didn't have Gamora and Jean kicking ass and taking names as the cover promised.

Overall I understand it was an issue to connect the story and serve as some downtime to get the characters to know each other and react to everything that is going on before all the intense action goes down. I'm eager to see what happens next.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
