Avengers-X-Men AXIS # 3

By Mark Rodriguez

Magneto killed the Red Skull after he was trying to brainwash captured mutants in his reeducation camps. Since the Red Skull was using Xavier's mind and powers, his death transformed him into the giant sized Red Onslaught. He attacks the heroes with 2 Adamantium Sentinels created by Iron Man's designs. As the heroes go down, Iron Man is the last one left.... but Magneto arrives to continue the fight alongside a slew of super villains including Dr. Doom, Loki and Carnage! Now what will happen?

The issue opens with Deadpool dragging Iron Man away from the battlefield, while talking his ear off and making fun of Hobgoblin and Carnage. The bad guys attack the Red Skull while throwing quips about saving the world. Carnage remarks that normally he'd be into the Skull's plans, but not if it means having to bow to him. Carnage, Loki, Doom and Magneto succeed in destroying one of the Sentinels and now focus their thoughts on the Red Skull.

Back to the remaining heroes, Quentin tries to block Red Skull's mental influence but is starting to tire and weaken. Genesis tries to give his support, hoping he can heal fast enough to help.

The classic Steve Rogers Captain America shows up and the Red Skull is surprised by his sudden recovery. It was actually Mystique in disguise, giving enough time for Enchantress to use her powers against the Red Skull. Using forced powers of love upon a being of pure hate, the Red Skull is torn apart by these forced emotions.

Carnage, Jack-O-Lantern and the Absorbing Man, now with the power of Adamantium backing him continue to destroy the second Sentinel. The Red Skull is now under the Enchantress' control and she plans to use him for her own plans. The Red Skull warns her of a Sentinel about to attack her from behind. Creel smashes the giant robot with his steel ball but the distraction is enough for Enchantress to lose control. The Red Skull smacks her away and starts attacking the villains.

Magneto rescues Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch and wants them to resume the spell they used before that would make Xavier regain control of Onslaught. The Master of Magnetism will protect them as they do so, but wonder where the group of super villains came from. Magneto says he had to make a compromise.

Quentin continues to block out the Red Skull's influence, but he is finally taken over. Elsewhere, Deadpool asks Iron Man if he can join the Avengers when all of this over. Tony demands to know where the insane mercenary is dragging him off to. Deadpool says he'll help Stark re-power his suit.

The Red Skull now takes control of all of the villains and sends them after the remaining heroes. Carnage jumps in to attack the Scarlet Witch, but he gets blasted away by Genesis. Dr. Strange is also taken over and stops his attack. Sabertooth leaps in to kill Genesis. Deadpool comes in and stabs Sabertooth, singing that he is an Avenger now. Iron Man blasts the Red Skull with his Telepathic Dampener. Dr. Doom arrives and tells the Scarlet Witch to resume her spell, and he will help her, taking Dr. Strange's place. There is a big flash and everything goes black.

Moments later, the heroes awaken and are confused as to what happened. The Red Onslaught is gone as are all the villains except for Deadpool. The Red Skull is now back to his normal self, and alive. Storm wonders if this mean that the spell to help Xavier regain control worked.... and if this means that Xavier is now in the body of the Red Skull... The X-Men want to wake him up, but Iron Man stops them. The X-Men and Avengers start to disagree again... the X-Men want to take the Skull back with them to see if they can rescue Xavier, and the Avengers want to take the Skull back with them so he can pay for his crimes. Havok argues that he's a Co-Leader of the Avengers under authority of Steve Rogers, and he won't take orders from the Falcon or Iron Man.

Just then Steve Rogers himself arrives, for real this time, but he also agrees that they will take the Red Skull with the Avengers. A suddenly grown-up version of Genesis shows up and tells them that Xavier is gone and whatever they're feeling is just residue. Havok accepts that the Avengers can take Red Skull but announces that he quits the Avengers. Wasp doesn't want him to go. Havok says Cyclops was right about them and the X-Men can never trust the Avengers. Wasp and Havok look sad as they part ways.

Rogue and Scarlet had a bit of a pep talk last issue, so it's kinda fitting they give themselves a sad glance before parting way. Geez, the heroes spend more times fighting each other than they do actual bad guys anymore.
My Opinions

Another fun issue as the battle continues. It was great seeing the Marvel villains take center stage, though it did bring me Dej Vu with Forever Evil where the DC villains saved the world. I liked Hobgoblin joking about being on Oprah if they saved the world. Deadpool was funny as usual and of the villains, Enchantress had a good scene and Dr. Doom continued to boast his massive ego. 'Once again it's up to Doom to save the world'. I also liked Loki telling everyone he's one of the good guys now... with no one really believing him since he is the prince of lies and all that.

Even though the first three issues of this story was an all-out battle against the Skull... now we got a new problem that sounds like it will lead to another Avengers VS X-Men. The Red Skull is back to normal, but it might be Xavier at the helm. Now both teams are at odds again and we have the mystery of what will happen when Schmidt wakes up. Unlike Avengers VS X-Men where the main threat was the Phoenix, an X-Men kinda thing (what happened to Hope anyway, did she go back to her own time or something?) this threat with the Red Skull and Xavier impacts both teams in different but personal ways.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
