IDW TMNT # 53

By Mark Rodriguez

After killing the Shredder, Splinter now leads the Foot, hoping to keep them and crime in general under control. Mikey didn't like this and left the group, running into Mondo Gecko. A Foot Assassin named Jennika didn't like Splinter's non-killing ways and teams up with a new gang called the Street Phantoms to kill the rat. The Street Phantoms are defeated by Leo and Alopex, and Splinter is able to talk Jennika out of her treason. Meanwhile, Mondo Gecko welcomes Mikey with the rest of the Mutanimals, but they're all being watched by an agent from Dark Water.

The issue opens with the Mutanimals presenting Mikey with a cake. Sally introduces herself as the rest of the gang, since there a few Mikey doesn't know yet like Man Ray and Mutagen Man... and also warns him not to actually eat the cake due to Pigeon Pete being the one that made it. Hob also greets Mikey and says he's glad they're both still alive due to all their recent battles and Shredder's big defeat. He wants to talk to Mikey in private and tells the gang not to hog the cake for themselves.

Old Hob welcomes Mikey with the gang saying he's better off with them than with their family, but the Ninja Turtle tells him he didn't say anything about joining them. Mikey says he has his own reasons for leaving and just because his family is with the Foot, they're not bad guys. Mikey says he's going to eat cake with his friends and angrily leaves the room, leaving Hob angry as well.

Casey is talking to Detective Kara as he updates her on how the police is still looking for Hun, but they're also keeping the mutant situation under wraps to prevent a citywide panic. Raph shows up and asks if April knows about Kara and Casey tells him she's just a cop helping him find his father. Casey asks how things are going with the Foot. Raph says he's not happy about it, but he trusts Splinter with that much power. He's also worried about Mikey since he's off on his own now.

Mikey loses a game of checkers against Pigeon Pete and Man Ray points out that despite the bird's quirks, he's incredibly good at winning board games. Hob gears up and tells the gang that there's a gun shipment coming in and they're going to stop it. Mikey is surprised that the group is gonna stop some bad guys without lethal force under Hob's command, and is happy to join in.

April is busy studying on the scrolls she received from professor Miller when her mom comes in. April's mom says she probably knows who killed him and April confirms it was the Foot, but under Splinter's rule they're stopping assassinations. Mrs. O'Neil asks about Casey since they both have been busy with their own things. She mentions that she and Mr. O'Neil almost separated back when April was a child, also because they were both busy with their own things, but realized they both loved April and each other despite things.

The Mutanimals find the bad guys, and Hob sends Mondo in first. Mondo blends in with his surroundings looked invisible to the guards and he knocks them out. Um... I guess the mutant gecko is also part chameleon???? Anyways, with the guards taken down, Man Ray leads the gang into battle. The rest of the bad guys start to open fire, and Herman fires back, giving an opening for the rest to blast them with stun guns. Mutagen Man says Slash said a lot of good things about Mikey, and the turtle says he's basically 'a brother from another mother'. Mutagen Man says he wishes he had a friend like that since he's pretty hard to look at. Mikey says he hasn't seen ugly until he's seen General Krang. Man Ray blasts the last guy and Hob congratulates them for saving the shipment from them. However, as they all drive off, Hob stays behind to keep the weapons for himself.

The Darkwater agent, Winter, notices this and reports to his superiors, but they still tell him to stand down and just continue to observe and gather intel.

Elsewhere, Darius Dun is none too happy to find out that that the Phantoms were defeated, and two of the cloaks were lost in a battle against mutants.... but Lupo's gang trying to gather the weapon shipment was also stopped by mutants. Darius says if the ninjas and mutants want a war, he'll give them one and tells the Street Phantom member to get 'The Inventor'.

Back with the Mutanimals, the gang is celebrating their victory and Pete brings in pizza, which is mostly bug free. Hob shows up, happy to see the gang eating, but can't stay too long since he still has business to take care off at the docks. Mikey is suspicious and asks the others what exactly Hob does with the weapons after they stop the bad guys from getting them. Slash says he most likely destroys them since it makes the most sense. Mikey doesn't buy it and heads off. As Hob drives off in a truck, Mikey hangs on the back of it to hitch a ride and see what he's up to. Mondo Gecko sees that Mikey is following Hob.

Mikey arrives at some sort of warehouse and finds it filled to the brink with all sorts of lethal weaponry. As the Turtles looks on in awe, Hun is standing behind him, cracking his knuckles and ready to attack.

My opinions-

Wow, it's about time we saw what exactly Hob was doing with Hun. We did see Hob help Hun escape the cops earlier, but it seemed he vanished from the story. Now we know he was hiding from the others, helping Hob organize all his weapons.

That said, Hob is a hard guy to figure out. He has so many angles, so many plans. On one side, he's on an anti-human war for the sake of mutants and leads attacks against scum like Null for experimenting on mutants. But now he also wants to stockpile weapons to plan a war, most likely against Splinter and the Foot since he wants to convince Mikey that they're the bad guys now. He shows that he honestly cares about his group and their general well being... but also seems to be using them for his own motives. So, does he really care about them or just treats them good since he realizes he needs more soldiers to carry out his plans? As much as he's bad, he also shows he wants to change his ways, but then he shows he's still bad anyway or is doing good for the wrong reason. Ends justifying the means and all that. And then, for all the anti-human hatred... he's now working alongside Hun....

I'm surprised how incredibly trusting the Mutanimals are, though most of them do seem rather... nice. I do hope Gecko also followed along since I'm very curious about the fallout when he finds out the truth and tries to convince the others. Speaking of Gecko, even though I was confused at first, a quick online search told me that yes, some kinds of geckos can indeed change colors. I guess it's not that much of a common fact, I was sure that was strictly a chameleon thing, but I see there was really no mistake here. That said, I wonder if Gecko will ever lose his tail so he can show off the fact that he can regrow it.

This was also, pretty much our first good look at Man Ray and Sally. Their introduction seemed so rushed and last minute, they easily got lost among so many characters in the Mighty Mutanimals mini series, we hardly got to see what they looked like. I guess this is a chance to get to know these guys better, because honestly, I forgot Man Ray and Sally were members.

Now... the new art style... oy... It's gonna take a while to get used to. It seems this person is trying to somehow gel the cutesey art style with the more serious one from last issue. But the human characters look horrible with the exception of possibly Casey. Lindsay, April and her mom are the worst victims of this. One thing I see with several TMNT artists is that it's easier for them to draw the monsters and creatures like Mondo, Mutagen Man and Hob... but drawing regular humans is a whole different story. Like I said, this is gonna take time to get used to. I kinda wish the previous artist stuck around a little longer...

I'm curious to see what happens next... and who this Inventor guy is that Dun is calling out for since it might be yet another familiar TMNT character from the past. Baxter maybe or someone that still hasn't been introduced into the series.

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
