IDW TMNT # 55

By Mark Rodriguez

The Turtles, minus Mikey now run the Foot and are having problems with the Street Phantoms gang run by Darius Dun. Mikey joined Hob's team for a while until he found out that was working with Hun. When the other Mutanimals found out, some left Hob's side. We also discover that Agent Bishop has been studying mutants for some time.

The issue starts with Mikey at the old lair, before it was destroyed by Mousers. He picks up a game controller and remembers when he used to game with Raph, as Leo and Don looked on. He picked up a paper with the Japanese kanji for Father and remembered giving that to Splinter, who hugged him and said the best gift was any day a father can be with his sons. Mikey reminisces and wondered how everything got so messed up.

Alopex is with Angel, in her Nobody gear, on the rooftops, zoning out until Angel snaps her out of it. Alopex is having trouble staying focused, trying to deal with something in the back of her mind, some lost memory she can't seem to shake loose. The Street Phantoms arrive and Angel sets their plan into action. Alopex picks a fight with them and Angel films it so they can get more intel on them. One of the Street Phantoms manages to smack Alopex with a hammer that electrifies her. Angel wants to help but Alopex says she's fine. All they really need is a shot of them using their capes to phase through things. Alopex calls them out and does a jumpkick, to which she flies right through them due to their phasing technology. Angel says they got what they needed and she tells the fox to get some much needed sleep. Alopex flees the scene and the Street Phantoms are left confused, wondering if they won the fight.

Casey Jones joins the O'Neil family for dinner. April discusses her big plans regarding school and using her internship as an advantage. Her parents ask Casey if he has school plans as well. He says he'd rather help in the store. April mentioned they can give him as much time away from the store as he needs to focus on furthering his education and Casey rudely says he has other things in mind. April's parents break the tension by saying it's time to order.

Alopex serves Kitsune her dinner and is ready to head to bed. Kitsune tries to enter her mind, but Alopex has enough willpower to push her back out. Alopex bares her fangs, knowing that Kitsune is up to no good, and Kistune sets her palm on her head. Alopex infuses images in her mind, recalling her fights with the Shredder, Splinter and Raphael and even a fight against a bear when she was still a normal fox in the arctic. Kitsune says the bear comes in many forms and she must be sly like a fox to survive, not trusting anyone. She says it's time to put their plan into action, it's time to 'awaken the sleeper'. She sends Kitsune off to bed, saying to remember their visit as just a dream. Alopex wanders off with a headache as Splinter watches on from the shadows.

April and Casey argue on the way back home, due to how rude he was at the dinner table. She mentions that ever since they returned to New York he's been so distant and defensive. Someone litters on the street and Casey suddenly steps out. Casey demands that the guy pick up the soda can he just tossed, and when he refuses, he pins him down on the street. April pulls him off him and the guy gets away wondering what the hell just happened.

Casey says he's just doing his part to keep his street safe. April says, if anything it's her parents' street since they own the shop and they wouldn't want to see him beat up on litterbugs. Casey says it's better than her burying her face in the ninja scroll she's being working on all the time. April says she's fighting with her brains instead of her fists. Casey says she's calling him dumb. April says that's not it. Casey says he doesn't want to get weak so he won't be able to protect the people he cares about like the Rat King told him. April says the Rat King is a trickster that's playing with his mind. Casey says he's a fighter, and if it's not good enough for April than their relationship won't work. April says they probably do need a break and Casey storms off saying they finally agree on something.

IDK why, but I kinda got a bit of a Rocky vibe off of this scene. Casey is a bit of a younger Rocky Balboa at times
In Burnow Island, Fugitoid is working in the Technodrome  with the Utroms as they sleep in their stasis pods. Harold asks him if what he's doing is a good idea, and Fugitoid says they're helping their new mutant friend with his problems as a debt they owe him since he helped save Donatello's life.

Mikey fixes up the lair and says he's hungry. Leo, Raph and Donnie arrive with pizza and Mikey is happy to see them, but then asks why they came. They respect that Mikey wants to be alone, but say they miss him and how things used to be. The Turtles say they've been invited to Burnow Island to check something out and they want Mikey to join them like the old days. It will just be the four of them, without Splinter and the Foot. Raph insists they dig in with the pizza before it gets cold.

My Opinions

Good issue as the story continues to progress. Alopex continues to be manipulated by Kitsune but I'm glad that Splinter is keeping an eye on things. He should kill Kitsune ASAP but I guess he's waiting to see what her plan is.

April and Casey split. I have to admit, it's easier for them to be a couple when you're having a wild adventure with the Turtles, but not so much when they're in the real world. Casey feels completely inferior with April's big future plans and her family being all over that, while Casey just doesn't like schoolin'. I do have to say though, what did you expect Casey? When you first met her she was there to tutor you. Sure, she was cute and all but you knew she was big on books and studying. Did you kinda expect her to leave all that behind and become another bruiser?

And as for Casey beating up on the litterbug... I know this was kind of a throwback of the old cartoon where 80's Casey Jones would beat up on a litterbug the same way he would beat up on muggers and jewelry thieves, but wow. It just makes him look more insane in the tragic non-funny way when a more grounded and realistic Casey Jones does it. 80's Casey was a cartoon nutjob, but this Casey is just seriously messed up. I guess he's finally headed towards the direction of the 'real' Casey from the Mirage comics.

I did like Mikey going back to their old lair to remember the old days and it's cool to see the Turtles arrive. I have no idea how they knew he'd be there, already with hot pizza in hand. What if he was still hanging out the Mutanimals? I do like the Turtles being back in the sewers. In most other media they always start out in the sewers and eventually move on to other places like subway tunnels and abandoned churches and whatnot due to their lair eventually being discovered and destroyed by the Foot. I guess it's due to the 80's cartoon where they never left the lair throughout the entire series, that I just love seeing them in the sewers. After all, when you ask the average joe on the street if they remember the Ninja Turtles and where they lived, they're probably not going to say an abandoned church or a water tower.

I still don't get the big deal with making Leatherhead into such a big reveal unless this is just for the newcomers that are just now getting into the Turtles. You know it's Leatherhead, I know it's Leatherhead. We all know it's Leatherhead. I think even the newcomers can already guess as well since he's already been featured a lot in the Nicktoon. I'd say just show him already, but it looks like next issue we're finally going to get 'the big reveal'.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
