AEW Dark- 1/26/2021 Review (Women Matches)

 By Mark Rodriguez

Looks like this time the women have taken over Dark with a total of 6 matches, including Shanna out to continue her streak, the return of fan favorite Abadon and Cody's first student Brooke Havok making her debut. Let's check them out.

Match 1- Shanna VS KiLynn King

Both women start grappling and King tries to arm-drag Shanna but she lands and does a cartwheel. Shanna catches her arm and flings her into the mat and then hits her a flying headscissors  and a kick to the face. Shanna picks her up and socks her in the face. King flings Shanna into the ropes, leaving her hanging on them. However, Shanna was faking her out and she out of the way as King ran towards the ropes and falls outside the ring.

Shanna was going to do a suicide dive but before she could start, King grabs her leg and pulls her out of the ring. She tries to slam her face into the mat but Shanna stops it and and Kilynn gets her face slammed into the mat instead. Shanna gets Kilynn back into the ring and spins her so her head is hanging off the mat and she clocks her.

As Shanna climbs into the ring, KiLynn manages to strike a few blows and then pushes her back against the ropes where she's upside down. Kilynn flips Shanna forward so she's caught face-first into the ropes. With Shanna down, KiLynn goes for a pin but she kicks out.

KiLynn slams Shanna's face into the turnbuckle and starts delivering some nasty chops to her. She then kicks and stomps all over the Dragon Slayer, and steps back, running into her and driving her knees into her face. She goes for another pin but can't secure the win. KiLynn gets her opponent in a Dragon Sleeper lock. Shanna gets up and starts slamming her knee into KiLynn's face to break from. Shanna climbs on her and gets her into a Dragon Sleeper combined with a Body Scissors. Kilynn backs up, slamming her opponent's back against the turnbuckle. She runs into her but Shanna gets out of the way, letting Kilynn slam herself into the turnbuckle.

This time Shanna starts throwing chops at KiLynn, lighting her up. She knocks KiLynn down with a jumping clothesline and then hits her with a Stunner. KiLynn kicks out of a pin attempt and slows Shanna down with a kick to the face. She starts to climb the ropes and Shanna quickly runs up and uppercuts her. As KiLynn falls back, her legs still wrapped around the ropes, Shanna knees her in the back and leaves her dangling upside down. Shanna climbs on the turnbuckles and poses before jumping and stomping down on KiLynn King's face.

Shanna hits Kilynn with a running knee and grabs her for a Tiger Suplex. Shanna wins another match and continues her hot streak as she's on the way to face Dr. Britt Baker on Dynamite.

Match 2- Brooke Havok VS Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D (with Reba)

Baker grapples with Brooke and slams her facefirst into the mat. Baker picks her up and Brooke shoves her back. As they grapple again, Baker gets her into a headlock takedown. The student of the Nightmare Factory manages to reverse it and gets Baker into a side headlock. As both women go down, Baker quickly grabs Brooke into a headscissors. As Brooke tries to fight out of it, Baker grabs her into another headlock, picks her up and brings her back down with a suplex.

As Baker picks up Brooke, Brooke slaps her across the face, and then smacks her again. She runs and grabs Baker with a flying headscissors, sending her to the mat. Brooke does a dropkick to Baker's face to keep her from getting up. Brooke gets on the ropes but Baker runs over and rattles the ropes, making her lose her balance. She then flings her off the ropes and onto the mat. Baker grabs her leg and starts kicking at her hamstring. She then wraps her legs around the same leg and reaches for Brooke's arms, holding her up. Baker then kicks the back of her head, delivering a dead curb stomp on Brooke!

Reba slips Baker her glove and she uses it on her submission move, the 'LockJaw' and Brooke screams and quickly taps out. Even though the glove was on the wrong hand, Baker was able to make it work and won the match.

Match 3- Abadon VS VertVixen

The Living Dead Girl wastes no time running into Vertvixen with a knee to a gut and then pummels her down. She swings her into the turnbuckle and continues attacking her with headbutts to the breadbasket ending with a running knee. Vertvixen manages to get her with a jawbreaker which has no effect on the zombie woman. Abadon then chops Vixen across the jaw which leaves her recoiling in pain. Vertvixen manages to elbow her in the face but Abadon grabs her and hits her with multiple knee strikes. Vertvixen manages to get her opponent in a Sunset Flip, but she gets kicked in the face, breaking the pin.

Abadon grabs both Vertvixen's and stomps down on her chest. She tries to whip Vixen into the ropes, but she stops herself and fires back with a boot to the face. Both women run into each other and Abadon catches Vixen and slams her down. She then grabs her and starts slamming the bad of her head into the mat. The ref breaks it up and Abadon focuses her attention on him now.

Abadon walks back to Vertvixen and picks her up for the Cemetery Drive. Poor Vertvixen never stood a chance and loses to a pinfall as Abadon crawls off her and towards the camera.

Match 4- Davienne VS Tay Conti (with Anna Jay and -1)

Tay Conti shows up with Anna Jay, -1 and the Dark Order. As they leave, Tay quickly delivers a kick to Davienne's face, making her spin. Tay makes her fall facefirst, and climbs on her getting her into a bodyscissors. While still locked in this pose, Tay leans back in a bridge pose, putting all the pressure on Davienne's neck. Davienne quickly pulls her into a pin but Tay slips out of it.

Tay uses her legs to throw Davienne and then goes for a knee-bar. Davienne tries to swing at her, but Tay isn't letting go. She manages to crawl over to the ropes to break the hold. Davienne finally lands a kick on Tay and slams her back against the mat. She bounces off the ropes and runs into Tay with an elbow to the face. She goes for the pin but Conti kicks out.

