Marvel Rising # 0

By Mark Rodriguez

A brand new superhero team will form with modern day Marvel characters like Captain Marvel, Spider-Gwen, Squirrel Girl and even Quake, AKA Daisy/Skye, popularly known from the Agents of SHIELD tv series (though she was in the comics too). There's an animated movie coming soon and I assume this free comic will help kick things off and get people excited. Let's have a look.

The story opens with Kamala Khan (Miss Marvel) joining her class on a field trip through the Howard Anthony Stark Institute for Technical Excellence, with Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) as their guide. As Doreen shows the class a computer from 1956, A.I.M agents storm the building. They are apparently supposed to be good guys now... but Kamala and Doreen both say that never lasts.

The agents want to perform some kind of experiment on the kids, and Doreen and Kamala both make excuses to leave the group, leaving a blonde girl in charge. Squirrel soon appears to take them down, and she quickly protects an Iron Man display from being blasted.

Miss Marvel uses her giant fist to smack some other agents away before they could experiment on the kids. Kamala sees the device they were using and noticed they are genetic markers. The guy leading the A.I.M squads reports to their boss that they have superheroes and will have to use energy weapons on them. Miss Marvel and Squirrel Girl team up to take down the bad guys. Doreen has an army of squirrels waiting outside and Kamala tosses her towards the doors like Colossus tossing Wolverine with the Fastball Special.

Squirrel Girl opens the doors and the army of squirrels charge inside, helping free the kids and attack the bad guys. The squad leader tell his men to take whatever data they could and run. Soon the bad guys are apprehended and Kamala and Doreen return to the students.

Meanwhile, one of the A.I.M agents managed to get away and download his data to his mysterious benefactor. This mystery bad guy found exactly what he was looking for, the blonde teenage girl that was with the group, Ember Quad. The story will continue in Marvel Rising: Alpha.

The next page of the comic contains Ember's file which says she is an Inhuman and has the power to store and weaponize electricity. The funny thing is the comic called her Ember Quad and this file calls her Ember Quade. Typo in the first issue. The rest of the book is just more ads for comics and trades.

So.... is it Quad or Quade?? MAKE UP YOUR MINDS.

My opinions

I guess this was a pretty short and sweet story of Squirrel Girl meeting Miss Marvel. I'm surprised they haven't met yet what with all the huge battles that call upon every general hero in the area.

The comic also explains that it's continuing the tradition of making timeless stories for new fans. It's a bit obvious with the large girl-to-guy ratio that the comics is following the trend of diversity that Marvel has been doing for its younger heroes recently, and I don't particularly mind. I like Captain Marvel and Spider-Gwen, and love the idea of seeing Quake in action. Though even I have to laugh when the article starts with 'From Captain America to Captain Marvel, Iron Man to Iron Heart', as if there aren't still many people saying 'who?' in regards to Iron Heart. And even though Carol has been around for years, the Captain Marvel movie next year will be an introduction to the character for many. But hey, if it helps bring in lots of new fans, go for it. Marvel is always changing and evolving and adding new characters. Why not make the most of it?

There wasn't much to say about the comic, it was short and sweet. The art was vibrant and colorful. I'm curious what is to become of Ember and who is the bad guy currently leading A.I.M. I guess we'll either find out in Alpha or in the upcoming movie, which honestly, I am curious to see. Again, sucker for Captain Marvel, Spider-Gwen and Skye.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
