Quite a bit happens in this issue.... but it's a very fast read due to all the splash pages, two page spreads and panels without dialogue. In case you're just tuning in, Beast brought the Classic X-Men from the first few issues of way back then to talk some sense into the modern day insane Cyclops. X-Men from the Future arrive to tell they have to return to their own timeline NOW. Classic Jean saw the future as she read the mind of the Future Jean and was horrified, deciding they have to leave. However, the Future X-Men are very suspicious in their actions, and Magik takes Classic Beast and Iceman to that same timeline to see a very different set of Future X-Men.
This issue opens up a few years into the future as Beast, Rogue and Jean support Alison Blaire, Dazzler as being the first mutant president. Alison wins the election and the crowd goes wild as finally mutants can see a happy future living alongside humans. Beast, Kitty and Jean are overjoyed as Dazzler beings her acceptance speech.
Suddenly a huge jet-stream of flame hits Alison, scorching her to death. Everyone panics and Kitty calls Madrox to know what's going on, but all of Multiple Man's copies are dead. Winged monsters that look like they came straight out of hell fly into the scene, attacking everyone and causing a huge panic.
At the Jean Grey School for the Gifted, even more years into the future, the new set of Future X-Men start walking towards Magik, Classic Beast and Iceman. Magik sees Future Colossus and they're both happy to see each other again. Apparently Future Colossus now carries Magik's Soulsword since in some time later she would give it to him. The Future Jubilee tells everyone they have to leave now before they make things even worse. Magik asks her what relation do they have with the Future Beast, Kitty and Xorn they've seen and Jubilee says they haven't had anything to do with them in years. Magik determines Xorn's group aren't the real X-Men, but rather it's the group they're talking to now. Magik demands to know what made them act that way.
We flashback to the sometime after Alison's death, after the crowds cleared out. Colossus and Iceman tell Beast it's time to go so that the authorities can work out the crime scene. Beast is in absolute despair due to how they will always be hated, that even now when things look like it will finally be different, people still hunt them down and destroy them. Colossus says they will find who did this. Beast asks 'and then what?'
Back to the Future...the Iron Man-ish guy tells them they can't know what happened that day and they have to return to their timeline and live out their lives. Classic Iceman argues they have to at least be responsible for the 'evil Future X-Men' in their timeline. He then asks if the 'wizard Iceman' is really him, and if that is him, then what is the deal with the Ice Hulk. Ice Wizard confirms that he is indeed the Future Bobby Drake, all grow up, and Future Jubilee shuts him up before he has a chance to explain the Ice Hulk.
Jubilee, now called Wolverine, attacks Illyana, who defends herself with her sword. Classic Beast insists that they're not going back until the Future X-Men help them. The one named Kymera says they should put this to a vote. Wolverlee objects but Colossus admits they are part to blame for some of this, so they have to help. Plus nothing will stop him from helping his sister.
Back to present day, in the Xavier Secret School, Magneto, Cyclops and Emma return home to recover from the previous battle. The younger generation of mutants are totally confused and say they need a flowchart to understand everything that just happened. Just then a light flashed and everyone is surprised to see.... Magik, Classic Iceman and Beast, alongside the REAL Future X-Men.
My Opinions-
So now we get more of the bigger picture. The Future X-Men were actually twisted or misguided versions of them, and the team that Magik found, including Colossus and Jubilee are the real deal. I thought it was cool that Jubilee decided to take the Wolverine mantle. Several years later when Wolverine was dead for a while, X23 took the mantle, but it would have been cool if Jubilee got to do so.
So Dazzler was going to become the first mutant president before she gets blown up in this dark future. I liked Beast's little speech as he finally emotionally gave up. After all these years fighting the good fight and living with Xavier's dream of humans and mutant co-existing in peace despite all the bigotry they faced, and being so close to achieving that dream when they had a mutant president.... only to have her murdered before she could even set foot into the White House. Though I do wonder what those creatures from hell were and where they really came from. It's like the gates of hell opened just to stop mutants from having their day.
The main complaint with this issue is how short it was. I know it doesn't exactly take an hour or so to read through a comic... but wow, this was two-page spread after two-page spread after two-page spread. Hell, we had a two-page spread regarding to the hellish attack on the mutant presidency, and then upon flipping the page you get another two-page spread of the Future X-Men. Geez. We do demand a little more from our 3.99. But oddly enough, it does seem that a lot did happen this time to push the story forward. Let's see how it all goes down.
One thing though guys... Iceman calling the Iron-person 'Not-Iron Man'.... it's a small nitpick but that kind of slang didn't exist back in the 80's, 90's or whatever era the Classic X-Men now come from....
