Batman (The New 52!) # 6

By Mark Rodriguez

Batman finds himself at the mercy of the Court of Owls and their deadly maze. Trapped for days with nothing to eat and the only thing to drink being drugged water, Batman will test the very limits of his body and his sanity. His challenge might be cut short as one of the Talons appears behind him and impales him with a huge blade!!

Batman issue 6 continues with ‘Beneath The Glass’ as the Talon just impaled Batman from behind with his blade. He tells him he is going to die and his bones will be kept on display in the labyrinth.

When asked for any final words, Batman comments that he moved the camera… which gets him smashed by said camera. Talon lifts Batman up for the Court to decide his manner of death.

The Court is a ghastly collection of all sorts, both young and old, all wearing the same creepy owl masks, yelling for things like break his neck or his spine. They decide to ask the youngest of the Court, seemingly a little girl with an owl mask, to decide his fate… and she says ‘hurt him more’. The Talon tosses Batman against a wall and beats the living crap out of him.

When he had enough he tells them the Batman is finished and that his bones are theirs for the picking. All the Owls swoop down on Batman and start grabbing and picking at him. Batman is in so much pain, he feels like just letting go. Just then, Bats notices one of the portraits on the walls being of Alan Wayne, his scared tortured face begging for someone to help him.

Suddenly, Batman decides he has had enough and gets all the Owls off him. His words echo that of many readers up to this point. “I know that I am SICK TO DEATH OF OWLS!!!!”

Despite being fatally impaled through the gut and being weakened from thirst and hunger and having his ass kicked all up and down…. Batman suddenly snaps into Hulk Hogan mode and beats the living crap out of the Talon. Sure the Talon still gets in a hit or two, but this savagely enraged Batman beats the living shit out of him and then punches him right through a wall.

Batman yells that he’ll be back to take down the Court of Owls. He knows this city and that based on the taste of the minerals in the water he drank from the owl fountain… that he was near a river and the owl fountain was made of white marble. This makes the fountain more vulnerable to explosions. So he uses potassium chlorinate he got from the filament plates he stole from the broken camera from earlier to cause an explosion. He crawls over to the hole and lets himself fall into the river beneath. However… Batman can’t find a way out to the surface and seemingly drowns…

As for the Owls, an old lady in a wheelchair (also with an Owl mask) is escorted by one of her own, claiming what a gladiator the Batman is. They ask what to do about the defeated Talon, and the lady suggests they get rid of him, since he will never heal completely after the beatdown Batman gave him. The lady reminds them that they have so many more Talons… and we see a whole lot of coffins laid out before them. The lady says it’s time for them to wake them ALL up.

My Opinions

It was awesome to see Batman finally get some payback... but how in the heck did Batman get a second wind after being drugged, starved, dehydrated and impaled with led to serious blood loss? I know people get adrenaline at times of desperation, but c'mon! I know the answer for most is 'BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN', but maybe they should have left out the impalement cause it seems a bit much.

Batman barely escaped the deadly maze, and the Owls reveal they have tons of Talons, where Batman had so much trouble with just one. This comic showed how ghoulish The Court can be as entire families, even children partake in these sick activities. Even one of the youngest ones was eager to see Talon torture Batman some more. Sheesh. Either way, logic or not, it was cool to see Batman fight back.

WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN BATMANIA RUNS WILD ON YOUUUUU?!

The art continues to be awesome as they do a great job showing how broken and battered Batman was. I always thought Batman not having pupils was part of 'comic book logic', but here we even see how Batman's lenses are busted and his real eyes are exposed.

We'll see what happens next cause the Night of the Talons will soon be upon us! And this time I'll have the full story!

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
