For those that don't know, EVO is an annual fighting game tournament hosting several games, held in Las Vegas during the summer. Lately being featured at Evo has become a make-or-break for a game's popularity. Some examples were Capcom rushing Street Fighter 5 out in a bare-bones state just so it would be available in time for that year's EVO, or Marvel VS Capcom Infinite getting the snub by the fans as EVO excluded it from the line-up (and also cause the game was downgrade from MVC3).
Aside from the gaming, the show also has trailers of upcoming games or new DLC characters for existing games. This time around we got DLC reveals for new characters being added to Guilty Gear Strive (Robo-Ky) and Tekken 8 (Bob), and Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star finally became available for Fatal Fury City of the Wolves right after the Finals for that game ended. The most surprising thing this time around were trailers for new DLC characters.... being added to old games that were, as far as online support does, completely done. Here are the three games that got new stuff added, even though the third one is technically a 'new' game.
BlazBlue Central Fiction- Trinity Glassfile
This was very surprising since not only did BlazBlue Central Fiction comes out back in 2015, it had a whole other game (Cross Tag Battle) came after it. Trinity has appeared in some visual novel spin offs (BlazBlue Dark War) and I believe this will be her first traditional appearance as an actual selectable character in the main series. The game itself is currently on sale til July 2nd on the PSN store.
The King of Fighters XV- update/balance patch?
SNK released a trailer announcing that KOF 15 will be getting 'updates' on July 2nd. The game came out back in 2022, and their final DLC was Vice and Mature released together on December 12, 2024. No one was expecting any sort of update for this one, though it's mostly likely going to be just a balance patch. I was hoping for the promise of actual new teams. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the USA Sports Team (Heavy D, Lucky Glauber and Brian Battler) and the Anti-Kyokugenryu Team (Eiji, Kasumi and Malin), but that might be too wishful thinking. IF new teams are announced, I might do a follow-up article.
Art of Fighting 3 Re-Ignited
While technically speaking this is a new game, it's still a port of a game from 1996 with actual new characters added. SNK is re-releasing their older games on Steam under the Neo-Geo Premium label. The games, like Ninja Masters and Real Bout Fatal Fury have added bonuses like cleaned up visuals, updated menus, online play with rollback and any previous hidden bosses being playable. However, with Art of Fighting 3 they threw in two new characters that were never in the original game, King and Yuri!!
For those that remember, Art of Fighting 3 dealt with Robert going to Mexico to help a friend, which is why, other than Ryo, the game had a whole new cast. Technically speaking Yuri was in the game, accompanying Robert during his cut-scenes, but she wasn't a selectable character until now. I'm hoping Yuri and King have their own story modes and endings. I'm guessing King joined Ryo on his trip to follow Robert?
The only downside, for me anyways, is that this will only be available on Steam. I wish this was also available on the PSN store since it would be a day-one buy for me.
So those were the most surprising reveals this year, with three games getting something new after so many years. I wonder if this will start some new trend? Will we see Juri somehow added to SF III Third Strike? I'll be curious to find out.
On similar news, earlier this year Dragonball FighterZ did a similar thing. The game was released way back in 2018, with the last DLC character Labcoat Android 21 coming out in February 2022. They just released the Daima version of Super Saiyan 4 Goku this past April. It's especially surprising since FighterZ came out when Super was still new-ish and Daima didn't even exist yet.
