The Amazing Spider-Man # 1 (2018)

By Mark Rodriguez

Spider-Man has an all-new series as Peter Parker's adventures continue. Sometimes after stopping a crime by The Boomerang, he now finds out he has The Boomerang, in his civilian form as his new roommate!

The issue starts with a pleasant memory of Peter Parker holding onto Mary Jane, in his black suit Spider-Man outfit on top of a skyscraper. He is awakenedd from this dream by his noisy roommate Fred Myers playing Call of Duty: Latveria at 5AM at full blast. Pete is currently rooming with both him and Randy Robertson, and he explains that Myers is actually Boomerang. Spidey recently stopped a museum robbery and whatever Boomerang took, was something Kingpin was interested in. Spidey had to let Boomerang go, but now that he's a roommate under his civilian name, he can try to find out what he was up to.

Randy asks Pete why he's mad if he had to be up early anyways for a press conference at the E.S.U. that Tuesday morning. Peter forgot it was Tuesday since he had a lot on his mind lately. There was a big battle involving the Avengers, the X-Men and even The Thing as they fight an army of insects coming from random portals. Peter Quill, Rocket and Groot are in space and can't determine what these bugs are. This is when Spider-Man arrives to help, and Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist aren't exactly thrilled to see him there.

A few weeks ago, Spider-Man tries to stop another robbery. This turned out to be staged so that Kingpin, the current mayor, can honor him by handing him the key to the city as lights and cameras surround them. Spider-Man refuses and swings off. One of Kingpin's men asks why he's trying so hard to praise Spider-Man. Fisk says if he can create a wedge between Spider-Man and his fans, he can truly hurt him.

Back to the big superhero battle, Spidey tries to talk to Daredevil who ignores him. The Human Torch tells him that Daredevil doesn't like him and neither does he. One of the alien bugs latches itself onto Johnny's face.

Peter remembers his conference at the E.S.U which now has a new project on how to keep plagiarism out of the school. The speaker, Cindy Lawton, cites examples of kids cheating by using alternate dimension versions of themselves, having Skrull refugees help them cheat, or even sell their souls to Mephisto to pass their exams. Cindy has a new program called WATCHR that will monitor this. She offers to read one of Peter Parker's  papers and determine it's source. That paper happens to be one written by Parker when his body was swapped with Doc Ock, back when he was the Superior Spider-Man. The WATCHR program determines the true author to be Otto Octavius and now his graduate degree is under investigation and he has lost the respect of his peers. Peter is stuck without a way to explain this away without revealing he is Spider-Man.

This news costs Parker his job as Robbie fires him from the Bugle. He later tells MJ about it and she can't help but laugh at how silly it all sounds from Spider-Man's bizzare life ruining his. They see news on TV of other people coming out and claiming Parker stole ideas from them. MJ asks how he explained this to Aunt May.

By the time Peter got to Aunt May's home, she has already heard the news through a news app. She expresses how disappointed she was in how he cheated to get to where he is. Peter has no way to tell the truth and she says she hoped Uncle Ben and her raised him better than that.

As Spider-Man continues to fight the space bugs, he laments that while it's true that Otto did write that paper, he was never upfront about the degree he earned for him. He just went with it and used it to further his career. He read the essay himself and is angry because he knew that stuff and can figure the patterns of Ock's arms better than he could himself. That's when he gets the idea that there's a pattern to the portal opening that are unleashing the bugs. If he can find which one is in the center he can shut them all down. Black Cat watches as Spider-Man swings himself into one of the portals.

As Spider-Man leaps towards his destiny he thinks to himself if he goes out saving the world, he can accept that this is how his story ends. He then crashes against a glass orb. He sees Mysterio inside who was behind the whole thing. Spider-Man busts through the glass, gets inside and take him down. As he webs up Mysterio, he says he just wanted to try something different and felt he was going in a rut. Instead of doing the same thing over and over, he'd try killing all the heroes at once, and turn his life around. Spider-Man oddly agrees and swings off as Iron Man and Thor go to capture Mysterio. Thanks to the villain's words, Spider-Man now knows what to do.

