X-Men Battle of the Atom part 10 (X-Men Battle of the Atom # 2)

By Mark Rodriguez

The final battle is here! The Future X-Men were revealed to be the Evil Brotherhood and they have plans for the Original 6 X-Men from the past. The modern day X-Men team up and are ready to take them down. SHIELD finally gets involved and wants to shut down all the madness. Just then, XornJean then uses her powers to mess with the hellicarriers' defense systems and forces them to fire missiles down upon everybody.

The story opens at the Cape Citadel Military Base where the X-Men brace themselves for the onslaught of missiles headed their way. Maria Hill is frantic asking who started the attack and her people tell her their systems started firing automatically. XornJean and Future Xavier try to maintain control of the defense systems but Future Phoenix attacks them. Just then one of the missiles lands near Kitty and Colossus, but it doesn't explode. By now Maria has regained control of their attack systems. When asked what kind of missiles they were firing, she was informed that they were anti mutant missiles.

Future Beast tells his counterpart that the cycle of humans wanting to hunt mutants to extinction will never end, unless they stand together and end it now. He tries to rally up everyone for his cause until he is suddenly shot down.. by Sentinels. Classic Beast is shocked to see his future self die and Wolverine is pissed that SHIELD now has its own Sentinels. Psylocke asks Kitty if all they're destined to fight hatred and Sentinels all their life.

Poor Future Beast- just totally insane by every thing he went through as an X-Men since day one. His crime was discovering the dream is dead.
Future Phoenix continues the fight against XornJean and says she's gone crazy, and can't blame her insanity on being possessed by the Phoenix this time. XornJean says the Phoenix's power calls out to her. Sentinel-X tries to gain control of the Sentinels but Wiccan warns they've been protected by spells. Ice Hulk tosses Raze towards them, and Future Jubilee rushes in to fight him. Unfortunately, a Sentinel blasts the female Future Wolverine in half.

Sentinel-X freaks out upon seeing his mother murdered and flies in to attack them head on. Before Colossus can stop him, Future Xavier starts attacking his mind, wanting to cripple him over being crippled by his Soulsword earlier. Magik slashes Xavier across the back. She then starts flipping out and turning into Darkchilde, determined to finish him off.

XornJean says the whole world is in chaos, and it's all the fault of both Wolverine and Cyclops and their constant bickering. Wolverine and Cyclops try to stop her, as well as talk her down, but by now XornJean completely lost her mind. All she wanted was for her young self to go back to her original timeline, so she never had to grow up and become what she is now. She wants desperately to make things the way they were before.

Classic Cyclops says this is their time, and the 6 Originals jump in to attack her. XornJean tells her younger self that they're not ready for the horrible future that awaits them. Classic Jean says she'll never give up on her friends and isn't afraid to die. XornJean agrees on that and overloads herself on her powers. She wishes good luck to her younger self as her mask begins to crack.

Future Xavier wishes there was another way and calls on the Brotherhood to retreat (what's left of them anyways.... I guess Raze, Molly and Ice Hulk?) XornJean explodes and leaves nothing but a piece of her mask behind. Maria Hill shows up and orders everyone to stand down but sees everything is finally over.

On our first epilogue, the X-Men regret the losses they suffered, but thank Magik for snapping out of her rage and warping everyone home. Rachel and Kymera are sure the rest of the Brotherhood is still out there. Wolverine tells the Classics that they still have to go back to their own era since it's too dangerous for them to stay. Classic Beast mentioned they already tried and something prevented them from being able to be sent back. Modern Beast will get to work on figuring out this problem. Modern Iceman mentions Modern Cyclops' team also has to leave.

Emma says they better not blame them for anything and Magneto says he does agree with Wolverine. Modern Cyclops states they have a bigger problem than their bickering. SHIELD tried to kill them and they now have their own Sentinels. Wolverine and Cyclops argue over who has the moral authority to deal with this situation. Wolverine reminds Cyclops about how he killed Xavier (during the Avengers VS X-Men storyline). Cyclops questions about Wolverine considering himself a worthy successor to Xavier, and Wolverine replies that as long as he can help mutants in need, he doesn't care if people call him Professor Wolverine.

In the second epilogue we see that Kymera decided to stay in modern day since she still needs to hunt down and get rid of the remaining members of the Future Brotherhood. Outside, Jubilee has a little talk with her future son Shogo who is still mourning the loss of his mother. Jubilee finds out that her future self eventually does cope with being back out in the sunlight, but she's mostly overjoyed that she got to keep and raise Shogo.

In the third epilogue, the Future X-Men say their good byes as they prepare to go back to their own time. Future Colossus is now braindead, thanks to Xavier, so Illyana tells the others to be sure to bury him in his homeland. Modern Iceman asks them if they have anything to look forward to, considering that Xavier and Nightcrawler are dead and the X-Men are divided and fighting among each other. Future Iceman tells them there will still be moments that will amaze them.

In our fourth and final epilogue, Kitty Pryde decides to quit the Jean Grey branch of the X-Men since noone sided with her and the Originals when they needed help the most. The Originals also don't don't want to stay where they're not wanted. Kitty hugs Illyana and thanks her for everything, and she leaves to join Cyclops' branch of the X-Men with the Originals. Cyclops gives Wolverine a smug grin as they had now taken 6 members from his team (since Classic Angel seemed to already have been on Modern Cyclops' team) to side with them.

My Opinions-

Well, we finally came to the end of this story. There were a couple of casualties in this story, though they were all from the future so they hardly count in the grand scheme of things. If anything, Beast will now be very careful to not become the madman he met from the future. It must also be so weird for Shogo to have his mother die, and then have a chat with a younger version of her. It's also funny how they mentioned the death of Nightcrawler (no idea how or when this happened) and he's already on the cover of one of the X-titles that following week.

I still don't understand their main motivation in all this. XornJean is Classic Jean who chose to stay in the modern era and grew up screwed up due to whatever horrible future awaited them. They wanted to send them back to their own era to make things back the way they used to be. THEN WHY DID THEY SHOW UP TO STOP THEM JUST AS THEY WERE ABOUT TO DO EXACTLY THAT? If they just stayed put, the Originals would have been sent home already. Now due to their sudden appearance that caused Jean and Cyclops to run away and waste extra time finding them and bringing them back, for whatever reason, they're now some kind of living paradox that can't be sent home. Smooth move, Brotherhood.

Overall, the story was alright, and while the first half kinda dragged its feet, most of the fun was seeing the different versions of the X-Men interact and deal with all this madness. Just seeing the Original X-Men dealing with future versions of themselves and now future-future versions of themselves on top of that was fun. Especially Ice Man, who had the most 'every day man' reaction to all this insanity. The crazy fighting and deaths in the final issues surprised me, even though they were Future versions of the main characters. It was a fun read and at the time of 2013, brought me back into the Marvel Universe.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
