This year we hit several comic shops for Trick or Read, which is pretty much Free Comic Book Day Halloween Edition. The other shops were more like hobby stores with large comic book collections, so they weren't the type to go every week for your fix. While we didn't have time to check out Alpha Comics, Stories didn't do Trick or Read due to lack of customer interest last year. Let's see what we got.
The Author Immortal- The premise sounded interesting regarding an author that literally gets into their work. We got this one at Stories and it grabbed Wendy's interest.
IDW TMNT # 12- The final issue of the Jason Aaron run. What awaits the Turtles after this as someone new takes over as the lead writer?
Thundercats # 19- I really need to sit down and read these someday.
X-Men 97 # 1- A Trick or Read reprint. They actually had a comic based on 'what if the 90's X-Men cartoon continues' way before the reboot show on the Disney channel.
Venom Lethal Protector # 1- Another Trick or Read reprint. I actually owned the original (as in the whole 6 issues) back when it was first released, but lost it over the years. I guess this was a chance to get it back.
Nocturnals The Sinister Path # 1- Seems to be a Trick or Read reprint of a 4-part story. Seeing that it had a creepy vibe and Dark Horse was the publisher, Wendy picked it up.
Masters of the Universe (DC) # 2- Way back in 1982, there was a 3-issue mini-series based on the cartoon and toyline (though I think more on the toyline). I was able to find part 2 at the Cerebral Vortex hobby shop for a decent price. I'll try to track down the other two for the full story.
Masters of the Universe (Star/Marvel) # 3- Prince Adam got captured in the Slime Pit, the Horde's latest torture device. This was more of an on-going series released in 1986, which around the time the Horde was introduced as the new villains. Star Comics was a more kid-friendly part of Marvel that stopped using in the late 80's. Also found at the Cerebal Vortex at a decent price.
Street Fighter II (Tokuma Comics)- Before we had Udon, Tokuma has an 8-issue manga run with their take on Street Fighter. Way better received than the Malibu comics, they were translated into English and eventually brought here. I wonder how they did the story since this was still done early on, pre-New Challengers. We were able to grab all 8 issues at the Cerebral Vortex.
While not a comic, we did find this awesome looking goblet over at 2nd and Charles. We didn't pick up actual comics over there, just a few manga volumes. The goblet was too cool to resist and Halloween is just around the corner.
We'll see what happens next year. I don't think the same people that run Free Comic Book Day also ran Halloween Comicfest or Trick or Read. Otherwise they could have just called this Free Comic Book Day 2 or Free Comic Book Day Halloween Edition. I mean, comic book fans mark their calendars for Free Comic Book Day. Nobody really remembers the Halloween versions. I mean, while Marvel, IDW and Dark Horse (as well as some others) have released these free books year after year, DC has shown no interest in taking part.
