Sonic Universe # 52- Worlds Collide Part 5

By Mark Rodriguez

Dr. Wily and Dr. Eggman teamed up, captured Sonic's friends to turn them into Roboticized Masters and sent them to collect the Chaos Emeralds. They used Metal Sonic and Copy Bot to trick Megaman and Sonic into fighting each other. After teaming up to turn Tails back to normal, the heroes realized they were tricked and who's responsible. Metal Sonic and Bass kidnapped Dr. Light, and Tails and Roll work together to open a Ring Portal so that Megaman, Sonic, Protoman, Tails and Rush can follow them into the Skull Egg Zone and rescue Dr. Light. What awaits them in this weird world created by the evil mad scientist duo?

The story begins with our heroes being confused by the weirdness of the Skull Egg Zone, which is a mish-mash of the Sonic and Megaman games. Tails explains that they come from two different universes, Copy Bot tries to shoot at them but Rush pushes Sonic out of the way. Copy Bot takes the credit for blasting Silver earlier, as well as helping capture several of Sonic's friends. Sonic is ready to fight, and Copy Bot calls for the Genesis Unit, consisting of Buster Rod G, Hyper Storm H, and Mega Water S, who the original bosses on that SEGA Genesis game Mega Man Wily Wars.

Meanwhile, Dr. Light's communication, sent before he was kidnapped, finally reached Duo in space and explains the situation. Duo heads to Earth.

Megaman deals with Copy Bot while the others deal with the Genesis Unit. Eggman and Wily enjoy the show, and Blaze Woman and Silver Man arrive with the final Chaos Esmerald that they needed. Eggman says now they got the real power, and Wily points out that HIS Genesis Unit is handling Eggman's enemy. Eggman says the Chaos Emeralds are more powerful and they come from his world. Wily says they only got them thanks to the Roboticized Masters based on his Robot Master design. Eggman reminds him it was also thanks to his Roboticizer. After a mean glare, they agree that whichever hero lives the longest will represent which world is the best.

Sonic dodges Buster Rod's attacks and compares him to a monkey badnik named Kiki that he defeats a lot. Buster then turns into 4 copies and they surround the hedgehog. Sonic asks for help, but Tails is being smacked around by Hyper Storm. Protoman is also having trouble with Mega Water S. Megaman flies on Rush and Copybot flies on an Item 2 Rocket, both shooting at each other. Copybot says that as Mega's perfect copy, he can do anything he does and will never be able to win because he 'has nothing new to bring to the table'.

Megaman then uses the new weapon he acquired from Tails when he was Tails Man, the Tail Wind. It's a strange looking tornado attack that not only takes down Copy Bot, but also Buster Rod and Hyper Storm. Mega Water notices that his unit is gone and his shield attack is broken... so he tries to make a run for it, but Protoman blasts him down.

Megaman and Protoman are confused that Copy Bot and the Genesis Unit were back, due to them being destroyed, I.C chips and all. Tails asks if Wily couldn't just rebuild and reprogram them. Protoman explains their I.C chips, which gives them their unique personality are too complicated to be reproduce. Sonic decides they should keep on moving before they face a real threat.

As they start walking, they run into things from both their games. Megaman almost gets burned by one of Eggman's fire traps, and Sonic walks right into one of the disappearing/reappearing blocks. They see a tall hill and jump to the top by the several springs that are all over the hill itself. The heroes catch sight of the Wily Egg and determine it's the kind of hideout that both Eggman and Wily would be crawling around in. Tails mentions they still haven't found their friends yet.

Just then Eggman and Wily arrive in their little flying devices (they even have that in common) and unleash their 8 Roboticized Masters, Silver Man, Shadow Man, Blaze Woman, Espio Man, Vector Man, Charmy Man and Rose Woman. What will happen now?

My Opinions

Now that Megaman and Sonic have joined forces, the story can continue as they venture into the Skull Egg Zone. Most of the fun of this issue came with the backgrounds and how they mix stages from the Megaman games and Sonic games. Even though I never played Megaman The Wily Wars, it was cool seeing these characters in here. For those that don't know, this game was made for the SEGA Genesis and was basically a Genesis-graphics version of Megaman 1, 2 and 3. Once you beat the games, you have a whole new stage called the Wily Tower in which you face the Genesis Unit.

of course it's a fun irony they form the Genesis Unit on a Genesis game
It's also worth mentioning the Genesis Unit characters are based on characters from the classic Journey to the West story, which is also where Dragonball drew inspiration from. Buster Rod G is based on Son Wukong, which is of course where Son Goku's original design was based from (before all the Saiyan business). Hyper Storm H was based on Zhu Baije, which is where Uulong's character and personality was based on. Mega Water S was based on Sha Wujing, which is where Desert Bandit Yamcha drew inspiration from.

It was a fun story and we see Megaman can now use the new weapon he obtained from Tails Man. The scientists are also starting to argue and bicker and slowly dropping the buddy-buddy routine. Sonic does take a bit of a back seat in this one. Even when a fight broke out, Sonic himself was mostly just dodging attacks and comparing Buster Rod with Kiki.

Not really seeing the resemblance there Sonic.
I guess the only downside is the art, specially with the scenes between Megaman and Copy Bot. The art seemed a lot cartoonier and rushed. I don't know... maybe it was this artist' style but it just didn't flow with the rest of story did. Now I know this is based the Sonic Universe series... but last issue wasn't drawn like that. I have the feeling this issue will stand out if ever placed on part of a graphic novel due to the art shift.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
