Avengers- Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2018) # 1

By Mark Rodriguez

It's time for a whole new line up of Avengers as they start a whole new adventure. The Free Comic Book Day issue explains how centuries ago, several heroes killed a Celestial, and now in modern day, thanks to Loki, it is coming back for revenge.

The issue opens with Odin and descendants of Iron Fist, The Sorcerer Supreme, Ghost Rider, The Black Panther and Starbrand, who looks a lot like the Hulk, celebrating their victory over the Celestial. Odin seems pleased but the others are worried that this one was wounded and weakened and they fought in self defense, but the ones that might come will not be. The female Iron Fists asks Agamotto, the Sorcerer Supreme if they have any hope of victory. The Sorcerer responds that they are currently the most powerful forces on the face of the planet, and they are still not enough for the battle that is coming. As the Celestials arrive, Agamotto says something strange is happening to the planet, and they should not be worried about what will happen to the world if they fail, but if they succeed.

In Modern Day Earth, Thor, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark enjoy some drinks at a bar. Tony says they came a long way, from Tony recovering from his coma, Captain America being a HYDRA agent and now back to normal Thor was unworthy but now has a new hammer. Steve wants to bring back the Avengers but Tony says times have changed and they're not needed anymore. Thor says it has to be the three of them, like old time, it is what they most need now. Tony is less than thrilled to be thrown back into his life, when his A.I suddenly alerts him of danger. Very large energy readings coming from the sky.

Meanwhile, Black Panther and Doctor Strange are two miles underground, beneath the plains of South Africa. Doctor Strange was able detect ancient spells designed to keep something in and anyone else out. He recognizes this as the magic of Agamotto, but since magic died in a recent battle, the spells were broken and the giant thing that it was holding back is now gone. They see lots of holes, but none of them are big enough for something that's 2 thousand feet long to run through. The holes seem to have no end in sight and its gets hotter the deeper you venture through them.

Strange says they need the Avengers. Panther says there are no Avengers anymore. He says he sees the symbols of not just the first ever Sorcerer Supreme but also the first Black Panther, so they are already involved in this. He ventures through the tunnels and Doctor Strange reluctantly follows.

Elsewhere, we see Robbie dealing with himself as Ghost Rider, and Jennifer dealing with controlling her inner She Hulk. In space, Captain Marvel is detecting the space anomalies as well. She flies out in space to confront the cause and see that it is not an alien armada and tells her men to sound every global alarm they have. Steve, Tony and Thor are in a Quinjet heading towards the space anomalies as well. They have no way to go to space and Tony says whatever is up there is coming down to them.

Back underground, Panther and Strange find a huge cave full of eggs. They are from another world and lay dormant. Strange notices that several of the eggs are broken and empty.

Robbie is working on his car, which is possessed by Ghost Rider. He hasn't slept in three days since he is afraid of what he'd do as Ghost Rider. Suddenly the ground breaks up under him. Giant bug monsters crawl out and Robbie turns into Ghost Rider to make sure they don't hurt his family nearby.

T'Challa notices that Alpha Flight's global alarm has gone off. Strange also feels danger in the area as the eggs nearby start to hatch.

Tony, Steve and Thor see the giant Celestial, collapsed just outside the city's ocean line. They notice Captain Marvel nearby, looking worn out. Tony asks her if she killed it, and Carol tells them it was already dead when it fell through the portal. She only did her best to make sure it wouldn't land on Times Square. She flies back off telling them that there are hundred of these dead giants just falling over the sky, all over the world. The original Avengers Trio start to suit up and Tony says this situation is scaring him as he asks if the Celestials are so powerful, who is killing them all?

Just then another portal opens and The Final Host finally arrived with other giant beings by its side. Tony asks if there is anything Steve would like to say before they do this. Steve says "Avengers, Assemble!!"

My Opinions

This is pretty awesome so far. Similar to Free Comic Book Day last year with Civil War 2 # 0, the FCBD issue leading up to this gave us a bit of extra insight and backstory to what is about to happen. I'm a bit confused as to why there seems to be an ancient version of the Hulk a million years ago though... I kinda like Bruce Banner being the first ever to experience such an accident.

Speaking of the classic Avengers from a million years ago, it was surprising to see Phoenix among them. It would make sense, since she is also eternal, but nowadays with all the movies and whatnot, Marvel is really trying to separate anything related to the Avengers, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange from anything remotely X-Men related. It was amusing seeing Odin hit on her.

I loved the conversation between three of the original Avengers and their views. I don't blame Iron Man for not jumping right back on the saddle, recovering from a coma after fighting with Carol in Civil War 2. At the same time, Steve just can't wait to go back to being an Avenger. I also liked how they mentioned how Loki inadvertently helped create the Avengers and the pic of them in their classic look from way back then.

Tony brings up a good point that nowadays we have a countless amount of superheroes that they aren't needed anymore, but Steve and Thor agree that they are still needed. I liked that entire scene.

Since Black Panther and Doctor Strange are off investigating something else related to the same disturbance, and Ghost Rider and She Hulk not really involved as of yet, it'll take a while for this new superhero team to form. I do have to admit, nowadays the lines between the Avengers and anything related to X-Men and the Fantastic Four have been drawn, so it was actually surprising to see the Phoenix alongside the other warriors or old, and Odin hitting on her.

I can't wait for the next issue to see how this goes down. However, it looks like Ghost Rider and She Hulk will be too busy fighting each other to help.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
