The New 52- Forever Evil # 2

By Mark Rodriguez

Evil versions of the Justice League from another dimension arrived and announced they killed the Justice League. They also gathered all the villains from throughout the DC universe and let them run free. Ultraman, the evil Superman, pushed the moon in front of the sun to shroud the world in darkness. They also captured Nightwing and made an example out of him by beating him half to death and unmasked him as Dick Grayson to the general public at large. It seemed the bad guys have finally won and the world was theirs.

During the month of October 2013 had every issue with a bad guy replacing the main hero character. An issue about Wonder Woman would be about Cheetah instead, or the issue of Aquaman would be about Ocean Master instead. The tales would be about either their New 52 origins or give more detail on what they were doing before or during the Forever Evil events. I found out the hard way that they were made in limited supply and sold out quick, making them hard to find. I was kinda upset at Bent Wookee (sorry guys) for missing the issues related to the Bat-Villains and other friends of mine expressed the same concern with their own comic book shops.

'Rats' begins with Lex Luthor walking around the dark underground tunnels of Lexcorp considering himself the one to stop the Crime Syndicate and save the world from their tyranny. He spots a security guard named Otis. Nothing electric seems to be working except anything with a screen that now reads 'This world is ours'.

Elsewhere, Tim is gathering up the Teen Titans to attack the Justice League Tower to rescue Nightwing, who he's convinced is still alive. Superboy asks what the Titans can possibly do if the Justice League themselves have fallen to the Crime Syndicate. Wonder Girl wonders what else Tim is keeping from them, but he says it doesn't matter. He wonders if they know Nightwing is Dick Grayson, how long will it take for the world to discover the rest of the Bat Family.

Elsewhere all the villains wreak havoc all over the cities, including Gotham, Central City and Washington DC. The Syndicate is watching how everything spreads across the world. Owlman and Ultraman want to plan everything out carefully, but Johnny Quick is over-anxious to go out and cause destruction. He gets bored and runs off with Atomica to have some fun. Superwoman asks if they should follow them. Ultraman says they've been apart for too long, so let them get it out of their system.

Power Ring says his hand is in pain since the ring is doing something to him. Deathstorm examines him as the ring seems to be rotting his hand, and the effects are extending to his arm all the way up to the side of his neck. Despite this, Deathstorm says to 'give it another week'.

Ultraman asks Alfred about their 'hitchhiker' a man strapped to a chair with a bag over his head. Owlman seems anxious to kill him for 'what he did to the team', but Ultraman says they need him alive to throw him at 'that thing that came to their Earth'. Whatever it is, he feels it will follow them to this Earth. Superwoman agrees with Owlman. Ultraman says the man will live or they will answer to him. Owlman agrees as long as they also keep Dick Grayson alive, in memory of the one he knew. Ultraman says he's nothing, and warns Superwoman to never disagree with him in front of Owlman again. Grid, basically Cyborg but all machine and evil, warns that the Rogues (Flash's enemies) aren't going along with the other villains' plans. Ultraman tells him to send Deathstorm and Power Ring after them.

Once Ultraman is gone, Alfred reminds Owlman that this Dick Grayson is not the same one he knew. Superwoman worried since she is pregnant with Olwman's child and is concerned of the consequences when Ultraman finds out. Owlman ensures they'll have the preparations ready for when that happens. Superwoman wants this world for their child to live in.

Meanwhile, Lex and Otis continue to walk down the underground passages of Lexcorp and finds a being locked inside a capsule named Subject B-Zero, but unfortunately it needs another 5 years to be fully ready.

Elsewhere Commissioner Gordon has his tanks and cops ready to open fire upon the supervillains, but Johnny Quick and Atomica show up. Gordon and the rest are ready to open fire on them, but Johnny has already snatched all their bullets and throws it back at them with the same speed and force as if they were fired from a gun. Just then Superboy arrives to melt the bullets alongside the rest of the Teen Titans.

Back to Luthor, he explains that he was growing a clone from Superman from a single cell from Kryptonian blood and it would take a decade to fully form. However, it's been only five years and with all the power out and solar panels darkened, the clone is going to die anyway. The capsule is opened and out steps what you and I know as Bizzaro. Lex tells the creature that he will obey him and will rest him out by telling him to kill Otis. The monster seems confused. Otis is surprised and shoots at it, but the bullets bounce off. Lex yells at the monster to kill Otis. Otis then pulls his gun on Luthor. This makes the monster attack and kill the guard with his bare hands. Lex says 'that'll do' and walks off with the clone following him.

Back to the Titans, Johnny Quick is running in circles, causing a cyclone that sends all the tanks and people flying around. Wonder Girl says they have to save the people inside, but Atomica, tiny-sized woman that she is, flies into her mouth and makes her choke.

Johnny grabs onto Impulse and notices that his vibration frequency is off. He notices he must be from the future and shakes him around at a violent speed. Suddenly a time warp opens and sucks Impulse as well as the rest of the Titans into it. Atomica flies out of Wonder Girl's mouth and asks what happened. Johnny says he tugged on the kid, and the future tugged back. With the Titans sucked into Impulse's timeline, Johnny Quick and Atomica realize they're finished and run off to find other heroes to fight.

Elsewhere, Luthor wears his infamous purple and green metallic outfit and Bizzaro is wearing an inside-out Superman outfit, declaring that since the Justice League are dead and Superman is gone.... this is a job for Lex Luthor.

Meanwhile, the scientists at S.T.A.R labs are surprised to see a portal open, which brings in Batman and Catwoman, both in horrible shape and carrying what is left of Cyborg. Cyborg's father is shocked and the other scientist asks what happened to the rest of the Justice League. Batman says they didn't make it....

My Opinions-

This is a pretty cool story and I like how I didn't really have to buy all the other Villains Month issues to keep track of what's going on. From what I heard other issues like Justice League and Justice League of America will lead into this, but it seems they're just extra side-stories that I don't really need to read to continue onto Forever Evil # 3. Though obviously Titans fans are gonna have to read their latest issue to see how they return to the present, though I do wonder if they'll encounter a future that is ruled by the Crime Syndicate.

It's also interesting to see Lex Luthor set out to save the world instead of helping the villains rule it. He's a smarter villain in that sense. He does want to rule the world and all that evil jazz, but he does see the Justice League as a necessary um... goodness that the world needs when some other force is trying to rule or destroy the world. Of course he also sees it as a way of getting fame and glory for being the man that saved the world, assuming he succeeds. In a similar sense the Rogues are also against destroying cities as ordered. They might be bad guys, but Cold and his crew focus mostly on theft and robberies and never things like cold blooded murder.

Still too soon to give any opinion on Bizzaro. I did notice he did not attack the guard until he threatened to shoot Luthor. And afterwards he seemed surprised that he killed the guy so easily. He might not be as evil as Lex is hoping for. I do wonder what the Bizzaro issue of the Villains Month was about if he was just introduced here. Also I do believe naming the guard Otis is a reference to the idiotic sidekick Lex sometimes had in the Reeve Superman movies.

This is an exciting storyline so far. Can't wait to see what happens next.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
