Avengers VS X-Men # 9 (Round Nine)

By Mark Rodriguez

The Phoenix heads to Earth and the Avengers want to destroy it while the X-Men want to use it. Iron Man used a giant mech to blast it out of the sky, but it instead split into five and gave Cyclops, Emma, Colossus, Magik and Namor its powers. The Avengers managed to defeat Phoenix Namor, but even though he lost his godly powers, they went back to the remaining four, making them even more powerful!

The Story starts '17 hours from now' as our faceless protagonist finds himself covered in his own blood, but needs to rescue someone. Phoenix Colossus stares him down and tells him to stay down. The hero refuses and Colossus punches him out.

The story goes back to the present as Spider-Man watches over Hope's training in the Mystical City of K'un Lun. Spider-Man tells us it's been 8 days since they've been forced to hide here and Wakanda has fallen. The heroes come and go in attempts to stop the remaining Phoenix X-Men but always return either defeated, or missing some people. In the most recent return, Captain America tells Spider-Man that they lost Thor. We see Thor taken down by the brother-sister duo of Colossus and Magik.

Hope is tried of training and waiting for action, and Spider-Man tells her to resume her training and that 'her time will come'. Tony Stark's been trying to see how the Phoenix, Wanda's hex magic, Iron Fist and Host all fits together. Black Panther hasn't been seen since Wakanda went down. Most of the Avengers are laid up and injured, or captured. Captain America says at this rate they won't last another week and they need to get their people back.

Colossus and Magik have Thor tied up in magic chains or fire and drop him into a volcano. The regular X-Men like Gambit and Storm see that the Phoenix has corrupted Cyclops and the rest.

Meanwhile on Ethopia, Emma meditated alone. Cyclops meets her there and says he needs her back with him since everything went out of control after Namor went out on his own. Emma says she is trying to contain herself, as she can feel so many minds and is horribly tempted to just turn off all of the Avengers' minds like a switch. Cyclops says the Avengers wants to make them look like the bad guys and they have to come around. Emma says she knows Hope is in some place called K'un Lun, and Cyclops flies off. Emma wanted him to stay with her as she's afraid of what she might do next.

Sometime later, Emma goes after a random family and makes a man snap his own neck. Emma says he was flying over the gulf in 1987 and accidentally killed a mutant kid with wings and never told anyone about it. She walks off as the family is horrified and says that nobody has secrets from her anymore.

Storm arrived in Wakanda and Black Panther says she is no longer welcome since the day the X-Men nearly destroyed the country. T'Chala tells Ororo that as the High Priest of the Panther Clan, he had annulled their marriage. Storm is saddened but she tells him that she came to help the Avengers.

Black Panther leads several of the Avengers including Captain America, Spider-Man, She-Hulk and Wolverine to where the Phoenix Four are keeping the captured heroes. There they meet Professor Xavier that tells them that Magik has brought a portion of Limbo on Earth, which makes it a literal hell on Earth. Doctor Strange cloaks them with invisibility but several demons can still pick up their scent.

Magik and Colossus feel that the Avengers have arrived to rescue their friends. Colossus has been busy giving whales legs to crawl on land, though they can't breathe that well.

The Avengers find their teammates trapped in slimy cocoons with demons feeding of their minds. There is too much demonic interference so they would have to carry them out. Just then Magik and Colossus arrive. Spider-Man remarks that just like before, even though they are outnumbered, it's a losing battle against the Phoenix Powered Siblings.

Spider-Man decides to step up and use his webs to pull Wolverine and She-Hulk back. He kicks down a wall to cause a distraction and tells everyone to head out. He will hold of Magik and Colossus. Storm uses a massive lightning bolt to clear the path as the heroes carry Thor, Hawkeye and The Thing.

Magik and Colossus say they haven't gotten far and they can still get to them. Colossus punches down the barricade Spider-Man created when he kicked down the wall, but the web slinger returns to hold them at bay. Colossus punches Spider-Man in the face violently. Spider-Man tries to fight back but gets socked violently by Colossus to the point where his mask is full of blood and his spine is wrecked. Magik complains that Colossus is just holding back and she should end this before she ends them both. Peter and Illyana argue and Spider-Man reminds them what will happen to their power if one of them happens to fall. There is a giant flash of Phoenix flames.

The heroes return to K'un Lun with their rescued teammates. Hope asks what happened to Spider-Man. Captain America, Black Panther, Storm and Wolverine go back for him. Colossus and Magik are both down, and back to their normal selves. Spider-Man is in terrible shape and tells them they both took each other out. However this means their Phoenix Powers would power up the remaining Phoenix X-Men.

Just then at K'un Lun, everything flashes with a bright fiery light. Iron Fist apologizes to Hope for not having finished their training. Phoenix Cyclops has arrived, literally glowing with power since he has now gotten even stronger,  and tells Hope it's time for her to come home.

My Opinions

This was a cool part of the story as Spider-Man remarks about the heroes going on several missions and either coming back severely injured, or not coming back at all..... but then Spidey decided 'NOT THIS TIME'  and put his life on the line to make sure everyone else got out safely. He took a lot of punishment, which he tried hard to laugh off, but he kept getting up. He describes the pain he was enduring, going from violent migraine to not feeling his head at all while he continued to get rocked and rattled by Colossus' Phoenix Powered steel fists. Even the dialogue boxes had splashes of blood to really drive it home. His sacrifice was worth it since the team now regained Thor, The Thing, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, and Miss Marvel.

I also want to add, damn Illyana, being stuck in Limbo warped you hardcore. From what I recall back in the day she seemed like just a regular girl. It was until she was trapped in Limbo that she showcased mutant powers and eventually became dark and crazy. Now with the Phoenix powers, she has no problems wanting to kill everyone, even her own brother, that despite his own madness, still cares a lot about her. I mean, classic Illyana made a cameo or two in the 90's cartoon and I can't believe they are the same person.

On the other side, Emma is also dark, going around killing people and being ever so tempted to just flip everyone's brain off and be done with it. And the scary thing is, Emma, and by extension, Xavier and Jean can do just that if they ever chose to do so. We saw some examples of this in 'Logan' with Xavier's seizures affecting everyone around him.

I don't know, the X-Men just seem very bitter and cold to any non-mutant. They've dealt with so much over the years, almost faced extinction, they're as cold to non-mutants as non-mutants would be to mutants. And of course, Cyclops has gone completely insane, and now he has the godly powers to back it up, multiplied by 3 more times.

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
