Batman and the Outsiders # 3 (2019)

By Mark Rodriguez

Batman formed a new group of Outsiders consisting of Katana, Orphan, and the Signal led by Black Lightning. Their mission was to rescue a young woman named Sofia with super powers who is being targeted by Rah's Al Ghul. After a battle against the latest member of the League of Assassins, Ishmael, the Outsiders and a friend of Batman named Kaliber were defeated and Sofia was captured. Sofia awakens in front of Rah's Al Ghul who offers to train her.

Lesser Gods Part 3 opens with Batman on a rooftop talking to his team. Their main concern is not failing, but rescuing Sofia. He says Black Lightning will lead them against an enemy that will test them. The enemy is Batman, he says he will meet them in the Waterways in 3 hours.

Sofia sees herself falling into the mouth of a red dragon as a giant sized Rah's Al Ghul watches on. Sofia tells that she hates him. Rah's tell her that he protected her and stopped Ishamel fro killing her. He said her father could have embraced his powers to protect her but failed. He summons Ishmael before her and tells her to kill him. Sofia is confused and Ishmael yells that she is nothing, right in her face.

The Outsiders are by the Waterways and plan to split up to find Batman. Batman liked to hunt, so Black Lightning will bait him. Suddenly blows the bridge they are on and Signal loses sight of the others. A smoke pellet lands by his feet and Duke tells Batman he can see through smoke. However, the young hero sees someone else.

Ishmael kneels, allowing Sofia to kill him, but she won't do it. Ishmael offers to tell her how he felt when he killed her father. He says he can see people's thoughts before they die and he sees her father wished he had killed her instead. Sofia angrily punches Ishmael across the face as Rah's smiles.

Karma appears before Signal and tells him he makes his team weaker. They fight and Karma throws him against a wall. He tells him Batman must be disappointed in him, which is why he left him to die alone.

Sofia beat the hell out of Ishmael and lays him out. Rah's gives her his sword so that she can now take everything from him. He tells her to not only kill him but to see it as a way of killing the link of her past and her guilt. He says he'll make sure harm never comes to her again.

Karma asks where the others are to save Signal. Just then Orphan and Katana arrive to attack him. Kaliber aims his gun at Karma's head and said they won. Black Lightning tells Signal that he needs to trust him. Karma was Bruce in disguise and he tells him that he's proud of him and know what he's feeling. Cassandra apologizes to Duke, since she was the one that told Batman that he was worried about Karma. Duke hugs Cass and tells her he needs help. Black Lightning says he has them.

As Sofia finally gives in to her anger and swings her sword down, Ishmael stops her and slams her into a wall. Rah's says she is a killer by nature, and he is the only one that will ever accept her. If she dedicates herself to him, death will bow to her, for he has seen the future.

Sometime earlier, a drone that looks like a miniature Legion of Doom headquarters, lands before Rah's Al Ghul. Rah's recognizes this as coming from Luthor. The drone casts an image of Lex Luthor telling him he offers and opportunity to shape the world before it ends. Rah's asks what he could possibly offer him.

My Opinions-

Pretty good story. I understand the importance of Batman having a little test to get his team in line, but Sofia's still in danger right? On one side, they waste more time if they work as a cohesive unit, but on the other side, is there really time for a training exercise?

The art was pretty good, I especially love that first panel with Batman standing before his team. I know Karma was a new bad guy in recent Batman comics and such, I haven't read those yet and was disappointed he basically looked like a Red Hood rip off. For a moment, I thought that was the Red Hood starting trouble for whatever reason. Either way, Duke got his moment, so let's see how he works alongside the team now.

I was surprised to see Kaliber still with them. I hope he sticks around and is actually part of the Outsiders.

I'm not sure why Lex Luthor looks the way he does now, I sort of dropped interest on the Justice League comics after the first Totality story. I was surprised to see him here, and kinda wished this comic stayed mostly within Batman's neck of the woods, but oh well.

I'm curious where this is gonna go since the story now added a larger reason for Rah's wanting Sofia on his side.

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more...

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi...

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for ...
