IDW TMNT # 59

By Mark Rodriguez

After an adventure featuring Leatherhead, Traag and Granitor, Don stays behind on Planet Burnow to help the Fugitoid and the Utroms. Meanwhile Leo, Raph and Mikey return home just in time to see Kitsune and Alopex attacking Splinter!

The comic starts up some time before. Splinter goes to visit Jennika, who she put in charge of guarding Shredder's remains. She asks why set a tomb for someone that did so much harm to his family. Splinter still honors the man Oroku Saki once was.

Splinter talks to Kitsune and asks about the game she's playing with the other immortals and what the real stakes are behind it. She says it's only to live to die, to play or be played. Splinter asks if Shredder was one of the players, or the one being played. Kistune says Shredder understood that were no room for cowardice and weakness in the game, only victors and vanquished.

Angel and April discuss Casey and the current problems in their relationship. Angel tries to convince April that he's a great guy despite how he acts sometimes. Splinter steps in and agrees. Angel tells Splinter to keep an eye on Alopex, who has been acting strange lately. Some of their patrols have been cut short because she kept spacing out. April wants to use the archival library to cross reference a few things she found. Splinter allows her to do so saying they might need this information soon.

Meanwhile Kitsune meditates and awakens Alopex. Kitsune mind-controls Alopex like a puppet and leads her to Shredder's tomb. She also controls the Foot guards and they all run into Jennika. They ask her which master she serves, and she says she serves master Splinter. Alopex knocks Jennika out and tells the Foot to gather Shredder's body and head. There is a helicopter waiting for them outside.

Splinter goes to check on Alopex's bedroom and finds the mutant fox to be gone. He turns to see Kitsune, Alopex and group of Foot Ninja saying that soon he will be gone as well. Splinter puts up a good fight but soon one of the Foot lands a shot on him. Before they can kill him, Jennika comes to his aid. Kitusne unleashes Alopex's feral nature and sends her to attack Jennika.

As Alopex attacks Jennika, Kitsune grabs Splinter and says he was only a pawn in the game. This is when the Turtles arrive. Splinter tells them to save Jennika. Kitsune says it's too late and in the game there are only victors and vanquished and then proceeds to stab Splinter in front of the Turtles.

My opinions-

Why did they keep Kitsune around? After the defeat of the Shredder, Hun was arrested and Bebop and Rocksteady left of their own accord since they didn't want to be in a gang of good guys. Jennika led a small rebellion but soon she came to learn about honor and mercy. The only real snake in the grass left was Kistune. So why the hell keep her around???? How safe did Splinter and the others feel knowing they have their very own super villain living among them, plotting and waiting for whenever she would unleash her master plan. They should have just killed her, if that's possible. I know Kistune and the Rat King are said to be immortal but we still haven't seen them walk away from fatal blows or surviving with their heads cut off.

I assume Splinter was waiting for her master plan and hoping he could stop whatever she dished out, but still. He should have known it was way too risky, and whatever she had planned might have been out of their control. He might as well have invited Shredder to stay with them at their sewer lair, knowing full well he'd attack them whenever. Kitsune's magic does seem powerful though. I wonder if even if she was sent away, she might have still have been control Alopex from a great distance away. Meditation and astral plane and all that.

There's not much else to say. We saw a bit of April and Angel discussing Casey. We see that Jennika stayed loyal to Splinter. We see that they plan to review Shredder a lot sooner than I would have expected. I wonder where they were going to take the body since they had a helicopter ready and everything. I also noticed that Jennika's outfit is based on the 2K3 Foot outfit. That's cool.

What will happen next? is this really the end of Splinter? I don't know, though the cover for the next issue confuses me because it looks like the Turtles are attacking each other.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
