Avengers- Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2018) # 2

By Mark Rodriguez

Back to the age of the beginning of man, the original Black Panther, Sorcerer Supreme, Iron First, Phoenix and Odin defeated a Celestial. The giants are returning in modern day, and as Captain America, Iron Man and Thor get ready to face them, Captain Marvel tells them that the giants they were supposed to fight are dropping dead all over the world. This is when The Final Host arrives, which are even more powerful and dangerous than the Celestials that the Avengers were supposed to fight. All this while Doctor Strange and Black Panther discover hordes of killer insects breaking through the attack people on the surface. What will happen now?

The story starts with what I can assume is Loki narrating about how easy it is to wave danger in front of the heroes to get them to jump back into action again. He comments that besides the big three, he knows Strange and T'Challa are underground and Carol is in the sky. He realizes that Ghost Rider was a fun surprise.

Ghost Rider attacks the insects blaming his cursed car for this. Gabe yells from his apartment window that the news is talking about giants falling out of the sky. Robbie tells him to stay inside while he figures everything out. Since Robbie is Ghost Rider now, Gabe asks what's wrong with his voice, and he tells him to not worry about it. Robbie hops into his demon possessed car and drives off the investigate.

Jennifer Walter, She-Hulk, finds one of the giants, fallen in front of her. Despite not wishing to get involved she can't help but get closer to check it out. Just then the insect monsters crawl out from behind it. Jessica tries to contain herself, but loses control and turns into the Savage She-Hulk.

As She-Hulk attacks the insects, Tony, Steve and Thor try to attack the Dark Celestials. Iron Man can't scan any kind of weakness, and Thor flies in to try to hits its face, and is sent flying back down. Iron Man can't get a read on them, he says he detects thousands of different live forms within that thing.

She-Hulk destroys the bugs but notices that the fallen Celestial in front of her is not dead. She can still hear a voice inside her head but she can't understand. She is suddenly warped away. Ghost Rider is wondering why his car isn't talking to him, especially now with giant insects and giants falling from the sky. Just then, She-Hulk is warped in front of him.

Iron Man fires his repulsor rays at full blast to not effect. Captain America suggests getting them into orbit and blasting them with every missile on the planet. Iron Man suggests they need someone to communicate with them like Jean Grey or The Eternals. Captain Marvel rescues Thor and Iron Man asks what is Alpha Flight doing to help out. Carol says she's dealt with Celestials before and has Omega Level Warp Grenades to use on them.

She-Hulk smashes the car and Ghost Rider has one of the car's jets blast her face with fire. This only gets her even angrier as she tosses the mangled up demon car aside. Ghost Rider hates his life but goes up against She-Hulk anyway.

Carol plans to warp the giants into the sun. Just then the Dark Celestial blasts the jet that Captain America is in. Thor flies to save him and notices that the same Celestial that Jennifer found earlier has risen up and is fighting back against the Dark Celestial.

She-Hulk clocks Ghost Rider in the jaw, and the demon fries her with his flames and ties her up with his chains. He tells her that he is not her enemy. She-Hulk says he is not the Hulk so he is an enemy. Ghost Rider says they're both not people persons but they both could use a friend. The ground beneath them starts opening up, forming a caved in circle, as more of the giant insects surround them.

Captain America tells Carol to forget about him and just toss the Warp Grenades already. Carol, Thor and Iron Man are all blasts by the Celestials. Loki arrives and tells them that he is helping the Final Host avenge the greatest wrong of all time and correct the mistake made millions of years ago. He will help the Final Host cause global extinction! Just then the Final Host tears the Celestial's head off.

My Opinions

Wow. I literally have no idea how the heroes are going to do anything to stop this. The Final Host was completely untouched and the Avengers were just gnats to them. I'm wondering how they're gonna save the world this time.

Loki's narration was interesting, and I know the last page was supposed to be a surprise reveal, but given that the Free Comic Book Day issue explained he caused this, the narration could only be from him. I like how he asks what Avengers even mean and what exactly are they avenging, while he's been avenging himself his entire life. And yeah, just like the movies, Loki's interference of trying to get the Hulk to attack Thor was what originally formed the Avengers.

This is my first time reading about the new Savage She-Hulk and seeing that she's basically been reduced to a blindly violent barely-able-to-communicate brute, just like her cousin Bruce. It's weird seeing the usual fun and vibrant lawyer turned to this. I assume the upcoming fight against the insects alongside Ghost Rider will get her to be on his side. I am entertained by Ghost Rider's internal dialogue, his powers truly are a curse. I like how he complains about his life with his demonic car when suddenly She-Hulk is warped in front of him, directing her anger at him, and he's like 'yeah, sure... why not?' When he's facing herself, he tells himself "quick, saying something quippy so you don't seem afraid". He is far from being the scary demon of repentance that Johnny Blaze was and I find it entertaining. And damn, he must be strong if he can take a solid punch from an enraged She-Hulk without losing his head.

We didn't see much of Black Panther and Doctor Strange, except a scene here or there to remind us they're still part of the story, but I assume we'll see more of them next issue. I'm loving the story and loving the art.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
