Dragonball Super manga Volume 5 (Chapter 27)

 By Mark Rodriguez

The epic battle against Zamas has come to an end as Zeno Sama wipes out the entire timeline that was corrupted by him. Now Trunks and Mai will live in a new alternate timeline alongside the Trunks and Mai of that timeline. Life returns to normal, but there is still that matter of that big martial arts tournament that Zeno promised Goku.

Chapter 27- Life, Training and More

The story opens on Earth and everyone goes about their lives, completely unaware of all the trouble Zamas caused in an alternate timeline. Goku sells his crops and gets back into his air truck to drive back home. The villagers see him drive by and comment on how rare it is to see the latest model air truck in their 'backwater town'. Suddenly Goku sees some people with their vehicle overturned and about to fall off the edge of a cliff. He asks if they need help.

The guy asks for a lift to the station and Goku agrees. Two other guys are hiding with guns and they notice the fancy air truck. They step out and tell Goku to leave, while the first guy reveals he's also in on the ruse. Goku says he doesn't think it would be good to take bandits to the station. The guys pull their guns on him and ask for the keys. Goku finally understands that they're trying to steal the truck.

Goku tells them that Bulma gave him the truck so he can work harder, so he can't afford to lose it. One of the guys had enough and takes a swing at Goku. Goku blocks the punch with his finger, then casually flicks his finger to the side and sends the guy flying into his vehicle.

The other guys are shocked, but also angry since the guy Goku sent flying was their boss. They open fire but Goku moves so quickly it looks like the bullets are just going through him. Goku appears behind one of the gunmen and chops him on the back of the head. He then grabs the other guy's gun and crushes it in his hand, tossing it aside. Goku tells the man, whose gun he just destroyed, to go get a job instead of pulling such stunts. Goku then says to himself he's probably not one to talk.

The guy pulls out a second gun he was hiding and shoots Goku. Goku catches all the bullets in his hand. He then opens his hand and lets the bullets fall. The man runs off in fear. Goku comments on how he left his friends behind and notices one of the bullets grazed his arm enough to leave a mark. Goku says he's getting out of shape and needs to train, but Chichi wants him to work.

Goku takes the men to prison and gets a cash reward since they were the most wanted criminals in the area. Goku says with this money, Chichi can allow him to train. Goku pulls out the communicator device used to contact Whis, but there isn't an answer.

On Beerus' planet, Whis' staff is on the side since he is busy training with Vegeta while Beerus is bored. Whis says that Vegeta's moves are getting sharper. Vegeta is about to punch Whis when he suddenly vanishes. Vegeta concentrates on sensing his location. There's suddenly a small ripple on a nearby pool and Vegeta can sense that Whis is about to hit him from behind. Whis suddenly warps in front of Vegeta, and the Saiyan Prince was able to predict this and throw his fist forward. Whis catches his fist and says he's grown as a warrior. Vegeta says he doesn't need his compliments and the fighting continues.

Beerus asks why Vegeta is more intense than usual. The Oracle Fish tells him it's because Goku was stronger than him in the fight against Zamas. Beerus is bored of their rivalry and says he'll go to bed. He tells the Oracle Fish that his prophecy of Goku and Vegeta being his rivals was greatly exaggerated. The Oracle Fish confirms that those two will in fact, be his greatest rivals. Beerus is annoyed and then calls on Vegeta for a match. Vegeta is surprised and Whis tells him to go ahead. Vegeta accepts the challenge.

Vegeta powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and gets ready to fight. Whis asks the Oracle Fish if he said anything to Beerus, and the fish tells him about their recent conversation. Vegeta flies into Beerus with a punch that Beerus catches with his hand, causing a huge impact. Beerus commends the force of the impact but says Super Saiyan Blue is just a powered up Super Saiyan God, so it's not enough to reach his level. He knocks Vegeta back, sending him flying, but the Saiyan flips to his feet and fires off a ki blast.

Beeru knocks the blast away and Vegeta appears behind him. As he swings his fist, Beerus vanishes. Vegeta flies in with several attacks, and Beerus dodges them all. Beerus spins like a top as he flips back to the ground. Vegeta flies in with a punch just as Beerus is about to finish spinning. Beerus smacks Vegeta across the face with his tail, knocking him into the pool. Beerus and Whis think the fight is over, but Vegeta slowly rises from the pool.

