AEW Dark Elevation Episode 97- 1/9/2023 (Women's Matches)

 By Mark Rodriguez

This episode give us two matches, and one of them sets up a potential match in the future. Let's check it out.

Match 1- "The Problem" Marina Shafir & "The Native Beast" Nyla Rose w/ Vickie Guerrero vs Amira & Danika Della Rouge

The match opens with Nyla kicking out Amira's knee to knock her down. She grabs her in a snapmare and then kicks her in the face. Nyla knocks Rouge off the apron, and then grabs Amira and slams her face-first into the top turnbuckle. Nyla knees Amira in the midsection and whips her towards the ropes, where she follows with a running body splash. She tags Marina and whips Amira towards her, where The Problem catches and slams her to the mat. Marina goes for the pin but Rouge comes in to shove her off. Rouge then pulls Amira over to her corner so she can be tagged in.

Rouge steps into the ring and Marina is still sitting in the mat, daring her to attack her. Rouge tries to kick her in the face but Marina catches her leg and gets her in an ankle lock. Rouge struggled and manages to kick her off. As Marina runs towards her, Rouge goes for an armbar but can't toss her over. Marina holds on and socks her in the face. Marina uses a judo throw to toss her to the mat and kicks her in the face.

Marina plants her knee on Rouge's spine and then gets her in an underhook hold. She forces her way over towards Nyla to tag her in. With Marina still holding onto her, Nyla makes Rouge double over with a punch to the midsection. Amira runs in to help but Marina kicks her down. Nyla picks up Rouge and slams her on top of Amira.

Nyla tags Marina in and they both grab Rouge and spike her with a Double DDT. Marina pins her and gets the win but Vickie Guerrero just walks off. Nyla and Marina walk off, not understanding why Vickie is still so mad despite them winning the match.

Match 2- ROH Women's Champion Athena vs Viva Van

The match opens with Athena cockily leaning into her opponent, giving her a free shot at her. Vivan goes for a swing that Athena ducks, and the Fallen Goddess knocks her back with a kick to the midsection. Athena runs over and smacks her in the face while Vivan is still down on the mat. Athena does a flip to show off to the crowd while poking fun towards Vivan's flip she did during her intro. As Athena turns around, Vivan socks her in the face. Athena takes the punch well and then knocks Vivan down with a punch of her own, following up with the Ground and Pound.

The ref does the count so Athena can stop her attack, and she starts getting all up in his face. Vivan is rolling along the apron and Athena runs at her with full speed, kicking her out of the ring with a sliding dropkick. Athena follows her outside and runs Vivan into the steel steps. Athena sits Vivan up against the steel steps as the ref starts to count.

Athena runs towards Vivan, hitting her with both knees up against the steel steps. Athena gets Vivan back into the ring and puts her in a crossface, making her tap. Athena wins the match, but she doesn't let go until the ref pulls her off. Athena gets up in the ref's face again.

Athena sets her RoH Women's Title down and runs over to continue to attack Vivan. Suddenly Marina Shafir shows up and steps upon the ring apron. Athena slams Vivan's face into the RoH Title and rolls her out of the ring. Marina gets into the ring and points towards the title. Athena actually backs off and leaves the ring, facing towards her next challenger.

My Thoughts-

The story with Vickie Guerrero being angry at her team continues on. While she did show up with Nyla and Marina, she angrily sent them towards the ring, still looking at them with disapproval. Even though they won, she still marched off angrily. The first match was decent. Marina brings the techniques and Nyla brings the power, but the most interesting part was what's going on with their team.

Marina surprisingly shows up to challenge Athena for the title. It makes sense too. Vickie is angry that neither of them are champs, so Marina takes the initiative and goes after Athena, the current RoH Women's Champ. This looked like it might have been a decent feud, but surprisingly the big match between Marina and Athena took place the very next night on AEW Dark. I guess since it's a Ring of Honor match, they didn't want it on Dynamite or Rampage, and the next Ring of Honor Pay Per View is too far away. I would have liked an extended feud though, especially since Marina needs more work and could benefit from it. We'll see how the match goes in the next episode of AEW Dark. As for the match itself, poor Vivan Van never stood a chance against this more violent and arrogant version of the Fallen Goddess.

Arachna# 1 Review *Spoilers*

By Mark Rodriguez Here's another awesome comic from independent artists that opened up an Indiegogo to get it started. I usually don't chip in unless it looks real good, like you just know they're gonna hit their goal. Arachna, a sexy superheroine with a split personality and an amazing art syle, sure looked like a good pick for me.  With lots of clever marketing in advance, even getting a person to dress as Arachna herself to bring the character to life, they hit their goal the same day they actually opened the Indiegogo for donations. I chipped in for the comic and the shirt, and here is my review on the latest superheroine that's bringing sexy back to comics, Arachna! Also note, while I'll try to keep my language as tame as I can, this book deals with way more adult stuff than I usually discuss on this blog. The Adventure Begins The issue opens with Jennie lying in bed naked in her apartment, a noticeable pile of sketches lying on the floor. She awakens to a voi

SNK VS Capcom Chaos Volume 1

By Mark Rodriguez We'll be seeing a few crossovers this month, and we're gonna start with one based on a crossover videogame. If you think the Malibu SF comic series was kinda sloppy, this one was literally all action, pin ups and splash pages, and what little story in it is just plain weird. I'm talking about the SNK VS Capcom Chaos comics made by Happy Comics, translated by Japan and produced with supervision from both SNK Playmore and Capcom. But first a brief explanation on the game this was inspired from. In 2000, Capcom produced Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 which would throw the fighters of Capcom and SNK at each other. Unfortunately, aside from Morrigan from Darkstalkers and Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, the game felt more like Street Fighter VS King of Fighters. Capcom later made Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millenium with even more characters and variety as well as different modes of play. SNK made their own game, SNK VS Capcom Chaos and it offered a bit more

Goshawk and Falconet # 1 (heavy spoilers so beware!)

By Mark Rodriguez Brought to you by the same studios that brought you Arachna # 1 and 2, we get a brand new superhero duo, Goshawk and Falconet. Let's check it out. The story opens with Goshawk and Falconet soaring through the sky just above Santa Monica Bay. They fly towards a ship that is being robbed. Goshawk tells her to secure the cargo while he keeps the guards busy.  The robbers are working for a villain named Black Parrot. Goshawk lands between two of them and bashes their heads together. Just then a third man pulls a gun on him from behind. Goshawk retracts his wings which knocks the gun out of the man's hand. Goshawk knocks the guy out while Falconet kicks the guy protecting the cargo. Falconet uses one of her claws to pick the padlock and finds a room full of captured women. She assures them that they're alright now. On the lower decks, Black Parrot and a woman named Secretarybird think their mission is a success. With the harbormaster being bought and paid for
