Marvel Rising- Squirrel Girl & Ms. Marvel # 1

By Mark Rodriguez

Squirrel Girl is the teacher of the same class that Miss Marvel is a student in. An attack by AIM to try to capture a student named Ember made these two superheroines team up to stop them. Ember turned out to have super powers and discovered she can bring videogame characters to life to attack people that bully her. After another team up, Kamala is starting to grow suspicious of Doreen being a superheroine. Meanwhile, Ember goes down the dark path and decides to become the supervillain Emulator.

The story begins with Squirrel Girl introducing Miss Marvel to her superhero buddies, consisting of Chipmunk Hunk, Brain Drain, Koi Boi and Nancy. Kamala's suspicions are even higher since Squirrel Girl is holding this meeting at Doreen's apartment of all places. Squirrel Girl tells the group of the recent video game attacks near the school. The group talks about the logic of a videogame creation somehow existing when it's not designed to move in 3D. Kamala feels left out being the only non-computer scientist in the room, except Brain Drain who is studying computer science.

The group try to look for some logical explanation rather than accepting that videogame characters are being brought to life. They think it might involve portals taking animals and painting them up to look as such. When they disintegrate, the portals are sending them back. They will check on local zoos for missing apes.

Squirrel Girl wants to team up with Miss Marvel later that night and almost blurts out that she's late for class. She tries to cover it up by saying, she's going after a certain class of criminals. Kamala also almost says she's late for class, but can get away with it because she would be at high school age anyways. Both women leave. Chipmunk Hunk wonders if Miss Marvel can shapeshift into a truck.

Doreen teaches class about computer errors and her using the phrase 'in a nut shell' as well as apologizing for being late for class, confirms for Kamala that she is indeed Squirrel Girl. Class ends and as the students leave, Doreen tries to let Ember know she's there for her if she wants to talk. Ember lashes out and leaves.

Once she's on her own, she goes into her Emulator outfit. With the help of her online friend 'KingofPWN' she is able to locate facilities that have items that can boost her power. She creates a videogame mallet and uses it to smash a lock so she can break in. She finds crate 1204 and bashes it open with the mallet.

Squirrel Girl and Miss Marvel show up and tell her stop before she digs herself deeper, if she puts things back and leaves, they'll be cool. They also ask her how she's pulling the videogame items in real life. Emulator asks why they're always stalking her everywhere, including Doreen's class. Squirrel Girl notices Ember caused the power failures and Miss Marvel asks if she's in that class. Doreen remembers her classmates and realizes that Emulator is Ember.

Ember asks how they know her name and Kamala spits out an excuse regarding a device Ant Man shrunk down for Squirrel Girl's ear to have facial recognition. Emulator tosses a videogame bomb at them and Doreen swats it with her tail towards Kamala who punches it through the roof and outside the building. Ember creates a go-kart and uses it to drive away. SG asks MM if she can turn into a truck, to which she says no and asks if SG can turn into a squirrel. Kamala decides to enlarge herself while Doreen rides her leg. When they're close enough, Doreen leaps off and grabs onto the go-kart. Ember opens a portal and pulls out a mech suit.

Ember drives into the mech's foot and keeps Doreen out. Now the mech is fully powered by Ember's will. The mech is around the size of the giant Miss Marvel who fights it while Doreen tries to get inside the suit to take Ember out of it. However, when she tries to climb onto the mech she gets swatted away. The Squirrel Marvel team-up decide to go for Plan B. If Kamala can grab SG's tail and toss her like a bolas, she can bust inside the giant mech's armor. Kamala agrees and is surprised that Squirrel Girl's tail is real and not just part of her costume. Kamala spins Doreen around and tosses her like a bolas and she manages to get inside the mech. Once inside, SG discovers the robot was on autopilot. She tells Kamala that Ember got away but now they can use the giant mech, but it disintegrates.

Doreen and Kamala finally reveal their secret identities to each other, and while it's cool to have Miss Marvel as a student, it seems Ember is leaning towards supervillainry. They still think Ember is using portals for her power, so SG calls up a friend who knows about portal technology, America Chavez. America Chavez is busy fighting alien monsters and tells them she'd be happy to help.

The story continues as Emulator has now unleashed a Chocobo upon the world and Miss Marvel has to handle it since Squirrel Girl is busy meeting up with America. Kamala tries to ride the bird and keep it away from her fellow classmates. A new student arrives and sees the kids running past him. This guy turns out to be Inferno who leaps in to help Miss Marvel. Inferno tries to burn it, but the fire doesn't do much to it. He says giant chickens don't like to be set on fire and this gives Marvel an idea. She grabs the chicken by the neck and tosses it away. The Chocobo lands in a water fountain and disintegrates, since Kamala knew that water was a weakness for the 'Riding Rooster from Complete Fantasy XXXVI'.

