I think it's safe to say that for many people, Spider-Man is their favorite Marvel superhero, just like Batman is the favorite DC superhero for most. Both are parts of superhero teams but are awesome as solo heroes, and both have the most memorable villains. Spider-Man's changed a lot over the years, between clones, between Dock Ock taking his body for a year, to co-existing with Miles Morales, the Spider-Man from an alternate universe. I wonder what's happening to him in 2018 in this Free Comic Book Day story.
The comic opens with Spider-Man swinging throughout the city, remarking that while he did become Spider-Man due to getting bitten by a radioactive spider, the tragedy of the loss of uncle Ben and the feeling to do what's right... he also does it to have the wonderful view above the city. Something he can't afford as Peter Parker.
We see Parker looking for a new apartment, seeing that this place he's looking at has a view of the 2 dumpsters in the alleyway. Peter and his friend Randy, son of his reporter friend Robbie Robertson leave the apartment and discuss how difficult it is to afford New York rent prices. Peter comments that with all the super villain battles there shouldn't be that much people willing to live in New York, and Randy says they just build a new restaurant over any place that got destroyed as a result of a superhero battle. Peter's spider-sense goes off and he tells Randy to watch out.
Boomerang, Rhino, Electro (who is now a woman) and Big Wheel walk past them having robbed a museum. Peter says he needs to take pictures for the Bugle and leaves. Randy says they still have apartments to look at and he'll claim the good bedroom if they find out.
Spider-Man appears before the crooks and Boomerang tells the gang to ignore his bad jokes and attack him. Spidey says he works hard to come up with new material and isn't boring like Wolverine as he dodges the villains' attacks. He also tells them that Boomerang isn't worth working for since he isn't very trustworthy. Rhino says Spidey can't take all of them on his own and he agrees.
Spidey jumps out of the way as Rhino runs into a car. With the car stuck on his horn and over his head, Rhino can't see, so Spidey tricks him into running into Boomerang. Electro tries to blast Spider-Man, and he remarks that she's a groupie of Max Dillon, the original Electro. She seems to hate Max though, and as she tries to zap Spidey, she accidentally hits Big Wheel and shorts out his machinery. However, this sends Big Wheel rolling towards a restaurant being unable to step on the brakes. Spider-Man tosses several webs at the wheel and uses his strength to stop it before it could hurt the innocent people inside, including a pregnant woman and her child.
With Spider-Man holding onto Big Wheel, he's left wide open for the other bad guys to attack him. He's stuck between letting go and letting the wheel kill people, or hanging on and being killed by the villains. Just then something blasts all the bad guys as someone comments that Spider-Man's bravery is commendable. This sudden assist comes from the Kingpin, who is currently the mayor of New York.
The police go for Spidey, but Kingpin tells them to arrest the villains and not him. He takes a bag from Boomerang and seems quite happy with whatever happens to be inside. Just then, Boomerang flies way with his Jetarang, leaving his cohorts to the police. Electro is angry and Spidey tells her that he warned her about working with Boomerang. Kingpin tells Spider-Man to catch him but he swings away thinking he should focus more on what the Kingpin was really after. He also got a text from Randy saying he found a place.
The new place is pretty nice and it's a three bedroom apartment. Peter wonders how they can afford it, and Randy says they got a third roommate. Peter recognizes this guy as the Boomerang, in his regular civilian clothes. The full story will continue with July's Amazing Spider-Man # 1.
My Opinions
So this comic might be half of Amazing Spider-Man # 1, as in issue 1 might have half of the pages I just read here, but the actual comic will have the whole story. It did feel rather short and the rest of the comic had advertisements and a bizzare adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy in a weird text picture style that's not like typical comic book panels that I really didn't want to bother with.
The comic was fun and gave us what we wanted, classic wise-cracking Spidey facing on several of his classic villains. I like Boomerang, he's a bit of a D-lister but he always seems to gather groups of other Spidey villains together to commit crimes. He's similar to the Beetle in that regard, and to be honest, both Boomerang and Beetle are possibly the few Spider-Man villains that didn't make it in the 90's Spider-Man cartoon.
Some interesting tidbits to pick up on, Spidey commented on Rhino quitting crime for a while, but it seems he's right back at it, and now we have a female Electro with the powers of the original. Most of all, Kingpin is now mayor of New York. I am curious as to what was in the manpurse that Boomerang 'gave' to Kingpin, since of course Kingpin is smart enough to orchestrate this whole thing just to end up with whatever was in the bag.
Boomerang being a roommate with only Spidey knowing who he is does create an interesting dynamic, and it gives him something else to do than just rounding up more villains for his pety crimes. I really am curious as to what shenanigans will come from this, other than just crime fighting. I might just pick up Amazing Spider-Man # 1 this July.

When I first saw 'The Views', I thought that was some kind of YouTube reference |

Don't ask me, I voted for Batman! LMAO IDK how they got away with that one |
