Avengers- Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2018) # 3

By Mark Rodriguez

The Dark Celestial has arrived and Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Captain Marvel are trying to stop it without results. Black Panther and Doctor Strange are underground as they see an infestation of giant alien insects. She-Hulk and Ghost Rider run into each other and fight, and get surrounded by the insects. Loki finally announces to everyone that he is the one responsible for bringing the Final Host to Earth.

The issue opens with She-Hulk and Ghost Rider having finished defeating the insects. Rider asks Shulkie if they're friends now, and she is driven crazy by the voice inside her head coming from the Celestial she encountered earlier. She raises her arms looking as if she wants to smash Rider into paste, but instead smashes a hole in the ground and dives in, telling Rider to go to Hell. Rider notices that she seems to know what's going on and wonders if Go to Hell was telling him off, or literally inviting him to join her underground. Rider figures he's going to end up getting punched a lot, but nonetheless follows her down in his hellcar.

In New York, Loki and the Final Host has Thor, Carol and Iron Man floating around a green energy field. Loki tells them this is the Final Host's doing caused by Odin long ago. He uses his magic take the warp grenades away from Carol. He tells them that the Dark Celestials will destroy the world. Captain America, who is held in a red energy field in the hand of one of the Celestials, throws his shield through the field and towards the warp grenades that Loki was holding. In a flash Loki, the Final Host and Captain America are all gone. Captain Marvel reminds Thor and Iron Man that the warp grenades were set to send them to the sun.

Black Panther and Doctor Strange try to hold off the giant insects the best they can, but they seem to be getting stronger. Panther tells Strange to leave and he'll do his best to hold them off. Just then She-Hulk and Ghost Rider enter the fray.

Captain America is still alive inside the sun, thanks to Loki's protective barrier. Loki gloats about not being able to be defeated so easily and Cap tosses his shield at him. Loki swats it back and jokes that it isn't smart to render the person keeping him alive unconscious. He tells Cap that he will be coming with them so they can witness global extinction.

Captain Marvel tells the others that Alpha Flight detected that Captain America is still alive, but so are Loki and the Final Host and they teleported away to an unknown location. Tony says this is Carol's fault since Alpha Flight is supposed to stop cosmic disasters. Carol says they will and tells them to stay out of their way. Tony asks if she's going to put him in a coma again. Thor tells them to stop arguing and since this now how Avengers behave. Carol and Tony yell back that they're not Avengers. Just then, Ghost Rider arrives with Doctor Strange, Black Panther and She-Hulk. T'Challa tells them that they need The Avengers.

Loki and the others arrive at the North Pole. Cap tells Loki that there's still time to stop this and he has seen the God of Mischief show his good side from time to time. Loki says he's the good guy in the situation and shows him the first Celestial. He explains her arrived on Earth a million years ago in need of help but was instead slaughtered by Odin and his crew. Loki was able to restore him. Cap says the Celestials are insane and murder their own kind. Loki takes Steve under the North Pole to see 'the infection' of the planet.

Now with the heroes gathered together, Iron Man recaps what's going on. T'Challa says that since they can't find the Final Host their most pressing matter are the giant bugs. Carol is surprised by the current state of her friend Jennifer. Ghost Rider says She-Hulk seems to know what's going on. T'Challa tells everyone that Captain Britain and other heroes around the world are dealing with the fallen Celestials. Captain Marvel will take T'Challa to Alpha Flight so they can gather more information on the insects. Iron Man wants to take Doctor Strange to meet The Eternals for more about the Celestials. Just then Thor vanishes with She-Hulk.

Thor and She-Hulk arrive at Old Asgard to demand the truth from Odin. Meanwhile the heroes go off and leave Ghost Rider behind to find his own way. Rider feels this is all over his head but can't help but stay involved. He grabs a piece of Dark Celestial tech and will use the car as a bloodhound to find them.

Loki takes Cap to see who he calls The Progenitor, that looks like a giant rotting Celestial. Loki says he is the father of the Avengers and of everyone, and he is why the world must die.

My Opinions

This was a interesting issue with a lot of stuff. We see deeper into Loki's motivations which seems to go deeper than just messing with The Avengers... which I'm sure he's still doing it to mess with The Avengers. I liked the banter between Cap and Loki, especially when Loki called himself the good guy, and Cap tells him the Nazis he fought also thought they were the good guys.

There was also a bit of emotion and consequences left over following the events of Civil Wars II, where Iron Man and Captain Marvel were at odds and the whole event ended with Iron Man being knocked into a coma, and they kinda got into each other's faces a bit. Also, She-Hulk was knocked into a coma following a battle with Thanos during the same story arc, and upon awakening she found out Hulk was killed by Hawkeye (at Bruce Banner's own request, mind you) and it drove her into the insane version of She-Hulk we see now. This seems to be the first time Carol has seen her friend Jennifer in that state.

Ghost Rider is the outsider in this case, and Iron Man is rather rude to him, telling him 'we'll call you if we need another ride'. I am a bit confused by Iron Man not knowing who he is, because I assume he's met the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider before, and even though this guy looks different, he could have said 'who's the new Ghost Rider' or something instead of acting like he never saw Johnny before.

I have to say, I do miss seeing Spider-Man here. I've read several large Avengers stories which had him as a member, but I guess She-Hulk and Ghost Rider will be cool. I do like their characters and wonder what they will do next.

I guess my only downside here are some of the character faces seem a bit rushed. I don't mind it if they're far off in the background, but if they're the character talking and it's drawing your attention towards him or her, my god, draw the face right.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