Ember asks to be left alone, saying it's not her fault a fog bomb affected her this way. Kamala recognizes that as the Terrigen Bomb which means she's an Inhuman like them. Ember gets a text from KingofPWN asking her why she's all over the news. Ember gets away and Inferno argues she's not worth saving. Kamala says she's not evil yet, but her new powers and probably making her scared and confused. Squirrel Girl arrives and has to call off her squirrels from attacking Inferno. She tells them there's a dragon attacking the city.

Kamala wants to talk it out with Ember. Doreen says maybe they still can, and sends her with Inferno to catch up to her while she brings a friend. Ember feels sad, not knowing all this would be so complicated. KingofPWN tells her there's an item nearby to help her upgrade her powers further. She doesn't want to, but she feels she's gone too far to stop now, and she won't let Miss Marvel's 'fake nice act' get to her.

Inferno tries to fight the dragon and burns right through him, smacking his face into a lamp post. Miss Marvel says the dragon doesn't follow the rules of a real life object. She tries to attack it and also gets tail whipped into a wall. Inferno recognizes the dragon from 'Skyscrolls' and says electricity is its weakness, but neither of them have powers involving electricity.

Ember breaks into a lab to steal a focusing lens off a ultrasonic imaging machine, but the dragon busts into the building. Kamala and Dante argue over improvising or needing a plan, when America Chavez arrives and defeats the dragon with an electric punch. America gets on their case for arguing. Kamala explains that Ember is and Inhuman but she doesn't understand what that is. Chavez says this means she's scared, which makes her more dangerous. Squirrel Girl arrives and has to call off her squirrels from attacking Inferno again.

Now together, Kamala and Dante explain that Ember might be an Inhuman and her creations follow the videogame logic of the games they come from. They hear a noise and Kamala walks into down the hall of science lab, wanting to talk it out with Ember. Miss Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Inferno and America Chavez encounter a bunch of zombies.

My Opinions

Well, now with America Chavez and Inferno coming into the picture, it feels more like 'Marvel Rising' and less like 'Squirrel Girl and Miss Marvel team up adventures'. But wow, how much of an airhead is Squirrel Girl for inviting Kamala to Doreen's apartment for the superhero meeting? I'm glad those two finally revealed their identities to each other.

I've never read a comic with America Chavez and Inferno. Inferno kinda came up like the 'kick ass now, ask questions later' kinda person, but he did pick up on the videogame logic quickly. America Chavez just seemed damned rude. Kamala and Dante were arguing, while trying not to argue, so c'mon, don't be so down on them Chavez. I'm still a bit on the fence on these additions, and they act like they'll hinder more than help the already strong teamwork between Doreen and Kamala.

The book is divided into two parts, which I guess is like a  Squirrel Girl and Miss Marvel crossover. The Squirrel Girl part looks pretty much like the art looked in the first 2 issues of Marvel Rising, that crisp and clear and almost Saturday Morning cartoon look. There's also funny little quotes on the bottom of almost every page, which I guess are Doreen's thoughts or whatever, but they're funny.

SG- Emulator is a way cooler name than what I called myself when I was in high school. You know what I called myself? GRASSHOPPER. I didn't even like grass! I was just stuck on a name and was looking out the window and saw a grasshopper. And just as I'm writing this, RIGHT NOW, I finally realize that this is essentially how a hypothetical "Bat-Themed Man" chose his name, too! Only he got way luckier with animals than I did.
The second half, which I guess is the Miss Marvel half, is drawn a tad rougher, and I guess more like how some comic books are drawn. I liked the other style better, at the very least for the consistency of what came before.

As for the story itself, I do feel bad for Ember. She is scared and confused, and like Kamala says, she was never told what an Inhuman is. Squirrel Girl and Miss Marvel want to reach out to her and talk her down. Inferno, and to some extent, America just want to take her down. I also think KingofPWN is up to no good and is most likely one of the AIM agents. It's clear he's manipulating her.

I do like Ember's outfits, changing with the theme of the creations she unleashes, switching from a mech suit to a more RPG-ish attire. I also dig the references, like the Final Fantasy Chocobos and Skyrim, while the comic tries hard to make the reference obvious enough for you to know, but not too close to avoid being sued. Complete Fantasy XXXVI indeed.

I kinda didn't see the point of Doreen's other superhero friends since they don't seem to be part of the 'Marvel Rising' group and didn't do much of anything in the story besides Chipmunk Hunk wondering if Miss Marvel can turn into a truck. I know she can stretch and enlarge her fists, or her entire body... but I've never seen her morph into things like Plasticman.

With America and Inferno joining the gang, will Skye, Carol, Patriot and Spider-Gwen appear next issue?

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