Peter has a heart to heart with MJ and discusses how he feels. MJ says they're in this together, they've always had.

End of Back to Basics- Part One

The next story starts with Mysterio remembering his youth and how he was inspired by movies as a child to get into writing movies, stunts and special effects. He was turned down but he was determined to show the world by bring his stage to life, similar to the fake alien bug invasion that Spider-Man took down.

This turns out to be part of Mysterio defending himself at his trial. Just then Janice Lincoln comes in as his lawyer to speak for him and say he pleads insanity. Quentin recognizes her as the Beetle (female version) and accuses her of ripping off his idea of the Sinister Six some time ago.

Janice suddenly feels sick and falls to her knees throwing up bugs. The judge calls for an emergency recess and suddenly has rats explode out of him. The building starts collapsing and people have bugs and rats explode out them. Mysterio is terrified and tries to run.

Quentin hears a voice telling him he's smarter than trying to run. Just then a shrouded figure enters the room, saying he won't wait forever. Mysterio pleads he's been wearing Spider-Man down with things like the fake invasion. The man says he knows Peter better than he knows himself and he needs help with setting like the stage like only he can. He sent Janice to help but Quintin chose to turn her down and yell at her. The man drags Janice's body with him as he looks like he's about to finish off the special effects super villain and he pleads for one last chance. The man leaves and says he better not fail, for he has walked Quentin out of hell once before and he won't have a problem with dragging him back down.

Um.... The Rat King? What's he doing here??
Mysterio screams as he is buried in rats and insects, but finds himself back in the courtroom with everything back to normal. He decides to cooperate with Janice and plead insanity. Janice says that's the best acting he's ever down and he thinks to himself that maybe he really is losing his mind.

Meanwhile at the Empire State University, Peter returns to see Cindy. She tells him the review board has decided to fully revoke all of his academic credentials. He is given papers and he thinks it is something he has to sign, but he is also handed more books. Peter is confused and Cindy explains an esteemed member of the faculty was downright insistent he is given another chance, and he'd a difficult man to say no to. Peter walks into the class and is surprised to see The Lizard giving the class. He tells Parker to take a seat.

My Opinions-

Wow, a double-sized issues with a lot of stuff to take in. I was expecting Boomerang being a roommate and whatever he stole for Kingpin to what this issue was going to be about... but instead it's kinda put on the back burner while we focus on a new plot dealing with Peter's reputation being ruined, and him getting back with MJ as a couple. I did like the Call of Duty: Latveria edition. Is Doctor Doom himself DLC? It would probably be expensive and come with a 'curse Reed Richards' expansion pack.

The one thing that confuses me is why all the other heroes hate him. I mean, if it's over the deal with Parker stealing Doctor Octopus' work.... I'm pretty sure he explained to them several times about the Superior Spider-Man scenario after he regained his body. It also can't be due to the Kingpin situation because he turned down the key of the city, he didn't buddy up with him. I wonder if it's something else that will be further explained like the Boomerang situation.

The issue runs down quite a bit of Peter's life for newcomers, explaining the Superior Spider-Man situation, flashbacks to when Parker used to work at the Daily Bugle taking photos of Spider-Man, him running Parker Industries and it's collapse, they even added a flashback to him letting the robber get away that would eventually be the same guy to kill Uncle Ben.

Seeing Mysterio acting like a classic supervillain was cheesy and funny. It's nice seeing some of the bad guys still ham it up even when nowadays everyone wants things to be as realistically as they possibly can be with all the superheroes running around. I did not know the female Beetle was Tombstone's daughter. Also have no idea who this Rat King-ish character is, but he seems to be a brand new villain.

This was a solid read and a great way to get me (and other new readers) back into Spider-Man. I'll be covering the next issue soon. The last thing I want to say is holy crap, they let Connors teach in a school in his Lizard form??!! And also... what kind of world has the Marvel universe become where a kid selling his soul to Mephisto is common knowledge?

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for
