Power Girl (2009 run) # 3

By Mark Rodriguez Ultra Humanite has suspended the island of Manhattan above the sky and has also captured Power Girl. He wants to place his brain in the body of Power Girl or he threatens to drop the island, threatening countless lives. With Power Girl strapped down and the surgery about to begin, what will she do???   "Gorilla Warfare" opens with Power Girl strapped down to Ultra-Humanite's machinery. As Power Girl ponders how Humanite assumes she's just all body and no brains, the tubes attached her start to freeze up. Humanite asks how she is doing that and Power Girl breaks free of her restraints, sending a piece of machinery into his shoulder. Humanite asks how she did that and Power Girl says she used her freezing breath. She admits it's one of the most glamorous super power in her move set but the point is Humanite isn't as smart as he thinks he is. She socks the albino gorilla into the machinery. Humanite throws a piece of machinery at her, saying s...

Power Girl (2009 run) # 2

By Mark Rodriguez Power Girl has moved to New York to start a new life and re-open her business as Karen Starr. Things went smoothly until an army of robots using mind waves that drive the citizen crazy started falling from the sky. This turned out to be the work of Ultra Humanite that used his machines to suspend the island of Manhattan into the sky. In exchange for the city, he wants his brain to be inserted into Power Girl's body!! "Unleash the Beast" opens aboard Ultra Humanite's ship, as the villain monologues about having spent billions upon billions in the name of science, but has not yet found the perfect vessel for his genius. The ape grabs Power Girl by the throat and says once he can mentally configure the way a Kryptonian nervous system works, he can make the change. Power Girl feels the pain of him prodding through her mind which she compares it to icy razorblades.  Power Girl asks him when he developed telepathy. Ultra Humanite says he doesn't read m...

Power Girl (2009 run) # 1

By Mark Rodriguez I've always been a fan of Power Girl during her 2009 run. It took me a while, but I first started collecting it near the end of its run before the New 52 started. after finding back issues at Bent Wookee, Comic World, and Stories, and then filling in the gaps with Hipcomic, I finally have the full set of Power Girl's 2009 run. This was all before the New 52 came in and reset her story with the World Finest Huntress and Power Girl series. Let's check out how this series got started. The story opens recapping the classic story of Krypton about to explode, and two parents send their child off into space. A refuge that will become the savior of a new alien world. That isn't exactly how the story played out as we see an adult Kara awaken in her space pod. "A New Beginning" opens in New York City as Power Girl soars through the skies, wanting a fresh new start. She was born on a Krypton from an alternate Earth and was a former member of the Justic...

World's Finest: Huntress and Power Girl # 4 (The New 52)

By Mark Rodriguez The Supergirl and Robin from Earth 2 were blasted to the current Earth. After adapting for years, they renamed themselves as Power Girl and the Huntress. Last time Kara knocked Hakkou, who at this point has become a giant monster, into the rivers of Tokyo to keep him away from civilians. Now they wonder what to do next as they fly over there. Rebirth Conclusion starts with PG carrying Huntress as they fly towards the river, wondering why Hakkou’s radiation can hurt Karen and if he came from Apokolips. However, Hakkou is now messing with oil tankers that can seriously mess up Japanese waters. Karen drops Helena on a nearby ship so she can make the sailors go back and rescue all the survivors. Karen dives underwater and tries to lift up the oil tanker and take it away from the sea. However the ship breaks in half splattering Kara in oil, as well as making an even larger oil spill in the ocean. Kara decides to use her heat vision to burn all the oil away. We t...

World's Finest: Huntress and Power Girl # 3 (The New 52)

By Mark Rodriguez Where last we left our dynamic heroines, the Irradiated Man, Hakkou took Power Girl down and now it’s up to the quite vulnerable and very human Huntress to defend her unconscious friend. Let’s see what happens. 'Rebirth part 3' starts with Huntress firing arrows at Hakkou, trying to radioactive monster from getting closer. The monster burns down all of them and then starts throwing huge steel rods at her. Helena manages to dodge them but is caught against a corner. Power Girl grabs onto her leg with the last of her strength, despite the fact that his radiation hurts her. Huntress shoots at the pipes above Hakkou and wash him in coolant. The coolant was also full of radioactive waste, and Hakkou says he has fed enough and jumps out of the facility. Huntress helps Power Girl to her feet, and the blonde tells Helena that she shouldn’t be so close to radiation. Helena said her body is immune to most toxins. As the leave, they mention how Hakkou talked about the w...

World's Finest: Huntress and Power Girl # 2 (The New 52)

By Mark Rodriguez Formerly known as the Supergirl and Robin of Earth 2, both women founds themselves blasted into the main DC Earth. After years of adapting to their new world, they renamed themselves to Power Girl and The Huntress. Karen (Power Girl) bought a power plant in Tokyo, hoping to use its Quantum Tunneler to somehow send them back home…. When this villain named Hakkou the Irradiated Man blew it up. Now the women want payback. ‘Rebirth II’ starts with Hakkou attacking the women. He tosses a huge chunk of steel that Power Girl swats away like nothing. Since the Quantum Tunneler is damaged, Power Girl has no problem wrecking her lab further as long as it takes this guy down. However, once she finally lays a punch on the guy, the radiation is severely painful to the Kryptonian. Hakkou grabs Power Girl’s wrists and burns her alive. Huntress shoots an arrow into the man’s ear. Screaming in pain, he runs through a wall and gets away. Huntress makes sure her friend is alri...

World's Finest: Huntress and Power Girl # 1 (The New 52)

By Mark Rodriguez The New 52 served as a big reboot for most of the DC Universe, though in Batman's case it was more like condensing. In the new continuity, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown were never Batgirl, and some characters like Power Girl and the Huntress flat out don't exist anymore. Of the 52 new titles, one was Mr. Terrific which featured a familiar looking blonde named Karen Star which fans speculated might have been the New 52 Power Girl. While Mr. Terrific's title was cancelled, Power Girl returned in the second wave of the New 52 and brought Huntress along for the ride. Let's check out the rebooted versions of these two. World’s Finest # 1 starts off the series with ‘Rebirth’ as Helena (Huntress) and Karen (Power Girl) have dinner at a fancy restaurant in Tokyo. As Helena burns down passports of her past identities, Karen holds a toast to their new lives. The women discuss how Karen bought a lab in Japan… when suddenly she gets an emergency call.    The...
