Aposimz (Halloween Comicfest 2018)

By Mark Rodriguez

I honestly have no ides what this one is about but the cover did grab my attention, and of course, with it being part of the Halloween Comicfest, it was free, so hey, why not? I guess it anything, it shows the importance of having a good cover that just grabs the eye.

Aposimz is an artificial celestial body covered by a super structural shell. Fifty centuries ago, humanity lost the war against the core and lost the right to live on Aposimz, being stranded on the frigid shell. Despite disease and killer machinery, humanity somehow survives.

Three months ago at the ruins level, several people in protective gear are scaling the side of a large snowy structure. One of them says they should return to the surface since even if they find 'more' they wouldn't be able to carry it back, and there might not be enough oxygen for the return trip. Eo says they came for combat training, but asks why they're leaving after finding some provisions. The woman with them says it's rare to find pip fruit growing in such clusters.

As the group heads back, the woman accidentally steps on a 'rust eater' on one of the pipes and screams, causing Eo to laugh at her. Master Ethero tells the group to stop messing around or they might slip and fall to their deaths. The team walks across the giant snowy pipe and scale a wall back to the surface. Later on, Eo needs to go pee and sees something that makes him call the girl, Biko over to see. Eo points out a bunch of people with Frame Disease, an incurable disease that makes you a zombie-ish walking skeleton.

Biko says it isn't rare, but Eo points out that there are a lot of new ones now. One the team says that Rebedom's invasions might have put the borders into chaos and the new Frames might have escaped from some town's quarantine. Biko says when people succumb to Frame Disease you lose sense of yourself. She wonders if you still retain some sort of consciousness and are aware as you're stuck drifting in that state for decades or even centuries. Biko tells Eo that if she ever becomes a Frame, to kill her. Master Ethero tells the team to be quiet. He heard something.

Ethero pulls out his rifle and looks through the sights. She sees Rebedoan Light Air Speeders and wonders if they're chasing something. They decide to hide into the hollow. Eo confirms that the Air Riders are actually coming their way.

They see a girl, dressed in black, flying towards them as she's chased by the Air Riders. She gets her am blasted off and crashes into the snow. Despite Ethero yelling out to not get involved, Eo runs out and tells he machines to stop shooting the girl.

The girl hands an object over to Eo, telling him to keep it safe from the Rededom Empire or the world will end. Eo takes it and is shot down. Biko runs over to him and the men on the Air Speeders want to kill them. Ethero takes action and shoot both of the soldiers down, making them crash their vehicles into the snow.

Biko tends to Eo and he says he's alright, his clothes were just scorched. The woman in black vanishes, leaving behind a machine as well as the artifact she protected. Ethero walks over to the fallen soldiers and shoots them both in the head, making sure that they're dead, surprising everyone else. He tells the others to help him hide the bodies and the vehicles.

Upon the team's return to their base, everyone comments on how weird the team has been acting and how Ethero's face has gone completely white. Eo explains how they found a girl that suddenly vanished, leaving behind some codes, some strange bullets and a machine. Ethero says he will return the items to the Rebedom base. Biko says it will take days to reach their base and they will kill him if they find him. Shio says even if they return the items, the empire will still find their castle.

Eo says they can fight them. If they use the code, they can become a Regular Frame, and Eo volunteers to do it. With two Frames, he believes they can fight back. Shio calls him an idiot and asks if he knows how many Regular Frames Rebedoa has. Shio is a Regular Frame but it cost the lives of 47 people before they discovered that he was compatible with the code.

Their leader, Zezo,  says he cannot bear to lose his existing family to the empire. He wants them to migrate the castle. Ethero apologizes that it has come to this, taking the blame. Zezo says it was going to happen sooner or later. There are many places where Rebedoa can't find them and they will find a better castle next time.

Eo narrates that Zezo has been their leader for 300 years and has taught them everything they know. He's wise and strong and Eo believed there isn't anything he couldn't do. But that wasn't the case....

My Opinions

Pretty good story so far. Of course this is like a spoonful of the overall dish so there are many questions to get you to buy the full volume. I mean, we got people that can live for up to 300 years, robot girls and people walking around with a zombie-ish disease. And I do wonder about the Frames. Do they lunge at people like zombies do? And what are 'Regular Frames' and what makes them different from the people suffering from Frame Disease? Do they get cool powers or something and why didn't Shio use them earlier if he's already a Regular Frame?

The art is ok, though it's one of those manga where it's drawn with those very thin lines, I mean that's OK, but that style always looked kinda like the ink was wearing off the page or if the printer was low on ink when mass producing these pages. Other than Biko, I find it difficult to tell who were guys and girls. I had to keep going back and edit the article when someone pointed out that Ethero and Zezo were actually males.

I do like the extensive detail that goes into the scenery. The whole scene with the team climbing out of the ruins and heading back to their castle plays out almost like a movie as it helps build this new world.

I wonder how this will play out. I might pick up a volume. What did you guys think?

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
