Comic Book Stash (part 3) 5/2/2026

 By Mark Rodriguez

So we got some extra books here and there and while it's not a crazy amount, it would have made the previous entries too long. Here are some cool classic issues we got that weren't part of Free Comic Book Day or the regular pullbox.

Gen 13 Bootleg # 4- We found this one at Bargain Books. It's a thrift store with a small comic book section with longboxes full of random indie stuff. Wendy visited once when the store was just opening so this is a return several years later to see how it is now that it's fully established. I figured I might as well grab this one for a reasonable price before I start tracking down the other issues.

Mirage Leonardo # 1- This is it, and I'm lucky I only got it for 10 bucks. It's the original Leonardo issue 1 in which he was attacked by the Foot and then thrown through the window of April's Second Time Around shop. This epic scene has been re-created by the 90's live action movie (though they switched Leo for Raph), the 2003 cartoon and the 2012 cartoon. I don't see the IDW or Viacom logo anywhere, so this has to be the original Mirage comic. I found this one at Black Dog Comics.

Black Dog Comics didn't participate in Free Comic Book Day persay. They didn't have the FCBD issues. However they did give us an awesome deal. Three free comics from their Marvel and DC dollar boxes! Wendy and I did some looking around and some good ones. Black Dog Comics also opens one weekend a month since it's more a comic book warehouse for cons and shows. Obviously FCBD was an exception, they open next on May 22nd.

Wolverine # 51- A 3-part story involving Lady Deathstrike and Sabretooth! Sign me up!

Wolverine # 52- Spiral enters the story!

Wolverine # 53- Mojo is now involved (which makes sense as Spiral works for him). Will Wolverine be permanently cancelled?

Tales of the New Teen Titans Raven # 2- A four part story about Raven! This was one Wendy just had to get and wasn't part of the freebies she got.

Tales of the Teen Titans # 61- The 'Search for Raven' story. Raven returns to the team with red skin.

Tales of the Teen Titans # 62- The search for Raven continues as Trigon declares hell on Earth!!

Tales of the Teen Titans # 63- Part 3 of this classic 6-part story as the Titans are trapped in their worst nightmares!

Along the way we also discovered a cool coffee and tea shop around the corner of Black Dog called Rostov's. I got myself some chocolate macadamia ground coffee as well as a 'coffee addict' since I need that boost to start my work mornings. Wendy got herself some 'Richmond blend' tea. She already got to try some and she loved it.

Also while looking through the Black Dog longboxes we found those ill-fated Malibu Street Fighter comics. I already own all three issues, as you can see from earlier reviews so they're not worth buying again. I just noticed looking back, that this was the special gold-plated logo version of the first issue. Still not paying 25 bucks for that one, even if I am missing the free poster since I gave it to a friend back in high school.

That wraps up the full haul that we got for Free Comic Book Day. We checked out new shops we never seen before, and got a lot of comics, pastries, a new cap and Hello Kitty keychains. Now we know where to get cool new coffee blends, and such. Definitely gotta get fellow coffee drinker, Johnny, one of  those caps.

Comments

  1. Hope you get Tales of the TMNT #4 and 5 with some new takes on classic characters for the next comic book stash.

  2. I'll have to see when the mood hits me for those... though it seems I missed out on issue 5. I'll have to track that one down.

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Dragonball Super manga Volume 5 (Chapter 28)

By Mark Rodriguez The crew resumes regular life after the events of the Goku Black arc. Goku is living his regular life and working as a farmer. Vegeta is training with Whis and learning to contain the Super Saiyan Blue within himself similar to what Goku did earlier. Bulma is now pregnant with her second child. Goku remembers the Universal Tournament that Zeno, the Lord of Everything, wanted to do someday. Despite the warnings of how dangerous and unpredictable Zeno Sama can be, Goku activates the button he was given and is warped away to see him. What will happen now? Chapter 28- The Gods of Destruction from all 12 Universes On Beerus' planet, the Oracle Fish asks where Goku went. Lord Whis tells him that he want to see Zeno Sama. Beerus says this is horrible and wonders who let Goku meet him to begin with. Whis reminds him that he showed up thanks to the tournament he held with his brother Champa. Beerus sees that it was his fault. On Zeno's planet, the two Zenos are playin...

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...
