Spider-Men # 1

 By Mark Rodriguez

Back before all the Spider-Verse and MCU Multiverse stuff, we had the regular Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe. The Ultimate Universe was meant to be a modern re-telling of the Marvel Universe for new readers that didn't want to be bogged down by decades of continuity. In the Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker was Spider-Man for a few years until he tragically died. After this, Miles Morales took over as the new Spider-Man. While currently Miles exists in the 616 universe alongside Peter, this was the first time the two got to meet.

Spider-Men # 1 starts off with Spider-Man (Peter Parker) swinging around the city at night, monologing about awesome New York City is. He stops a couple of car thieves, and as usual, the cops try to arrest him.

Pete sees a strange purple light coming out from an abandoned warehouse and decided to check it out. He finds this strange energy spiral which seems to show another world coming from sort of device from the ground. Spidey doesn’t know what to make of it and looks around.

As he does, he finds some familiar technology and a fishbowl helmet. He recognizes it as part of Mysterio’s costume, and sure enough the villain appears to attack him. Spider-Man pins him down while Mysterio seems very surprised to see him for some reason.

The fight continues and Spider-man whips out a classic Scorpion attack. He shoots a web at him, yanks him towards him and punches him hard.

Mysterio claims Spidey doesn’t know what he’s dealing with. He also says he ‘missed seeing Spider-Man die the first time, but he won’t this time’.  Spider-Man thinks he’s crazy and tells him that whatever the weird glowing thing is, he can call up Tony Stark or Reed Richards to shut it down. As Spider-Man is distracted, Mysterio grabs his gun and tries to shoot Spider-Man. He misses and hits the glowing device instead. The purple energy becomes some sort of spiral vortex and sucks Spider-Man inside.

Spider-Man now finds himself outside and in the day time, when it was night time before. He notices that he’s not in the same New York he was before and figures it was one of Mysterio’s illusions or tricks. However, the villain never laid a hand on him, so he realizes it was the purple energy. He leaps back inside what he believes to be the warehouse from before and find it to be some woman’s apartment. The hero quickly swings back out and tries to find out what’s going on. Before he can however, he finds some punks about to beat up in a guy. Spider-Man quickly leaps in and saves the day.

Spider-Man asks if the guy is OK. The guy thanks him but says wearing that costume is in terrible taste. Spider-Man is confused. The man says he appreciates the help and the city needs more heroes, but he should get his own costume, and not use the one Peter Parker used to wear. Our hero is confused and the man says ‘’you’re gonna tell me you dressed like that and you don’t know who Peter Parker is?” This leaves Spider-Man confused as the man thanks him and leaves.

Slightly freaking out now, Spidey swings off eager to find answers now…. And a black blur speeds by him. Spider-Man is surprised to be suddenly face to face with… the Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales!

My Thoughts-

I love this issue. I just loved it. It’s the perfect jumping point for anyone that has ever heard about Spider-Man and decided to actually pick up a comic. It has Peter doing his usual wisecracking crimefighting, a classic villain like Mysterio, and the ending cliffhanger is perfect. The art is also fantastic. I find a lot of these mini-series and specials always bring their A-Game when it comes to the art when compared to the monthly on-goings.

Even though it would have interesting to see Peter meet Ultimate Peter, I just find it way more interesting and ten times more awesome for him to run into Miles instead. It would also be cool to see how he reacts to seeing an alternate version of the original. And there’s the fact that the Ultimate Marvel Universe knows Peter is dead, so when news of the ‘original Spider-Man is swinging around’ pops up, it’s also gonna be awesome. I am so pumped to see issue 2!!!

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
