Free Comic Book Day 2018- MMPR Shattered Grid

By Mark Rodriguez

So the Power Rangers.... I know that by now there are tons of different incarnations of the Power Rangers, ranging from Dino Thunder to Time Force to I think... Ninja Steel which is the latest incarnation before they release Beast Morphers in 2019.... but for most of us, we'll always remember the first one, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Jason, Zack, Billy, Kimberly, Trini and Tommy, teaming up to stop Rita Repulsa and her evil plans that range from world domination, to just messing with them.

Boom Studios recently released comics based on the original Power Rangers before all the season changes. I haven't read any yet, but it looks like a free comic is a great way to start.

The issue begins with Drakkon having defeated the Samurai Rangers and taken their Morphers. Zordon and Alpha watch this from their Command Center. Zordon says reality has been broken and Drakkon's army grows stronger. He must request an audience. Alpha warns him of the consequences, and Zordon accepts.

Zordon warps out into outer space (you mean he can leave that huge glass jar thing?) and requests an audience with the Emissaries Three. These three look like a Red Ranger, Blue Ranger and Yellow Ranger, but their bodies are constantly morphing into all the different versions of the Rangers. Zordon asks for help since this time all of existence is at risk and he wants the Morphin Masters to help. The Emissaries say that the Masters can't be involved in the matters of man, and if he is seeking help then the Ranger he has chosen have failed.

So I guess Zordon is pretty much the Silver Surfer when he's out of that giant jar thing
Zordon says the teenagers he has chosen to be the Rangers have come a long way and have always fought with honor and compassion. He asks the Emissaries to watch them and see how they prove their worthiness as he explains how he recruited them.

At Angel Grove, the Rangers are hanging out at their usual spot where suddenly an earthquake hits. This comically makes Ernie accidentally spill the milkshakes he was delivering all over Bulk and Skull. Jason leads the guys outside when suddenly they are teleported away. They arrive in front of Zordon and Alpha where they introduce themselves. And with that these teens soon became the Power Rangers.

They sure didn't have Tinder and whatnot back in the day, LOL

Their foe was Rita Repulsa, who has escaped her prison from ten thousand years, and her minions. The Rangers would stop all of her evil plans and learn to use the Zords and even combine them into the MegaZord. Zordon explains that they were more than soldiers, they were also trying to make the world a better place.

Then we got into Tommy Oliver and how he was evil and working for Rita Repulsa. He was the Green Ranger and the Ranger had trouble since he wasn't a monster, but a teen like then. Eventually the evil spell was broken and Tommy joined the team as a trusted ally, until the very end.

Tommy died??? I must have missed that episode???

However, in another dimension, Tommy never did turn good and continue being evil and working for Rita. In this world Zordon is gone and the Rangers were defeated. Tommy, now referred to as Lord Drakkon feels he outgrew Rita and stabs her with his Dragon Dagger. As Rita died, Tommy will continue what they have once started together. Drakkon has formed armies and gone around killing people. His actions are breaking reality and Zordon asks the Emissaries if there is some way for the Masters to turn down the power than Drakkon gets from the Power Grid.

I know she's a bad guy, but she was cartoonish and over the top in the old series. It looks wrong seeing getting stabbed to death. if this was the TV show he would have just trapped her back in her space dumpster again or something
The Emmissaries say his Rangers do show remarkable abilities and resolve, so Zordon must have faith in them, just like the Master have faith in him. Zordon pleads for help and the Emissaries say their audience has come to an end. They said that upon Zordon's death he would have joined them in the Morphin Grid, but since he used his powers and called this audience, that can no longer be possible. They send Zordon on his way.

Once Zordon is gone, the Blue Emissary wonders if his concerns were justified and if Drakkon continues to amass power if it will put the grid itself at risk. The Red Emissary says Zordon has become too human in his line of thinking, and the path he and his Rangers face are part of a cycle. Something unending, unrelenting and unbreakable. Lord Drakkon sits upon a throne as his uses his powers to make all sort of different Ranger Morphers float around for his amusement.

My Opinions

This story promises the start of a big crossover event called Shattered Grid. This evil alternate universe Tommy will be able to cross dimensions and for the first time, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will cross over and meet up with several different Rangers team, all while every body is in their prime.

The comic does a good job of setting things up and giving a brief flashback history of the original Power Rangers TV show for modern day kids that have never seen it. We are at a time where modern day kids that watch Power Ranger Ninja Steel weren't born during the Might Morphin era. And it's also kinda funny seeing the Power Rangers from back then living in modern day with smart phone and 'swipe right' jokes.

The art is alright, with great detail to the Rangers uniforms and weapons. The Rangers kinda/sorta resemble the actors from back then but with more modern day hair styles and whatnot. I liked how the Emissaries were constantly transforming to different incarnations of the Rangers, it was a cool effect. One part that was confusing though was when the Blue Emissary was worried about Zordon and then said 'what you are fearing is impossible' as if someone else was bringing up the point. But, it was HIS point. Maybe they messed up and gave the speech bubble to the wrong person?

"What you are fearful of is impossible." But YOU were the one that started the conversation about maybe trusting Zordon? And what he says doesn't quite flow with what the Red Emissary said
I am confused with the part of Tommy being a loyal ending 'to the end' with the Rangers in black suits. Did Tommy DIE in the Boom Studios comics version or something?? I mean in the series, Tommy went from gaining and losing his powers until he lost his Green powers for good and eventually became the White Ranger, but he never died. Geez. Of course comics can get away with more than the tv show for kids could have, but I was still surprised to see Rita being stabbed to death with the Dragon Dagger.

This series will be spread out across both the MMPR comics and the Go Go Power Rangers comics as well as specials and whatnot. I might pick it up, or I might just wait for the trade if I'm really curious. I don't really know much about the other Rangers throughout the years, but it will still be cool to see the Mighty Morphin crew meet the others.

This panel. Just this panel. It's so awesome, I love it.

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
