Supergirl (2010) # 64

 By Mark Rodriguez

A Harvard student named Alex created the Flyover App that would track superhero sightings and make it easy for him to send robots after them. Supergirl was attacked by these robots and brought Robin, Blue Beetle and Miss Martian along to investigate. Alex has captured the heroes and Supergirl is trying to rescue them. The final battle begins as Alex revealed himself to be the Cadmus project known as Dubbilex!

"Good-Looking Corpse part 5" opens up with Supergirl trying to get back to her feet as Dubbilex monologues. He explains that he plans to use his Harvard friends as the bio-base for the next generation of drones. Blue Beetle and Robin are now under his control and are ready to attack Supergirl. Beetle blasts her and Robin tosses thermite grenades at her. Dubbilex says a few more of those and she will soon be able to spill everything about Superman.

Dubbilex asks the Father AI what's the situation above ground. The computer says that Catherine Devereux has run into some difficulty. Dubbilex expected as such and tells Miss Martian to get the information from Supergirl's mind, no matter what level of damage it might bring her. Miss Martian says everything will be as it should be.

Catherine is restrained in the hospital by doctors and sedated. The nurse says it's heartbreaking that she lost her mind. Lois looks at the picture of Catherine and her son and says she lost a lot more than that. The nurse asks Lois how she's doing. She walks off saying she's a reporter and she has a story to write.

Dubbilex says Catherine was a disappointment seeing that he loved her as more than just a mother. The computer says his emotional responses are becoming inappropriate. Dubbilex says that's the same thing he was told by Cadmus and asks if the AI is siding with them now. The computer can only report its findings and it sees that Dubbilex's judgment has become impaired since his exertion at Harvard. The bio-scan says it might be the result of the near-depletion of his still-maturing Kryptonian solar cells.

Dubbilex says it's unfortunate, as he blasts the computer with his heat vision. He rips out the computer's core and says it's time to set aside childish things. He says he's free at last. Supergirl flies in and socks him across he face saying it was a very poor choice of words. Robin and Blue Beetle prepare to attack her, but she knocks them down and out with her super breath.

Supergirl grabs Dubbilex and slams him against a wall saying she's tired of the games and wants him to go back to wherever he came from. Dubbilex asks how she will make that happen if her mind isn't her own. He tries to use his telepathic powers, but nothing happens. Supergirl slams him to the ground.

Dubbilex is shocked that his powers don't work and is now terrified of Supergirl. Supergirl says the most she can understand is that his mind is now trapped in a psychic cage, so its blocking out his powers. He asks how she broke free from Miss Martian's telepathic powers. She says she also had a friend on the inside, referring to Miss Martian who is no longer under her control.

Dubbilex is confused because he can still feel himself connected to her mind. Miss Martian explains that like he once said, gaining control of another telepath is a messy process. She says that a door opened one way can be also be opened the other way. Miss Martian ventures in his mind as we also see a flashback of when he told her to take control of Supergirl. Miss Martian told Kara to trust her since she knows how to free everyone.

Dubbilex is overcome by the feedback from the flood of memories and is babbling about how he wanted to save the world. Supergirl tells Miss Martian that she's very talented but now it's time that she shows off some of her own handiwork, as she punches Dubbilex and sends him flying.

Robin and Blue Beetle are back to normal. The heroes won but Supergirl reminds them that they still have a lot to clean up and to get the Harvard kids back home.

Supergirl tells Lois that they got the kids home safe and the reporter confirms that Catherine is also free from Alex's control. Lois tells Kara that they won't be able to publish the story since Cadmus cut a deal with the authorities. Officially, Cadmus was only trying to revive their 'fallen hero' Dubbilex. Kara says they were splicing Kryptonian DNA. STAR Labs took over in Dubbilex's rehabilitation in exchange of leaving that information out of the public domain.

Lois asks Kara how her team is doing. She says they're fine and she was expecting them to blame her for what happened at Harvard. Both Miss Martian and Blue Beetle feel she did good and picked the best people for the job. Robin tells her that he's busy and to bother him some other time. That's probably as good you'll get out of Damian.

Lois asks if Kara still feels out of Superman's league. Kara says he's in a league of his own, but if anything were to happen, she'll be ready to step up in the big leagues. Lois invites her for dinner at Luigi's, when suddenly Kara hear a passenger jet having multiple engine failures. Lois looks up as Supergirl flies off to save the day.

My thoughts-

This was a pretty fun story and like previously mentioned, it was the first time I got to see Miss Martian and Blue Beetle. We got to see some cool super villain cameos, even though they were robot drones, but it was fun. I liked the idea of the Flyover app and the trouble it would cause.

It's still not clear how Miss Martian chose to impersonate Elise, one of the Harvard kids. I'm thinking maybe when the kids were evacuating the college, Megan happened to see those three headed in another direction and then decided to morph into Elise. But if Dubbilex already had David, Justin and Elise captured... how was she hoping to trick him? It just raises too many questions and I wish there would have been a flashback or something to better explain how this happened.

One point that came up during the story is Supergirl's sense of self-doubt. With Superman out of town she felt she wasn't ready to step up if something huge happened in his absence. In this story she was able to form a team and despite feeling guilty that her teammates were captured, they still stopped the villain and won in the end. Lois was there to believe in her and help her regain her self-confidence and I enjoyed their interaction.

Overall a fun story. I notice there was another three-part story after this one that is the actual final story before the New 52. I have bought all the issues of 'Good Looking Corpse' back when these issues came out but I'll have to track these other ones down.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