Vegeta calms down and focuses and absorbs the Super Saiyan Blue aura within himself. Whis says that's the same form that Goku used. Vegeta says if Kakarot can do it, so can he. Beerus is interested and wants to continue the fight. Beerus flies towards Vegeta and this time, the Saiyan is able to block and dodge all of his strikes. Beerus is impressed but asks how long he will last. Beerus and Vegeta continue to attack each other, each one unable to land a decisive strike.

Whis says Vegeta has mastered the Super Saiyan Blue form, so Goku is no longer above him. The Oracle Fish asks if Beerus is fighting seriously. Whis says Beerus is still playing along, but it's time he got serious. He doesn't want to risk Beerus actually getting hit and losing his temper.

Just then Vegeta finally lands a punch on Beerus' face. Vegeta says he got him. Beerus angrily grabs his wrist and tells him not to get cocky. Whis prepares to create a barrier to protect the planet when he realized he didn't have his scepter with him. There's suddenly an explosion that wrecks a chunk of the planet. Beerus has Vegeta faceplanted in the middle of a huge crater. Beerus says he got cocky when he was going easy him. He gives him points for improving so quickly and he could probably serve as a God of Destruction for another universe.

Vegeta is disappointed that he isn't a match for Beerus at all. Whis says he can see he still thinks before he moves, and he must get to the point where every part of of his body can sense and move on its own. He says not even Beerus has mastered that. Vegeta asks if he masters this, would that mean he can take down any enemy. Whis says 'indeed'.

Vegeta says he's now equal with Kakarot, but they still have a long way to go to reach their full potential. He says he will reach the top first, as he's tired of always being behind him. Whis asks if he should give him a longer training schedule the following day. Vegeta says he'll have to do the next session another time and asks to be taken back to Earth. Whis asks if anything happened. Vegeta said he's be unable to visit them for quite a while.

The Oracle Fish found the scepter and tells Whis that someone has been trying to contact him. Whis sees it's Goku, who is now in Bulma's house. Goku asks Whis if he can train again since he's getting rusty. Whis asks what food he will bring as an offering and Goku says he will bring some daifuku.

Goku asks if he could show up in an hour and he can invite Vegeta. Whis says Vegeta is already with them. Goku is angry that Vegeta is training without him and asks if he can join them. Whis says that Vegeta is leaving and asks why he's leaving. Vegeta says it's almost time for 'it' to be born.

Bulma shows up, along with Trunks and Mai, and she is very pregnant. Goku asks if Bulma's been eating a lot lately. Bulma says she told him she's been expecting another kid. Goku finally figures out that's what Vegeta meant.

An hour later, Whis and Vegeta arrive at Capsule Corp. Goku asks Vegeta why he's leaving. Vegeta says Bulma is about to give birth any day now. Goku doesn't understand why Vegeta can't join him since he's not the one giving birth. Vegeta says Bulma would never forgive him if he was off training when she gave birth. Goku asks why he cares, he wasn't around when Gohan and Goten were born either. Vegeta says Goku might not be a bad person but he's a horrible father.

Whis says he doesn't understand enough about Earth customs, but he should be heading off with Goku soon. Whis and Goku leave and Vegeta assures himself that he's doing the right thing.

Later on, on Beerus' planet, Goku, Beerus, Whis and the Oracle Fish enjoy the daifuku. Goku is ready for training and wants a more advanced course. Whis says slow and steady wins the race; consistency is what will make him stronger in the end. Goku doesn't want to start back to the basics.

Beerus is full and off to sleep. Goku says before he goes they should discuss the promise they made to Zeno Sama. The promise was regarding a martial arts tournament for all the universes, and Goku is excited. Beerus says they should just forget it. Goku pulls out the button that Zeno gave him and says he should ask him about it. Beerus says he's not playing and they really should leave Zeno alone. Whis also advises against it.

Goku wonders what the big deal is since Zeno seemed so nice and all he's going to do is ask him about the tournament. Beerus reminds him that Zeno has the purest heart and that pureness is what makes him so scary. Whis reminds him that Zeno has the power to wipe out the entire universe. Goku says Zeno is his friend and things will be ok. He shows the button's two sides. One side will bring Zeno over to them, while the other will take him to Zeno.

Beerus warns Goku about this but Goku already pushes the button and is warped away. Whis is surprised that Goku actually did it. Beerus says this can be very bad.

My thoughts-

So this is the start of the Universal Survival Arc where the fighters will face several teams of different universes. I really wish the manga changed how it started though. In both the anime and manga, the whole arc starts from Goku's childish and selfish desires to have the tournament, despite warnings from Beerus and Whis. Sure Goku was expecting a normal non-stakes tournament and didn't expect that the universes were fighting for their survival, but it was still incredibly reckless, especially after Goku witnessed firsthand how Zeno effortlessly wiped out Trunks' entire timeline.

