The Trial of Jean Grey part 5- (All-New X-Men # 24)

By Mark Rodriguez

The Shi'Ar find out that there is a younger version of Jean Grey still alive, and captured her so she could stand trial for all the deaths she caused when she was possessed by the Dark Phoenix back in the day.... even though this is a younger teenage Jean that hasn't done any of that yet. The Guardians of the Galaxy team up with the X-Men, as well as the Starjammers, as Jean is about to stand trial. What will happen???

The issue begins with Jean being asked how she pleads after showing her footage of Phoenix wiping out a star system. Jean is speechless, and just as Gladiator is about to take her silence as guilt, King J-Son, Star Lord's father, bursts into the room and says she is innocent and doesn't even know about the crimes they speak of. Gladiator says he has no say in this Tribunal. The King of Spartax says he was invited, just like everyone else and that the Phoenix' genocide affected more than just the Shi'Ar. He states the she hasn't committed any crimes yet but they have invaded Earth and kidnapped Jean to bring her here, and some time back they wiped out the rest of the Grey family in case the Phoenix was a genetic trait. He asks if Jean had the Phoenix' power, she wouldn't let them live. However, Jean, having this revelation of the death of her family smack in the face so suddenly has started to anger her.

His name is J-Son? Seriously...?

In space, the Shi'Ar ships guarding the Shi'Ar home world see a floating female body (Angela) in space and decide to take it in to study it. The Guardians and the X-Men watch this and wait for their moment to sneak in. Once inside, the Shi'Ar begin to study her, and this is when Angela snaps to life. Angela soon messages the others and tells them that they're clear to come in, though it will be messy.

Gladiator and J-Son argue over the morality of Jean Grey's trial. Jean is still trapped in the energy bubble and she suddenly starts to act. The Oracle feels something is wrong and Gladiator and J-Son run into the other room to see all the guards down and that Jean is now gone. Oracle yells at them saying that Jean is very powerful and if they continue to push her, they just might awaken the Phoenix herself. She tells everyone to stop thinking about assassinating her so she won't pick up on that. J-Son's men tell him they should escort him to safety and apologize for what happened. J-Son smirks saying he did what he came to do.

The others are now in one of the Shi'Ar's ships as Rocket impersonates one of the Shi'Ar and reports that taking the unidentified female in to be studied in the same area where Jean was being tried. They hear news that she has escaped and the area is under lockdown. Drax is impressed that she was able to take on the empire and live. Cyclops wants them to hurry and bust in to help Jean, but Rocket tells them that going any faster will alert everyone that they are there.

Jean flies around the city while trying to avoid being spotted. Once alone she curls up and breaks down. The heroes land in a hidden part of the city and have to move quickly before the Shi'Ar notice that one of their ships are missing. Angel asks how they're going to find Jean. Angela says she could track her if she had her scent, and X-23 says she can track her since she does have her scent. Corsair thinks Cyclops should stay behind since there isn't room for his emotions on this mission. Cyclops is going anyways. Just as they get ready to leave... the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard, led by Gladiator, has discovered them.

Gladiator tells them to choose their next move wisely... and Rocket Raccoon fires the first shot. An epic battle breaks out and even though Angel says they have the Guards seriously outnumbered... they still have quite a fight on their hands. Manta knocks most of the heroes down with her powers and Gladiator leads the charge against the ones that are still standing... Suddenly Groot comes in and socks Gladiator in the face, soon followed by Angela attacking him and ending with Drax punching him down. Gladiator grabs Drax by the neck and punches him into Angela and Groot. Just as Gladiator wonders how the Guardians and Starjammers got involved in all this, Cyclops blasts him with his optic blasts hard enough to send him flying.

Gladiator tells him that the older Scott Summers would have known to stay out of this. Cyclops demands that he bring Jean Grey to them or he will kill him. Gladiator says he takes it back, and that he does sound like the older Scott. Just then Jean appears, yelling out 'ENOUGH'. She tells Gladiator that he is right, she IS guilty... and she IS a monster.

My Opinions-

Now we're getting to the epic finale of it. It is hard to keep track of all of the characters, especially since I don't know the rest of the Starjammers by name besides Corsair. What was also entertaining was the banter between all the characters. I especially liked when Angela messaged the team after killing off all the Shi'Ar guards, we hear a random voice asking her for marriage, and she says 'Rocket Raccoon is too short', to which Gamora says she was the one asking, which has Angela respond with 'In that case I'll think about it'.

That was rather sneaky of the King of Spartax to basically crash the trial and purposely stir the pot with the news that the Shi'Ar wiped out the Grey family. Not sure if he's just a trouble making bastard or just likes to mess with the Shi'Ar but it's safe to say we see a bit of where Quill gets his mischief from. Now she's mad as hell and isn't going to take it anymore.

Overall a good issue, and for me in particular it was good to finally see Drax and Groot get some action. Even though this is crammed with three super hero teams (if the Starjammers count as superheroes) the comics did the best it possibly could to make sure all of them did something, even if it was just one panel or one line. I mean even they can't keep track of all of who is there. When X-23 mentioned she could track down Jean, Quill called her 'mysterious teenage girl he just now noticed was part of the group'. Classic.

I do feel kinda bad for Angel though. I mean... all he can do is fly.... and a lot of these characters can fly without big wings and can also do other stuff, like Manta's big energy blast attack thing. Someone give this guy a blaster or something. It's a thing I always wondered. Whenever a fight breaks out, we always see Angel soaring overhead so epicly and majestically... but what does he actually DO in battle?

Let's see how all of this goes down.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
