Supergirl (2010) # 61

 Mark Rodriguez

A Harvard student named Alex created a new app called Flyover where people can post up any superhero sightings, in hopes that villains will kill the heroes. Supergirl rescued a guy that jumped off a roof and was attacked by Metallo, Kryptonite Man, Parasite and the Silver Banshee. She is quickly overwhelmed by their numbers. What will happen next?

'Good Looking Corpse Part 2' opens with Supergirl getting beat up by the villains while still being confused as to where they came from. The kids she rescued earlier filmed the beat down to earn more points on their Flyover app. Supergirl says it's a good thing that she's not camera shy as she gets a second wind and knocks the villains off her.

As Supergirl fights, Alex's friends continue to say he's crazy for wanting to kill her. Elise asks how he knew all the personal things about them that he tried to blackmail them with earlier. Justin asks what planet he's from. Alex says he's from Earth, Metropolis to be exact. He intends to go there and says they won't remember anything about him as his eyes glow. Justin, David and Elise's eyes glow as well. As Alex snaps his fingers a fair distance away, his friends are confused as to how they got outside the building they were in. Elise asks why her lips taste weird.

Alex checks the app and sees that Supergirl has defeated the villains. He sees Supergirl is tougher than he thought. He tells his 'father' who turns out to be a computer to open up a live feed.

Parasite and the others lay in a heap as Supergirl tells the kids she rescued to get away. One of them says they don't want to miss the chance to get to the top of the villains leaderboard, referring to the app. Supergirl doesn't know what they're talking about and focuses on how to get the bad guys to Stryker's Island.

Alex orders the computer to initiate the retrieval protocol. One of the kids asks Supergirl for her number again while the other kid notices that the villains are vanishing. They re-appear in front of Alex who tells the computer to start the rehab cycle.

Supergirl tells the kids to leave, who don't want to listen so she shoves them towards the stairs. The kids complain that she can't make them leave since it's a free country. Supergirl makes her eyes glow and tells them she's an alien and their laws don't apply to her and the kids make a run for it. Supergirl comments that she hates doing the 'evil alien' act but it's too much fun. She also notices someone she knows is headed her way and she's curious what she wants to see her about. Just then Lois Lane arrived by helicopter.

Sometime later Lois explains the situation with Cadmus and shows her the files she was given. Supergirl says this is regarding chasing leads and helping government whistleblowers while following up on the disappearing super villains which is more of her thing. Lois says if Cadmus is creating a rogue metahuman with Kryptonian DNA, who else can she call? Supergirl isn't sure she's the right person for the job, she might have the 'S' on her chest but she's not really in Superman's league. Lois tells her to let other people be the judge of that.

Lois tells Supergirl that Perry won't run the story until her contacts check out. She wanted to give her the heads up because when the story comes through, she better be ready to help as she feels this is bigger than the usual Cadmus mad scientist plot. Supergirl says she'll do what she can. Lois hands her a smartphone, which Supergirl asks if it's like bluetooth. Lois comments that she's a lot like her cousin.

Lois tells her to check out the Flyover app, which is how she found her. Supergirl asks when she wants the phone back. Lois says she can keep it as long as she likes. Since she broke the story on phone tariff fraud a year ago, she can get a free upgrade whenever she wants. Supergirl checks out the app and sees Robin.

Alex also has his sights on Robin and decides to send some villains after him. By now, Kara Zor-El is in Gotham enjoying an ice cream soda as she checks the app. She sees shots of her earlier fight and the waitress is impressed by the shots. She gets a live update and sees that Robin is now under attack by Clayface and Mr. Freeze. The waitress serves Kara a refill, but she flies out of the restaurant, surprising everybody.

Robin is partially trapped in ice, as Clayface is coughing as a result of a thermite grenade used on him during the fight. The Boy Wonder demands to know who hired them and Clayface says they can't say. Clayface prepares to finish him off with a punch but Supergirl swoops in and gets Robin out of harm's way. Robin says he doesn't need her help but since she's here she might as well make herself useful.

Robin swoops down and stomps on Mr. Freeze's glass bowl helmet, shattering it. Supergirl blasts Clayface with her heat vision and tells her the last time they fought he put up a much better fight. Robin ties up Mr. Freeze and tells Supergirl he doubts the last time she fought him, Clayface appeared out of a portal from the sky. Supergirl asks what he means by portal.

Alex is annoyed that Supergirl got in the way again. He tells the computer to sever the teleport link and initiate protocol beta. He intends to send some villains after Blue Beetle.

Robin is surprised the villains located him thanks to the app. Supergirl says it's the only way to explain how villains appear out of nowhere moments after someone snaps a picture of them. Robin says that kind of explanation makes sense to a tiny mind and he's too busy looking for real crime to fight. Supergirl is about to fly off so she won't take up more of his precious time. Robin asks where she's going, and she tells him she's headed towards El Paso, since it seems Blue Beetle is the next target. Robin apologizes for being so flippant but says she might be headed into a trap.

Just then Clayface and Mr. Freeze start crackling with electricity and since Robin was standing close to them, he gets fried. Supergirl gets him off the ground as Robin repeats that this is a trap. Supergirl asks what is trying to trap them as Mr. Freeze and Clayface turn out to be robots.

My thoughts-

The story amps up as Alex goes from a seemingly bored and arrogant jerk in the last issue to a full on super villain mad scientist in this issue. Not only did he create the Flyover app, he also has a computer capable of teleporting robots that look and fight like real super villains over to the heroes, regardless of their location. On top of that, the guy has some sort of psychic powers which makes me think Justin and David were never his friends at all.

Damian makes an appearance in this issue, and I assume, the rest of the story and he's an arrogant little snot like he always is. I do like how despite his trash talk, he still cares enough to warn Supergirl that she might be headed into a trap. I also liked how Supergirl wasn't putting up with his crap and was ready to just fly off and leave him alone with his bad attitude.

The story still has some interesting threads as Lois Lane reminds us about Cadmus creating some sort of metahuman using Kryptonian DNA. Alex had sent someone to kill the son of the informant that gave Lois this information so he does have some sort of connection with this. And why is Alex referring to his super computer as his father? The plot continues to thicken.

I like to bring up random ads from older comics but this one didn't have anything too crazy. I do like the ad for the DVD (and Blu-Ray) release of the All Star Superman animated movie. I own it but haven't seen it yet. I might have to check it out and review it one of these days.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
