The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog- (Chaos Emeralds Saga 2) Hedgehog of the 'Hound' Table

 By Mark Rodriguez

Robotnik has forced a scientist to make his own time machine, which he intends to use to gather all 4 Chaos Emeralds, all of them with their own powers. Sonic and Tails went back to the days of the pirates and stopped Robotnik from acquiring the Chaos Emerald of Invisibility... but he won't stop there.

The episode opens with Robotnik's time machine making its next stop and spinning the bad guys off it. The Badniks complain, but Robotnik reminds them that they have 3 more emeralds left to go (didn't Sonic take the first one last time?).

Robotnik uses the tree to throw him across the land, as Scratch and Grounder try to catch up on foot. Robotnik lands near a cave that he calls the secret lair or Merlynx the Magician. Inside the magician works on a spell to make him more fit, and he turns himself into an exercise machine (years before those were invented). Robotnik tells the Badniks to whip up a spell to turn him back to normal (he trusts THOSE TWO with magic potions and stuff???). Grounder finds a magic wand and accidentally turns him and Scratch into the toppers of a wedding cake. Robotnik snatches the wand and they all turn into sports trophies. He then turns them back to normal and is able to turn Merlynx back to normal too.

Robotnik threatens the wizard and he hands over the Chaos Emerald of Invincibility. Robotnik has his robots blast him with their ray guns to test it out.. and he eventually gets fried anyway. Merlynz explains just holding the emerald is half the spell, for it to work completely, he has to become king of the hound table. Robotnik says it won't be that hard since he'll have the wizard helping him.

Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails are having fun at the beach, and our hedgehog hero is hitting on a beach babe, when Canine-stein interrupts him again. Geez, I don't remember Sonic being such a ladies man. The scientist tells Sonic what Robotnik is up to, and Sonic isn't up to it... until he finds out that the girl he's snuggling is an octopus. He grabs Tails and they both speed off to travel through time with the help of his time travel boots.

Sonic and Tails arrive on the castle grounds and see a princess running. She tells them that the castle is under attack and she's checking on her father, King Arthur. Tails read the books and asks him where the knights of the hound table are, and the king tells them they're fighting the bloated knight. Sonic and Tails head off to investigate.

Through the window they can see the Bloated Knight, who is obviously Robotnik, defeating all the knights. The princess tells them of the legend of the Holy Hedgehog that will one day appear and save them. Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder (who are actually competent right now) easily defeat all of the king's knights.

Robotnik climbs a ladder to get into the castle, and sees Sonic, who quickly cuts the ladder in half. Robotnik falls all the way down, and sends his robots after him. Scratch sneaks behind Sonic with an axe, but Tails drops a huge vat of boiling oatmeal on him (...wut?). Getting burned, Scratch runs into the river and gets eaten by a gator. Grounder readies a catapult and looks for rocks to load it with. Sonic ties Robotnik up into a ball, and Grounder confuses him for a rock and launches him right into a wall (that Sonic drew a big target on).

Robotnik calls out for Merlynx and they make him use his magic on Sonic. He zaps the hedgehog's shoes, turning them to stone. Sonic is unable to move, and Tails can't get them off him either. Robotnik climbs the ladder and gets the king's crown. Now as king, he can use the emerald to make him invincible, and gets a more muscular appearance. Robotnik's first royal command is to lock Sonic and Tails in the dungeon, and with his stone shoes, the hedgehog won't be able to do much of anything.

The princess gives Sonic and Tails some chili dogs, and tells them to look for Merlynx. Tails tries to eat one of them and nearly breaks his teeth since the chili dogs have files hidden inside them.

Robotnik flaunts his new powers by having Scratch fire a cannonball at him, and Grounder drop a giant steel weight on him... both not causing him any harm, though harm falls upon the Badniks. He goes to humiliate Sonic but sees that the hedgehog has escaped. He angrily sends the robots after him.

Sonic and Tails are headed for Merlynx's cave, but to a very slow pace due to Sonic's stone shoes. Scratch and Grounder soon find them and get ready to attack. Sonic stomps on Scratch's foot and kicks Grounder extra hard due to the stone boots. Sonic grabs a hose from Scratch's chest compartment and spills oil all over the hill. Tail pushes Sonic so he can slide downhill and into Merlynx's cave.

