IDW TMNT # 25 City Fall Part 4

By Mark Rodriguez

The Shredder's minions captured Leonardo and had him get brainwashed into being a member of the Foot. Splinter and the rest attempt to rescue him but are surprised by the new evil Leo and are forced to escape.

A LOT happens in this issue. Lots of characters have their moments in this issue and some classic old favorites are finally coming back in a more modern and realistic setting. Let's not waste any more time and get to it!

City Fall Part 4 opens with Karai and the Foot loading up a stolen shipment of goods, when suddenly they are attacked by the Savate Ninjas. Karai attacks several of them but the Foot Ninja are seriously outnumbered. Suddenly Dark Leo and even more Foot show up to even out the odds. Karai is ready to kill their leader, but Leo stops her and says they need him alive to deliver's Shredder's message. Either they obey the Shredder, or they should prepare for all-out war.

Meanwhile, Don and Mike update Casey on what's going using Skype (or some similar kind of computer video program). Don says Raph took Leo's treachery the hardest and went off on his own, while Splinter is off on some urgent mission with Hob and Slash.

Casey feels bad being stuck in the hospital bed, unable to help find Raph or Leo. April says she knows how he feels since she was also afraid she lost him when Shredder stabbed him. Casey says he isn't going anywhere, and they kiss.

Elsewhere, Raph is in some dark alley attacking a local bum for into on the Foot. Another guy attacks Raph, but he easily takes him down. The bum tries to smack Raph but is easily defeated. Raph recognizes these guys from a stolen briefcase incident involving the Savate (from the TMNT annual story) and wants to know where to find the Foot. The guys Raph is questioning say they're just the little guys in the organization, and he can show him where to find the bigger guys that might know about what the Foot is up to.

Speaking of which, the Savate leader, Victor is finishing off a fight against the Foot. A guy named Antonio shows up and tells him the others are arranging a meeting he should be a part of it. At the meeting, Antonio is worried about Victor's violent methods since he gained leadership of the Savate and started provoking a war with the Foot. They say their old leader Fabrice would have talked it out with Shredder as business men and not start a war. Victor kills Antonio with a knife to the throat and says he is not Fabrice and their ways of conducting business have changed. It is time to decide whether they will be predators or prey.

At the Foot hideout, Shredder wants Leo to update him on recent events. Karai feels she is more important than to be used as bait on a secret mission. Shredder says it was Leo that decided they use Karai that way. Karai is surprised and enraged, and Leo says he thought using her was perfect bait since he figured the Savate would consider her a weak point.

Karai asks if Leo also serves the Foot since he has yet to use his blades to kill. Shredder silences her and she leaves angrily. Leo also asks to be dismissed and for a split second sees Shredder and Kitsune pose similar to a flashback he has of Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen, his parents from his previous life.

As Leo leaves, Shredder tells Kitsune he ordered Leo to hold back from lethal force as she advised, and asks how must longer must he keep Leo from killing. Kitsune says Leo might be under her control but he is still strongly connected to his past life. As long as Leo's family lives, they still pose a threat to her control over him. One of the Foot arrives and gives Shredder a package. The box has a severed hand (I assume from an unlucky Foot Ninja) with a note that says 'WAR' on it. Shredder tells Kitsune that her time is running out.

Elsewhere, Casey's dad remembered the cruel words Angel said about him that he managed to overhear when he tried to visit his son at the hospital. In a fit of rage, he rips his shirt off telling out 'NO MORE!!!' revealing a Purple Dragon tattoo across his back.
Splinter meets up with Hob and says that he might need his resources to rescue Leo from the Foot. Hob says that maybe Leo likes working for them, which angers Splinter. Hob says he was just kidding and Splinter says he will join him if he manages to help get Leo back. Hob agrees but wants to send Splinter on a mission first to prove he's telling the truth.