The easiest solution would have been to just have Zeno (or now, both Zenos) show up at Beerus' planet and announce that the tournament would begin soon. Sure, Goku would be the only one excited while everyone else would be terrified, but at least the blame wouldn't fall on his shoulders. Originally Zeno brought up the tournament after witnessing the first one, which was all Champa's idea. I'd rather see Beerus yell at his brother than all of this be Goku's idea.

The story plays out similar to the anime with stuff like Goku facing the bandits and Vegeta wanting to stay on Earth until Bulma gives birth. We get the infamous line of Goku not knowing when his sons were born. I mean, Goten makes sense since he was born sometime after the Cell Games and Goku was dead at the time. Even though Goku chose to stay dead, nobody at the time knew Chichi was pregnant with his second born. But Gohan??? While it seems out of character with the Goku we know nowadays, back at the beginning of the Saiyan Arc, Goku was pretty much a happily retired family man. His desire to get stronger and face new opponents didn't start until later on in the series after the Saiyans arrived. Even then during the Saiyan and Freeza arcs he was only getting stronger because the fate of his friends and family was at stake. It wasn't just for fun. I bring this up because at this time, because I'm pretty sure that 'retired family man' Goku would definitely had been around when Gohan was born.

The new thing added in the manga is the fact that Vegeta can also now contain the Super Saiyan Blue aura, which makes the effects last longer than the aura just expelling energy. This in itself is based on the technique that Goku used against Zamas in the previous arc and is also exclusive to the manga. The idea is that Super Saiyan Blue is powerful but has a time limit due to the amount of energy spent maintaining that form. Containing the form within yourself makes it last longer but at the cost of it tearing you up inside if you aren't strong enough to contain it.

We also see Whis' first explanation of fighting with the body responding on its own without the need for thought. This was the basic principal behind Ultra Instinct and in the manga he told Vegeta about it first.

We'll see what happens as the story continues. It's been a while since I've seen the Dragonall Super anime, I forgot that Mai was still around after the events of the Future Trunks Arc, but I guess it makes sense. After the tournament begins, we don't really have any scenes going back to Earth showing us what the rest of the non-fighting cast are up to, so it's easy to forget.

Also I was curious what this daifuku was so I looked it up. It's apparently a small round mochi snack with a sweet filling that is usually served with green tea. It kinda looks like a small snack or side-dish to me (unless they're bigger in real life than in the photos I found), but Beerus and the rest act as if they ate a full course meal.

After consulting with Ninja Jupi, it seems mochi is rather thick, so it would be sort of filling. Probably not enough to make you want to take a nap afterwards, but still a bit filling. Also this chapter drove Jupi crazy with all of Goku's mischaraterization when you compare Super Goku to DBZ Goku.

Dragonball- It's time to go beyond Z or end it

By Mark Rodriguez So while the Dragonball Super anime has ended for a few years now, and the Dragonball Super Broly movie is over a year old as well, the Dragonball Super manga has actually continued past the Tournament of Power and  Super Broly movie. As this new arc, nicknamed the Moro Arc after its main villain is coming to a close, the question is where do they do from here? Also before you get into this article, I really hope you know your DBZ because there are just waaaaaay too many characters to take the time out to explain who everyone is one by one. Dragonball and Dragonball Z is one of the longest running anime and manga series since the 80's and while it seemed it was put to pasture after Dragonball GT ended in 1997, the only thing left was for the American dubs to catch up. Despite this the love and nostalgia for the series lived on with videogames and the occasional special here and there that would bring back the characters (like the Yo, Son Goku and his Friends Retu

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

Five Nights at Freddy's- How FNAF 2 Complicated the Lore

By Mark Rodriguez Five Nights at Freddy's.... a game series that started out by being a security guard trying to survive 5 nights at a pizzeria full of haunted animatronics that spawned lots of sequels. Now the latest one is looking like it's going to be about some of the animatronics actually trying to keep you safe from a serial killer that might have been brainwashed by a possessed VR game. What the hell? FNAF.... how it started and where it's going......  Here's a quick trip down memory lane over just how simple the story of FNAF seemed to be in the first game, and how the second game started the long path of the huge mess that we have now. Now when the first game came out back in 2014, creator Scott Cawthon had no way of knowing it would be a smash hit with lots of sequels. In fact, it was a bit of a last desperate attempt to make it in the gaming business. It's hard to believe nowadays, but had FNAF failed, Scott would have given up working on video games and
