Batman & Robin (The New 52!) # 9 (Night of Owls)

By Mark Rodriguez

The Court of Owls has unleashed the Talons upon Gotham City! As they storm Wayne Manor, Batman does his best to hold them off while Alfred send the alert to all their allies. Now Robin will be facing one of the Talons.

"Night of the Owls- Robin hears a Hoo" begins with Robin getting the same distress signal from Alfred as does everybody else, and he wants to go home and help his father. However, Alfred sends him to protect another target of the Owls… Major General Benjamin Burrows. Robin uses some sort of bat-jetpack to fly to the scene.

The General is busy commanding his troops when something starts to attack his soldiers. Robin lands and tells the General that the soldiers were killed by the Talon, sent by the Court of Owls, to kill him. The General doesn't take the pint-sized hero seriously at first.

The Talon strikes and the men’s gunshots can’t stop him. Robin tells the General to hold onto him so they can both fly out of there. As the General leaves, he feels sad for the remaining soldiers that stayed behind to basically die at the hands of the Talon and buy them more time to escape. The Talon suddenly leaps up and grabs onto Robin’s jetpack. Robin attacks the Talon and they fall to the ground in different directions. The General’s leg is badly fractured due to the fall, and Robin helps him get to his command post.

The Talon continues to hunt and…. kills two random campers for no good reason. Wrong place, wrong time. Robin takes the General to his men, who has passed out by now. Robin tells them what happened and takes command of the soldiers as the Talon makes his attack. The Talon takes the soldiers down with arrows, as they try to shoot him down. Running out of ammo, the soldiers and Robin arm their bayonets and charge him head on.

The Talon still takes out the soldiers and swats Robin away and finally makes his way to General Burrows, calling him Wilkins. The Talon explains that his mission was to kill all members of the Wilkins family, dating back to the days of George Washington…The General is not only the direct descendant of the Wilkins family, but also the last of the bloodline.

Robin then shoots a grappling hook right through the Talon’s eye. Just like a real owl, the assassin turns his head all the way around and tries to attack Robin. However, Damian uses the grappling line to hang him from a tree. Robin walks away comparing himself to the Talon, both born killed used by the people that raised them. The Talon threatens that he will complete his task and kill the General. Robin says he believes him and slashes his head off with his own sword. The General asks if he's sure that the Talon is dead, and Robin says that guy died a long time ago.

My Opinions

This was a good little solo Robin tale. I especially liked how he managed to gain command of the other soldiers and lead them into battle against the Talon. It was weird to see the Talon kill those random campers, just because, but I guess it fits their motif of leaving no witnesses behind.

The Talon's last name must have been Vorhees.
Damian got to feed his bloodlust once again, having killed Nobody in the previous storyline. I guess he sorta gets a free pass since the Talon is a reborn zombie of sorts, but he sure gets a lot of chances to act out on his murderous impulses. And that was after shooting a grappling hook into the guy's eye, and then hanging him through the hole in his head up a tree. Damian is dark.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