Meanwhile, Raph finds some corrupt cops (also from the TMNT annual) talking about how dangerous it is for them to be double-dealing with the Savate and the Foot. Raph threatens one of the cops with his sai on more information about the Foot. Don and Mike show up, allowing the cops to escape. Raph says they were just about to talk, and Don says he was threatening a cop and is out of control. Raph is about to start a fight with Don, when Mikey suddenly shoves Raph back and calls him out on how he's just running around causing trouble. He's tried of the fighting among themselves and flat out asks Raph what his problem is.

Raph apologizes and blames himself for everything that happened, with Casey being kidnapped and Leo being captured. He feels the family is finally together (Raph was missing for a year when this series began) and due to his temper, they're broken again. Don admits that back when Raph was missing, Mikey and him were ready to give it up since it was starting to seem hopeless, but Leo would never give up the search. Now they're gonna team up as a family and work on getting Leo back. Mikey asks where they should start and Raph says Leo would say they need a plan.

Shredder, Leo, Karai and Alopex prepare to launch an attack on the Savate, right where they live. Shredder and Leo will strike first, and then Karai and Alopex will strike second to wipe out any survivors. As Shredder and Leo leave, Alopex tells Karai that she feels it's wrong that she is shoved to second place compared to Leo, considering all she did for the Foot. Karai says they all serve the Foot no matter how important their role, and can't forget that they can be replaced. Karai then mentions that a wise warrior always has an alternate plan prepared, just in case. Elsewhere, some street thugs are being mutated into a very familiar rhino and warthog.

I love the crazy amount of detail as the human Bebop and Rocksteady are slowly turning into mutant animals. It's funny how we see their mutation scene recreated in the Nick show and Out of the Shadows, but in the original 80's cartoon it all took place off screen

My Opinions

Like I said, a LOT happened in this issue. More Dark Leo. Victor and the Savate officially declaring war (as well as actually doing something...). April and Casey kiss. Casey's dad mysterious Purple Dragon tattoo. Splinter on a mission with Hob. And two major points I want to address.

First off, wow to Mikey snapping at Raph. Mikey is sometimes the voice of reason in other forms of media, but he usually keeps his composure, tries to make his brothers talk it out or change the serious mood in the room. While Mikey did that before during the 'Change is Constant' when Leo and Don were about to throw down, this time he snaps and yells at Raph to stop running around like an idiot and calm the hell down. he outright says 'Damn dude, what's your problem?' and Raph, in surprise, realizes his brother is right and calms down. He had a valid reason to be upset too. It is a shame that after a year of being missing, the turtles are back together again and now, after a handful of adventures, another one is missing. And as for Don, he was the hothead in Raph's absence, it's nice to see him throw some of that anger back at him. This issue really shows how hard the turtles are dealing with their brother betraying them as well as Casey almost dying, and it just goes to show, it got so serious, even the most happy-go-lucky turtle had to snap.

And my other point. Holy crap. Bebop and Rocksteady! Everyone's favorite bumbling mutant duo will finally make a comeback in a more serious and modern era. For those that don't know, when this series began, IDW also released micros of the Turtles, just like Mirage did back then. The Raphael micro introduced Alopex, but also two human thugs that looked an awful lot like the pre-mutated versions of Bebop and Rocksteady in the old show. At the end of the issue, they were more than eager to be mutated and they were told it would happen 'when the master allows it'. From then on, we have not seen or heard anything from them and it got to the point that many just accepted them being sort of an Easter egg in that issue. Now they're finally coming back....though I wonder how it will work.

The first season.... where Bebop and Rocksteady were kinda dumb, but still very strong and bad-ass. This was before they decided to take away Rocksteady's hat, give him a whinier voice and a pot belly

I wonder how they're gonna fare in a fight against the turtles, where they risk getting stabbed and sliced up. Plus are we gonna see Rocksteady punch a Turtle into a wall, or Bebop get lucky and shoot a Turtle in the arm or something? We'll have to wait and see just how intense the fights will get with these guys.

Another main thing to point out is that it seems this time Bebop and Rocksteady will be working for Karai, and not for the Shredder, since she mutated them behind his back. How will he react when he finds out?

As for Casey's dad..... well, we'll soon find out what other popular character from the past he'll become, though the tattoo is a hell of a hint.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