Davienne starts monologue and Conti taps her shoulder. Davienne kicks at her, but Conti catches her leg and hits her with a high knee to the face. Tay does several arm drags until Davienne rolls out of the ring to regroup. Tay follows her out and as Davienne gets back into the ring, she grabs her leg and ties it into the ropes. Tay uses the ropes to deal some damage and gets back into the ring, knocking her down with several shoulder tackles.

Tay Conti pushes Davienne up against the ropes and runs at her with a high knee to the face. Davienne shoves Conti towards but the ropes, but she jumps onto them instead. Conti leaps off the ropes as her opponent runs into them. As the turns to face her, Conti lays her down with another kick to the face. Tay wraps a leg around Davienne's neck and uses it as a submission hold. Davienne taps out and Tay Conti won the match.

Match 5- Red Velvet VS Madi Wrenkowski

Both women lock up and push each other back. Wrenkowski manages to knock Red down with a shoulder tackle and starts mocking her. As both women run towards each other, Red knocks her down with a leg lariat. With Madi up against the ropes, Velvet starts punching and kicking her down. She presses her foot against Madi's neck while doing her 'pot-stirring' hand gesture. After the ref separates them, Madi manages to trip Velvet facefirst into the turnbuckle. Madi pulls her to the center of the ring to pin her, but she kicks out.

Madi picks up Velvet and slams her into a backbreaker and tries another pin. After several pin attempts from both women, Red Velvet is whipped back up against the ropes and Madi runs into her. Madi hits her with a flying crossbody and kicks her across the back. Velvet finally manages to grab her and trip her facefirst into the mat. Red Velvet runs at Madi, knocking her down with some clotheslines. She dodges a swing from Madi and hits her with some punches and kicks, ending with a hard kick across the face.

Velvet runs into Madi and is caught, but she still slams her down with a variation of a bulldog. Red Velvet 'stirs the pot' and does a Moonsault on her. She goes for a pin but Madi kicks out. Madi crawls over to the ropes for a breather and Velvet runs at her with double-knee to the back of the head. Red Velvet runs at her again and hits her with a boot to the side of head. She goes for the pin and wins the match, defeating Madi Wrenkowski.

-1 joked that he'd like Red Velvet in the Dark Order but Anna Jay might not like it.

Match 6- Jazmin Allure VS Ivelisse (with Diamante)

Ivelisse starts smacking and kicking Jazmin around from the start. Jazmin bounces off the ropes and knocks Ivelisse to her knees with a dropkick. Ivelisse follows her and rams her shoulder into Jazmin's midsection, bending her in half on the ropes. Ivelisse grabs her and slams with a shoulder suplex, but couldn't get the pin. She then starts slamming the back of Jazmin's head against the mat and also gives her a swift kick as the ref pulls her back. Diamante clocks her with a shot of her own while Ivelisse distracts the ref.

Ivelisse stomps down on Jazmin's neck, leaving her choking. Ivelisse kicks her around some more and then grabs her in a submission hold. Jazmin gets up and delivers some chops to the ribs and Ivelisse angrily punches her on the back, sending her back down. She kicks her across the back, keeping Jazmin down. Ivelisse goes for a high bridge suplex, but Jazmin escapes the pin.

Ivelisse grabs her in the same submission hold again but this time Jazmin socks her in the ribs and executes a jawbreaker on her. This finally gets her away from Jazmin, and she takes advantage to hit her with a running shoulder and then lay out with shots all over her. Ivelisse pushes her away but Jazmin runs and grabs her in a variation of a face buster going into a pin. Ivelisse kicks out.

Jazmin blocks a few shots from her opponent, giving her some of her own until Ivelisse slams her knee into her face. As Jazmin is still dazed, Ivelisse clocks her with a tornado kick to the face. She gets the pin and wins the match.

My Opinions-

The Shanna match looked like a cakewalk until KiLynn got some vicious shots in. Shanna didn't have much time for DBZ poses as she had her hands full. It was a pretty decent match, I loved the headstomp spot in the end the Tiger Suplex was flawless.

As for the Baker match, ouch man. I'm glad that was just kayfabe cause Brooke did a good and painful-looking job selling both the curb stomp and the lock jaw submission. She did get some good offense in and the flying headscissors was awesome. I just wonder how she felt having her first match be against such a cocky heel like Brit Baker. Baker really sells the arrogant heel role well and Reba has changed from someone mildly annoyed by her to her personal cheerleader.

The Abadon match was pretty much all her, with Vertvixen getting in at least some defense. I noticed her outfit had a bit of an Iron Man vibe, but that didn't save her from the Living Dead Girl. So far her only two losses have been against the current champ Hikaru Shida, which still makes her very dangerous to anyone else she faces in Dark.

The Tay Conti match was fast paced and she is always very impressive to watch. Tay just has such a delightful combination of deadly kicks but all sorts of grapples and submissions. This time she really outdid herself with all of these crazy submission holds she did, even ending the match with one wrapping her leg around Davienne's neck.

The match between Red Velvet and Madi Wrenkowski was pretty fun and fast paced. It was also extra entertaining due to -1's commentary and the 5 dollar bet that Velvet would win.

As for the Ivelisee match, damn, Ivelisse don't play. She wasted no time literally kicking her opponent all over the place. I did like Jazmin's facebuster pin but there are only so many kicks to the face she can take before she's down and out.

Pretty good matches all around, probably my favorite one was the Tay Conti match because she's just so much fun to watch. I do have to say, I wonder how it feels for the two newcomers Brooke and Davienne to have to start their matches against two very cocky opponents like Baker and Conti. I think Conti is a face, but she still does act very cocky and sure of herself. Still, I guess at least Davienne didn't have to eat a curb stomp. Ouch.

Shanna is set up to face Britt Baker on Dynamite, I wonder how that went.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
