The Amazing Spider-Man # 2 (2018)

By Mark Rodriguez

Spider-Man has the villain Boomerang as a roommate. The Kingpin is trying to win his favor to cause a divide between him and his fans. One of his published essays at his University was considered to be stolen from Otto Octavius' work because it was written at the time the Doc was using Peter's body as his own. Due to this Peter had his degree revoked and has been outed as a fraud, causing him to get fired from the Bugle. The other Marvel heroes hate him. Despite this he helped stop an fake alien invasion caused by Mysterio, but turns out a mysterious new villain is pulling the strings for him. Peter gets back together with MJ and is given the chance to re-take the University course with none other than the Lizard teaching the class. What will happen now?

Back to Basics Part 2 starts with Spider-Man getting beat up by Man Mountain Marko and The Ringer. These two were actually trying to rob a book club. Spider-Man came to stop them and the independent book seller gave him two books for free. Spider-Man gives them to Marko and Ringer, saying he could use them to pass the time in jail. As the web-slinger swings off happily, Marko and Ringer are surprised and can sense that Spidey's in a positive place. He is on top of the world now because he is back with Mary Jane!

Peter wakes up with MJ in his arms and they both discuss their new relationship. Even though Pete's life bring danger, MJ has always been there for him and has always loved him, and vice versa. MJ gets up to leave for work and Peter has class to go to.

Back to present day, Peter freaks out upon seeing The Lizard and notices that nobody is running and nobody is getting eaten. Cindy tells Peter that Connors is a respected member of the faculty. Lizard turns back into Dr. Connors and says he has his Lizard form under control now. Pete says he's heard that before, but Connors explains he now has a surgically embedded adamantium-encased inhibitor chip which will render him unconscious if the Lizard tries to attack anyone, until he regains human form. This device was pioneered in this very class.

Peter is still skeptical but Cindy reminds him that it's the same spirit of second chances that allowed Connors to teach again that is also giving Peter a second chance himself. Connors wants Peter to take his class, but he's not sure he wants to go back to school. Connors excuses himself to be alone with Peter.

Two janitors check out the college girls wishing their college wasn't an all-guy school. These janitors transform from regular humans to Taskmaster and Black Ant. They're out to steal something in Connors' classroom.

Connors convinces Pete that with him losing his job due to the scandal, this class is a good way for him to still put his brilliant mind to use. Unlike when he ran Parker Industries this will be science for the joy of discovery, and Connors wants to show something to Pete. The Isotope Genome Accelerator, the same device that accidentally created the radioactive spider that bit Peter long ago. Connors plans to reverse engineer it and hopefully remove the Lizard from him, which is why he was in Lizard form earlier, he was running tests.

Taskmaster and Black Ant come in and Peter realizes they must be after the Accelerator. There is no place for him to run or hide to change into Spider-Man. Connors turns into the Lizard and tells the class to stay behind him, but the inhibitor chip prevents him from moving. Peter asks Taskmaster if his skull face is real or just a mask, which offends him. Peter says he knew it was a mask at some point but something happened and asks if Wolverine cut his face off. Taskmaster angrily throws him across the room, away from everyone. Peter uses his webbing to mix some chemicals to make them produce a smokescreen.

The smokescreen gives Spider-Man the perfect chance to make his entrance, much to the annoyance of Taskmaster and Black Ant. Spidey kicks Taskmaster back and webs up Black Ant while making his usual wisecracks. Taskmaster manages to grab Spider-Man. Black Ant shrinks and gets back to normal size to escape the webbing and fires off darts, but Spidey flips Taskmaster around so he gets hit by then. Spidey slings a web on Black Ant's face and yanks him forward at the time he pushes Taskmaster forward so they both smash their faces into each other, knocking each other out.

Spidey tells the kids to be sure to pay their student loans. The Lizard asks how he got in here and Spidey jokes saying it's with the teleport skills of a spider. Spider-Man goes to help a student back up to his feet.... and that student happens to be Peter Parker. Spider-Man is talking to Peter Parker as two separate people!

Poor Pete is probably thinking 'another clone? really?'

My Opinions-

I'm rather enjoying this series, and seeing all the weirdness that happens to Peter Parker, even without being Spider-Man. I do have to say, I've never heard of Man Moutain Marko, The Ringer and Black Ant. I also thought Taskmaster was a big level baddie, but Spidey is referring to him and Black Ant as small time, being laid off by HYDRA.

The ending surprised me because I thought Peter causing the smoke screen was a way to sneak in as Spider-Man... but then the scene goes back to him, showing he never left the table. At first I thought Peter was the mystery fake, but re-reading this I noticed this Spider-Man is the fake. Is Mysterio up to his old tricks? I guess we'll find out next issue. Maybe?

I do see the comic continues to throw tidbits here and there of Pete's life including a collage of MJ throughout his life, including the infamous first time they met. We even got to see the flashback of Peter getting bit by the spider. I'm honestly surprised we didn't get flashbacks of previous Spider-Man/Lizard battles, though Pete did mention the time he tried to turn all into humanity into lizards. I wonder how long this will last for Connors, cause when he's overtaken by the Lizard, he seems to be a decent guy. And I checked the pages, it seems he finally got his missing arm back, in human form. The inhibitor chip seemed to have worked, unfortunately even in times where the Lizard's prowess would help... I guess we'll see, but making the casing out of adamantium does make it difficult, storywise to make it malfunction.

I can't wait for next issue, though I assume Peter must be sick and tired of clones and fake Spider-Men by now. That might be a good segway to throw in some clone saga flashbacks next issue?

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for