Merlynx is once again trying to become super fit with another spell... and turns himself into a giant cheese. Sonic eats some of it (......the hell?) and says it tastes and smells horrible and then turns the wizard back to normal. Merlynx (who is somehow NOT missing a piece of himself now) says he hasn't been able to perfect that spell in 40 years. Merlynx changes Sonic's shoes back to normal. They later issue a challenge to Robotnik (a note left on his door), and he accepts.

Later on we see a jousting event between Robotnik the Invincible and the Holy Hedgehog.... with these weird stuffed horses. The joust begins, and Sonic's lance breaks apart, unable to actually hurt Robotnik, and he easily shoves the hedgehog off his um... horse. Sonic then uses his spin dash to slice Robotnik's spear in half. Sonic taunts Robotnik for no longer having a lance, but he pulls out a ray gun and blasts Sonic away. Sonic he can't touch Robotnik as long as he has that Chaos Emerald. Tails says he should try to tie him up for a bit, long enough for him to find where he's hiding it.

Robotnik charges at Sonic, and the hedgehog... plants a seed and waters it and it grows into a big cactus. Robotnik crashes into the cactus and his helmet flies off. Tails catches it and removes the emerald, then puts the helmet back on his head. Robotnik gloats that he's invincible again, but Sonic stomps all over his head, then shreds his armor to pieces, leaving him in his boxers. Tails tells Robotnik he has the emerald now, and Scratch and Grounder try to grab him. Tails turns super muscular and easily smashes them into pieces. Somehow this works despite Tails not being king.

Robotnik snatches Merlynx' wand and turns some normal citizens into giant knights, and sends them after Sonic. Tails tosses the emerald at the hedgehog. Sonic spin dashes into the knights and turns them back to normal, and then smashes into Robotnik, sending him into the river. He gets chased by the same gator from before.

Later on Sonic gets knighted as 'Sir Sonic the Speedy' and the king will be keeping the emerald. Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder are boarded up on their time machine and Sonic says he's gonna send them off to a long vacation. Sonic and Tails speed away back to present day. The bad guys arrive in an ancient coliseum where they get attacked by a lion. Robotnik yells that he hates the hedgehog.

Sonic Says

Sonic reminds kids that if you go swimming, wether at a beach or at a pool, always bring a buddy along in case something happens. I have to say, this is very true. I mean, I appreciate the tips where they tell people not to litter or not to leave all the lights on when you leave the house to save some electricity (I'm looking at you Turtle Tips), but stuff like swimming with a friend or lifeguard around is actual life-saving stuff. Like Sonic says, if anything were to happen to you, there wouldn't be anyone around to help you, and yes you can drown in a pool just as easy as you can in the beach. So way to go guys.

My Opinions

A decent episode. I have to say my favorite part is Robotnik making Merlynx turn Sonic's shoes into stone. It only makes sense, take the speed away from Sonic and you got rid of your biggest obstacle. Robotnik got to win for a while and enjoy his power. Even when Sonic could still outsmart Scratch and Grounder, he still couldn't do much until he got his shoes turned back to normal. No real complaints here. Even the jousting match between Robotnik and Sonic was kinda cool.

I am surprised they called Sonic the Holy Hedgehog. Not sure exactly what holy thing they're referencing. Yeah, I know cartoons would still say stuff like holy moly and holy smokes, but I think this is one of the rare times they called a person (or hedgehog) holy. Also whoa-ho with Sonic trying to get some action on the beach. He invites himself to bury himself in the sand next to the lady, then he says 'why don't you and I....?' before he gets cut off by Mr. Cockblock. Nice to know Sonic thinks about more than just beating up bad guys and eating chili dogs all day. Anyways, good episode.

Over-analyzing a kid's cartoon

Not much to say here. I guess we can overlook the weird stuffed horses thing cause hey, if Sonic and Robotnik wanna run around pretending to on horses, more power to them. The real question lies with Merlynx and trying to turn himself young, strong and fit. Who helps him change back to normal whenever his plans backfire? He's turned himself into an exercise machine and a giant piece of cheese and both times it seems he'd be stuck as an inanimate object if it weren't for Robotnik and Sonic turning him back to normal. He lives alone in a cave, who's there to help him out? Was he trapped as an alarm clock or something for 10 years until some random person dropped by to visit and turn him back to normal? Maybe he should follow the buddy system whenever trying out magic spells on himself.

And also, Sonic ATE some of the Merlynx cheese? Cannibal. Anyway we'll see what more random hi-jinx and tomfoolery await in the next episode.

Not the last time Sonic would deal with knights and swords though.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
