IDW TMNT # 35

By Mark Rodriguez

The Turtles are back in New York and deciding what to do about the impending threats of Shredder and Krang. Don, April and Angel visit Howard and see his latest creation, Metalhead, and Angel gains a super suit and starts calling herself Nobody. Lindsay, one of the people that used to work at the now-destroyed Stockgen runs into Hob and Slash, who hold her at gunpoint. What's going to happen??

Mike and Raph leave Woody after grabbing some pizzas on the way visit Hob. Raph isn't looking forward to seeing the mutant cat, but Mike reminds him of his role in rescuing Leo from the Foot. Raph says Hob only helped because something must have been in it for him.

Casey is visiting the cemetery and has flashbacks of when his mother was proud of him for earning a scholarship based on his hockey skills. Hun shows up with some guys and is done trying to reason with his son. Casey puts on his mask and is ready to fight, both knowing there's no hope of redeeming Hun at this point.

Mike and Raph arrive at Hob's place and Slash is happy to see Mike and the pizza. Raph walks in and sees Lindsay tied up with a mutated bird, Pigeon Pete, holding her at gunpoint. Hob introduces Pete to everyone, who isn't all too bright and keeps repeating his name to everyone. Hob explains he was busy trying to build a mutant army to protect himself from creeps like Stockman and Shredder... but seeing how Pete turned out, it seems making mutants isn't as easy as he thought it would be, so he grabbed Lindsay for assistance.

Raph wants to know why she was strapped to a chair, and Hob says it was so she could hear them out. Raph cuts her free and Hob tells her that his offer is still on the table for her. Hob also tells the others that Lindsay isn't exactly so innocent since she also helped poke and prod him, as well as Slash, and the Turtles themselves when they were regular turtles. Hob then shows Lindsay the sample of Splinter's blood he obtained earlier.

Casey puts up a good fight, but is soon taken down by greater numbers. Hun grabs him as is about to finish him off. Just then Hun gets hit by a taser gun and is fried. It turns out to be Nobody, and she uses her gravity gauntlet to send the other punks flying. Hun gets back up and is seriously pissed. Nobody uses a built-in laser gun and zaps a huge gravestone in half, so it would land on him. Hun punches the stone into pieces, but when he turns back to face them, Nobody and Casey are now gone.

Lindsay explains that she was working on Slash, but lost both Splinter and the psychotropic compound during a break-in, so Slash never mutated properly and let his savage instincts take over. Now with a sample of Splinter's blood and Slash right there in the same room as her, she can finish her experiment. Hob is against the idea and says they can use Pete instead. Lindsay says it has to be Slash due to the specific conditions under which he was mutated. Hob says they could start over with something else, and Lindsay explains it would take months to give her the proper scientific equipment she would need.

Slash suddenly takes the syringe and is willing to try it out, since he wants to be a hero like Mikey. Mikey and Hob try to talk to him out, and Raph seems keen on the idea since Splinter also wanted a mutant army (what?). Slash injects the chemical into himself... and then suffers extreme pain. Mikey tries to calm him down and gets punched into a wall. Raph loses his temper and jumps at him, and Slash easily grabs him by the arm and slams him to the floor. Lindsay tells Hob they always used to tase him down whenever Slash would lose control, and he grabs a big stun gun.

Slash is about to finish Raph, but suddenly stops when the pain subsides and his head becomes clearer. Slash starts talking normally (he always talked like a savage monster with a limited vocabulary) and apologizes to everyone, saying he won't hurt them. Lindsay is glad to see her theories were right all along. Raph is still angry and asks them where do they go from here.

Angel and Casey are on a rooftop, and she says she was able to find Casey since he's usually at the skating rink or the cemetery whenever he needs to clear his head. She explains where she got the Nobody outfit from and tells him it's time he steps away from Hun and the losers in his life. She says he has to find his own way and go with it, like she has. She also reminds him he's never as alone as he thinks he is.

Elsewhere, Leo and Splinter are hanging out in the sewers, in an abandoned subway tunnel.. and are being watched.

My Opinions

This was another good issue, pushing Hob's story along. Hob is a tough character to figure out. It's obvious he's on his own side, but due to his past we can only assume he's up to something. He says he only wants the mutant army for protection... but we can assume once he gets it he'll use them to try to take over the city. He seems genuinely concerned for Slash when he considers taking the drug, which for all he knew, could seriously mess him up or kill him.... but then again, we can assume it's because Slash is the kind of extra muscle he needs that he can't afford to lose. He wanted to try the serum on Pete, figuring he couldn't get any worse 'as much as he hates to admit it' which might mean he feels bad having to experiment on a fellow mutant. Hell, despite Lindsay being tied up, he was actually offering her a chance to work with them and help her out.... but then again it was implied things would get ugly for her had she said no. So, just how sincere is Old Hob? It's tough to figure him out, and having a sly evil sneer on his face most of the time doesn't help his case any.

Then we have Pigeon Pete... um.... what? That was totally random and completely unexpected. Now I do know in the 80's show Mikey had a pet pigeon in an episode 'What's Michealangelo good for', which he called Pete, but it was the Nick show that took it a step further and actually had a mutant named Pigeon Pete. Now here he is again, although a different version of the character, but they both share the similar trait of having limited intelligence. One thing we were always told is that the IDW crew and the Nick show worked independently of each other, especially when you consider the comics had a year's head start before the cartoon even aired. You would never see Old Hob in the show, just like you'd never see Shredder recruit Dogpound and Fishface in the comic. Hell, IDW got to use Slash before he appeared on the show. But now we have Pigeon Pete, again, a very different version of the character, but still. What a wacky coincidence. I guess maybe a small nod to the series? Also it might due to his limited intelligence, or maybe it's the first few words he learned to speak, but him constantly saying 'Hi, I'm Pigeon Pete' makes him seem more like a mutant parrot than a mutant pigeon.

As for Slash, I'm curious to see where we'll go with a more 'normal' Slash. I always saw Slash as the evil Turtle, but I never once thought he'd speak like a caveman when I saw the toy. The 80's cartoon made him dumb, and the Archie comics made him speak like that too, though not as dumb. This comic made him speak with very limited words. In fact the only Slash, til now, that spoke like a regular person would, was the Nick Slash.... so again, I wonder if that's another nod to the series. Again, now that Slash can talk and reason, I'm just as curious as Raph is as to where they will go from there.

And then we have Lindsay. Interesting minor character we saw in the first issue or two of the comic when April just started working at Stockgen. Easily a throwaway character, but they brought her back. It was funny to see her quickly get interested in working with Hob after seeing Splinter's blood. But I guess we can't blame her since Slash was her major project, and Baxter blamed her for a robbery that was random and wasn't her fault, and now she had the chance to prove if her theories were correct. It's just funny seeing a kidnapped victim turned into a willing participant.

Not much to say about Casey, Hun and Angel. Just a little continuation from last issue. It's now clear Hun has completely reached the point of no return and has decided to kill Casey in the name of the Foot. We can still see he's not exactly happy to do it, but he's more than willing to carry it out. And finally... Nobody's Angel... we'll see where she goes with her new found life as a super powered vigilantee.

Great issue all around. This comic also had the extra gimmick where one scene would end with a character from the next scene saying that applies in the current scene. Like, Hun surrounds Casey with his boys and we hear the line 'next make it quick'... which leads into the next scene with Raph saying that since he wants to get his visit with Hob over with. When Hun notices Angel and Casey are gone, we hear 'this is completely unexpected' which leads into Lindsay saying that about Splinter's blood and so on. Interesting how it worked out like that. Let's see what happens next issue.

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
