Rise of the TMNT Episode 1- Mystic Mayhem *extreme spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez

The new series will hit in September, but if you have a cable provider you can see the first five episodes on the Nickelodeon website. I couldn't resist watching at least the first one, so brace yourself for intense spoilers. Again, if you want to wait until September, do NOT keep reading or you will be heavily spoiled.

The episode starts with the Turtles and April looking like they're planning to attack some roof party that might have criminal activity. However, they're actually zip-lining to jump into a pool on the roof next door. After the Turtles have fun and decide to leave but Raph notices a little animal that seems scared and alone. This animal was being chased by two guys.

The Turtles and April find the animal, and it warms up to April. The gang can't figure exactly what kind of creature it is, but the men arrive to take it. The men transform into mutant monsters riding mutated versions of their dogs. The Turtles and April try to fight them but they are too powerful, and during the fight, Leo, Mikey and Raph have their weapons broken. The bad guys manage to grab the creature and draw an M-like drawing on the wall that warps them to another dimension, and April accidentally falls in. Once the portal is closed, the brick wall is just an ordinary brick wall and the Turtles can't find April. They do recognize that symbol though.

The Turtles go back home and see that Splinter owns a relic with that same symbol. They try to somehow sneak it past him but all he cares about is watching TV. He falls asleep after eating and Leo manages to get the relic. The Turtles return to the brick wall and Mikey is able to draw the symbol on the wall and they jump into the portal. They find April and she tells them they're in a mystical world hidden under the city.

The Turtles and April go into an evil hideout where they discover Baron Draxum using mosquitoes to drink up ooze and test them on a captured guy to turn him into a mutant. April leads the Turtles to place with weapons where they find magical weapons, though Don prefers to keep his titanium staff.

The new bad guy, Baron Draxum, voiced by John Cena
The Turtles fight with Baron Draxum with their new weapons, or at least they try to since they don't know exactly what they do. Mikey's kusari-fundo starts to scream if spun enough times and is full of fire energy. Raph's tonfas give off shockwaves. Leo's new sword teleports him, and he ends up stuck in a Halo-type eternal loop. Draxum seems able to conjure up monsters of all sizes and defeats them. He is amazed by the mutated turtles and notices they have no real training, but with his training they can be amazing. As he monologues, the damage from the fight caused his giant structure that is containing the ooze topples over and the place starts coming down. The Turtles and April escape with their new pet as the place explodes.

As they return to the city, the ooze-carrying mosquitoes escape as well and swarm out into the city. During all this mess, April decides to keep her new pet and call it Mayhem.

My opinions

Man, what a fast paced thrill ride. This story was only 11 or so minutes long, as this cartoon will be split into 2 segments, so it hit the ground running and never looked back. You have to remember that these are new versions of the Turtles, so you have to learn to adapt to this incarnation.

I love the crazy energy, which is sure to keep kids entertained. I found the whole thing awesome, especially the fight scene with the mystic weapons at play, and I imagine new kids discovering this show will find it as awesome as we all did the first time we saw the Turtles in the 80's. The weapons are cool enough, and it'll take time for them to learn what they can do and how they work. Don's staff is made of titanium and can break out rocket boosters to made it spin through the air, and can even become a selfie stick. His shell also becomes some sort of rocket jet pack to fly. Unlike the others, he's ditched the simple wooden staff a long time ago.

As you can tell the episode skipped over explaining how the Turtles were mutated, though they did find similarities with the mutants Draxum was creating. They also skipped how April met them as she's part of the gang from the start, and unlike 2012 April that had to learn martial arts as the series progressed, here she's flipping around with the rest of the team.

The comedy was pretty cool with the turtles throwing out one-liners here and here and good back and forth wordplay between the guys. It also seems cowabunga is something all of the gang uses as some sort of battle cry and is no longer exclusive to Mikey. I'm also glad that Mikey looks like he isn't going to be 'the dumb one' this time around.

Draxum is pretty interesting with his powers to create monsters and killer plants and such. I honestly can't even tell he's John Cena voicing the character. He almost sounds like the 2012 Shredder.

My only complaint is Splinter being a lazy bum, there's even a joke about the turtles not training (even though somehow they're incredibly acrobatic). He even calls Donatello 'purple', does he even remember their names? lol.

I'll be tuning to see the other episodes once it hits regular TV. I know everyone was worried about this being just random silly nonsense like Teen Titans Go, but this seems to have some story to it. Time will tell. I'll be watching.

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
