Double Dragon comic # 3

By Mark Rodriguez

The villain Nightfall has sent an assassin that can turn invisible named Stelth to kill the sensei of Billy and Jimmy Lee. As they go to mourn at his grave, Stelth sends an army of thugs after the brothers, but used her powers to make them all look like clones of each other. Despite Nightfall now having the Dragon Power, the Lees are still able to defeat the huge gang with their own martial arts skills. However since all the bad guys looked like Billy and Jimmy, the brothers now think the other is a fake and will fight to the death, with Stelth waiting to kill the winner!

The brothers face each other and suddenly their armor appears on them. They each think it's some sort of trick but it doesn't stop them from the fight that's about to break out between them. Stelth is still hidden but is also confused as to how they got their armor.

Meanwhile Nightfall has gained the powers of the Double Dragons, but is confused because the power is going right back into the statue. Billy decides to go for the kill right off the bat and summons his vibe-chucks. Jimmy easily dodges all his moves and punches him in the face while he's talking. Billy manages to kick him in the throat and back flip away to get some space. Billy then tosses his dazzle-stars, I guess bright flashing shuriken that blinds Jimmy, and he hits him on the back of the head with a flying jumpkick.

illy whips out another weapon, a staff he calls the Dragon Lance, and he swings it at Jimmy, who blocks it with a chunk of broken gravestone. Jimmy whips out his own Dragon Lance and the both continue to fight it out. As their staves collide, a huge energy burst knocks them both out.

Elsewhere two guys try to jack a car and unknowingly unlock the trunk of the car Stelth locked Marion into. Marion remembers she's a cop and not a damsel in distress and takes down the crooks. She then flies off in her hovercar to warn the Lees about Stelth.

The brothers get back up and continue fighting. Billy manages to grab Jimmy and punches the hell out of him. Stelth makes her move and tells Billy that he just beat the crap out his brother, and proceeds to do the same to him. She then unleashes sharp claws and is about to finish him off when suddenly someone shoots her in the hand. It's Marion, who was actually aiming for her head. Everyone goes for the kill in this comic.

The Lees awaken in Marion's apartment and she tells them she's surprised that they somehow were able to summon the Dragon Power. They admit if it wasn't for that, they might not have had the stamina to outlast so many fighters earlier on. They figure that Nightfall must have lost the Dragon Force... but if he doesn't have it... then who does?

Just then Nightfall sees that the dragon statue has come to life and it attacks him. The dragon flies out into the night as now the Lees have lost the ability to control the Dragon Force. The sensei's words warn that power that cannot be controlled will destroy he who wields it.....

My Opinion-

Pretty good issue, and the brothers put up a decent fight. The comic screams 'extreme 90's' with everyone willing to kill everyone, the good guys included. I like how Jimmy said 'that does it, you either stop this now or I'm gonna take you out' later on in the fight... when he started the fight by trying to take Jimmy's head off with his nunchucks right off the bat. I mean honestly, as a 90's kid, I would have been eating up all the intense martial arts violence and 'these guys aren't messing around' attitude.

I am surprised neither brother figured out they were actually fighting the other for so long. Now I can give you their superhero armor popping up could have been another one of Stelth's illusions, but did they really think an impostor would also be able to whip up the dazzle-stars and vibe-chucks? Then Jimmy summons the Dragon Lance, and isn't surprised that Billy was able to summon one of his own. And they didn't recognize each other's fighting style? Really?

Either way it was still fun to read and the fighting was cool. I have to admit some panels do look more like they're doing their best to pose as epic as possible instead of actually dodging an attack, but most of the time it was nice to look at.

So I guess the Dragon Force does indeed give the bros increased stamina, as well as being able to whip out magical weapons out of nowhere. Now it makes more sense that they were able fight that huge gang and still fight it out between each other. I'm anxious to see what happens next.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
